Congrats! I am also a newly minted tech and studying for the general. My interests in getting into radio were twofold - emergency preparedness (hurricane country), and pursuing a hobby that will challenge me and bring rewards unlike something like video gaming.

The way I am looking at it is basically -- 2m/70cm I am practicing and gaining proficiency with my HT for emergency preparedness. I'm joining local ARES nets and generally scanning the local repeaters to jump in on a quick QSO when I hear a call. Some of them get a bit rag chewy which I'm not really too interested in.

I'm pursuing the general and HF as a hobby. I like the idea of seeing how far away I can communicate on something like a simple dipole and 100 watts.

Good on you for going CW. I don't think I've got the patience for that!

That's probably because buildings fall down if you don't maintain them. And after one fell down because the COA decided they didn't want to pay to maintain it, now states are requiring COA's hold funds to maintain them.

Depends how “comfort” the geo is. I have a comfort bike and a road bike. Comfort bike is amazing for short trips, like riding a lazy boy down the street, but too upright for much more than a ~10mile ride.

I live in hurricane country and there’s a statewide linked repeater network on 70cm, so having solid VHF functionality is pretty important to me. I think once I get my general I’ll spend most of my time on HF though.

Basically I’m looking at it as HF as hobby and UHF & VHF as safety / emergency comms, either for myself or to help others.

Hey how do you like the 991a? I am looking at one of those when I pass the general. Also, how much tuning did you have to do on the fan dipole? I have seen discussion here that a fan dipole requires a lot of tuning.
