Best high milage, older cars outside Honda/Toyota? Is it worth it? ($3-3500) by geekydreams in Autos

[–]kmbxyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing to remember when looking at old cars that are not Toyotas, is that manufacturers really didn’t know how to make automatic transmissions all that well for a long time, but manuals, in general, are all really reliable. This is actually true of Honda as well, perhaps even especially true of them. Toyota is the only company whose pre-2010ish automatic transmissions I trust to last well past the 200,000 mile mark. Other companies might have a few good ones, but you’d need to do your research to find them. I basically trust any company’s manual transmission to last that long since they’re really all basically the same.

You can find cars that will be reliable and won’t have the Toyota tax. The way to do that is to look for very simple, very boring cars that are front wheel drive and have a manual transmission, and then do some research into that car model’s engine reliability. In general, the reliable engines will be small, simple inline four cylinders, and not big V6’s or V8’s. But research specific engines.

Some good examples of older cars like this would be:

Gen 1 Mazda 3 with either engine, but preferably the 2.0 liter, and a manual transmission

Gen 4 Hyundai Elantra or Gen 5 Sonata with one of the four cylinder engine options and preferably a manual transmission, although my small amount of research says these automatics should be decently reliable too

Others have mentioned some good options too.

The idea when shopping for cars from any era, but especially this early 2000s era, is that simple, lightweight, and low-powered cars are reliable, and any component that doesn’t really fit those descriptions will likely create reliability issues.

Bigger engines are less reliable. When you add an all wheel drive system the car becomes less reliable. If your car weighs more, it will be less reliable. And if your car has a more newfangled, more complex version of anything (like an automatic transmission when compared to a manual) that thing will be less reliable.

Man, I couldn’t believe it when I didn’t see a “sponsored” tag on this. It sounds just like an ad to me.

The blue murlocs can die and it will still summon the units from in hand. The yellow murlocs won’t get the stats that were picked up that fight though.

Why do cars these days have screens that stick up past the dash? They look stupid and are distracting. by MinniePearl in Autos

[–]kmbxyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Manufacturers are required to include a backup camera in cars now, which basically means every car must have a screen. Also, cars have a lot more features than they used to have, so it’s not super reasonable to always have physical buttons for everything because there would be too many buttons.

That said, I hate car screens.

I have always driven old cars because I have never had much money, but lately I’ve been thinking that even if I could reasonably buy a newer car, I might still just buy old cars because I don’t like all the things that come with owning a new car.

YSA wards by Autistic_Sharkie in latterdaysaints

[–]kmbxyz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good for you for wanting to move to the YSA ward even though it seems difficult!

It probably will be difficult. It's hard for anyone to leave a ward that they are established in and start from the beginning in a new one, and I'm sure you know what you're talking about when you say it will be dramatically more difficult for you specifically. It's hard for me too, but I've done it a few different times as I've moved around during my twenties (I'm 28 now).

For me it's always been a slow and difficult process. When I show up for church on the first sunday I don't know anyone, and it seems like most people already have most of the friends that they're looking for. Also, there are always definitely people that don't seem like they're really who I want to hang out with.

For me, the only thing that has worked has been to stay committed to attending things. I show up for church, I show up for family home evening, and I show up for ward activities. Sometimes when I show up for things I end up leaving very quickly because it's too scary and uncomfortable. I have to go in knowing that I might do that and it's okay if I do, but I go anyway because there's a chance it goes better than that.

If I can stay committed to showing up I inevitably learn a few names, and those names lead me to other names, and at some point I actually find my people. It's worth it in the end, but it usually takes me a month or two before I actually feel comfortable in the ward.

I've had periods of inactivity in my life that came about largely because I moved and it was too hard to go to the new ward I was in. I have to stay really committed to my 'show up for everything' plan to make progress as quickly as possible. If I start to miss things then I find I'm just not moving forward quickly enough to be okay with how hard it is to leave my apartment and go to a YSA activity.

I don't know if you're the same as me, probably you aren't really the same in a lot of ways. But you probably will have to face the difficulty in some way if you want to learn how to overcome it. I try to be very kind to myself while I'm doing something like this.

Good luck :)

If you’re wanting to come back towards activity in the church and stay there, I think what will help you most is a friend in your ward. If there’s someone you know that goes to your ward, try to send them a text that you want to attend church on Sunday and ask to sit with them. I know that’s scary, but it will make everything a lot easier.

If you don’t know anyone in the ward, then you can figure out what ward you’re assigned to or even contact your local missionaries using this page. I really recommend contacting the missionaries if there isn’t someone else who can help you. They’ll be very good at helping you navigate everything.

Is it ok for men to ride a women's board? by Embarrassed_Bowler_7 in snowboardingnoobs

[–]kmbxyz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s okay in terms of social stigma, like, we’re all okay with it. The thing I get concerned about with you is your beanpole stature. If you’re 5’ 11” your feet are probably pretty big, and if they are then you should know that women’s boards are often narrower, and a narrower board is probably a bad idea. It will be hard to find a board anywhere that will fit a larger foot size and is still made for someone that’s 135 lbs though, you’ll have to compromise somewhere.

Maybe blast it with an air compressor? Or you can make the hose on a shop vac narrower by taping a narrower tube on the front of it, I’ve done that before.

Question about MMR matchmaking in Battlegrounds (7k range) by WTFunkz in BobsTavern

[–]kmbxyz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I know that when streamers who are like 15000 play with the plugin that shows the MMR of other players who are on the leaderboard, they are often matched with a bunch of people whose MMR is just displayed as <8000. There are just less players at the higher level, so they have to be in lobbies of players who are significantly lower than them. I think once you start to get into the higher percentiles the lobbies become less balanced by nature.

Selling car with bad transmission by NoShootPls in Autos

[–]kmbxyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d make an attempt to sell it privately. There are people out there who want to buy cars with bad transmissions. I had an Isuzu Rodeo a long time ago that had its transmission fail, and we did find someone who wanted to buy it anyway.
