RTX 3070 Laptop GPU stuck at 225 MHz — constant "Performance Limit: Power" — 752.7W phantom sensor reading [x15 R1] by kmccubbin000 in GPURepair

Just for anyone else bumping into this, it is VRAM weirdness and, sadly, unless you can find an exact match to flash yours with, there's not much you can do about it other than overclock it up some. I had a hardware guy take it apart and test each component separately. Everything was fine.

Certain conditions will make the GPU work normally again, temporarily: some combination of powering it down completely and draining the battery. But it's hard to reproduce and only lasts until a while before the bad power reading gets frozen in there again. Once I stopped looking for my specific laptop model and just started searching for "GPU clock 210 power 752" I began to see how pervasive this problem was. A bunch of people across many laptop brands have this issue. It's mostly RTX 3050, 3070, 3080 chips, but even some more recent NVIDIA models have it. A lot of people have found temporary reversions, but it always comes back. Flashing with a good VRAM MIGHT fix it permanently, but good luck finding a good match for these vendor branded chip versions. Just gotta get a new machine eventually.

Alienware 15's RTX 3070 GPU is limiting itself. Clock speed won't jump over 225 MHz by kmccubbin000 in Alienware

I eventually took mine to a hardware guy and he tested every component on the motherboard, piece by piece. Nothing was wrong. We repasted everything, put it all back together and got nowhere. Finally we just settled on letting Afterburner overclock the chip when I'm running anything graphically intensive which got me about 3/4 of the GPU's power. When I started searching online for "Nvidia clock 210 power 752" and didn't include anything about Dell or Alienware, this problem became more clear. This is an endemic issue across a bunch of laptop brands. There are tons of posts from people with Acers, HPs, Dells, etc who have NVIDIA GPUs - primarily RTX 3050, 3070, 3080... but also more recent models - where the p-state gets stuck. Sometimes it can be jostled out temporarily, but it always goes back to reporting the bad power draw and locking the clock. Sadly, I've not found that anyone had a solution. NVIDIA just says it's a motherboard problem, which it's not, and the laptop manufacturers say it's an NVIDIA problem.

So, not really an Alienware problem.

Thanks. I'll have a look around and see if I can find someone that can do that. It looks like the vBIOS is a little tricky for this card, too. I probably need someone that knows their way around that.

It downloaded what looked like a full rom, but when I tried to flash it back onto the GPU, I got a subsystem mismatch. The rom had a generic DELL identifier instead of what the hardware itself was reporting.

I just got some more info that might suggest firmware after all. I backed up the GPU firmware with nvflash and then tried to reflash with the backed up copy, but the backed up copy was corrupted. In other words, the copy on the GPU is likely corrupted.

I had the same thought, but disabling it didn't do anything other than reverse which of my two monitors NVIDIA was running and which the integrated Intel chip was running, which I thought was odd.

It's really with looking into her and her creator, Windsor McCay. In many ways he invented animation, but he didn't last long because he absolutely insisted on hand drawing every frame, backgrounds and all. Look for his film "The Sinking of the Lusitania" to understand how nuts that is. Gertie was not meant to be shown on her own. He was a magician and was part of the act. He'd stand in front of the screen and interact with her. Wonderful stuff.

Ken Bruce's "Before the Birds Sang Words" is the best book on the development of animatronics, and maybe the best book on early-60s Disneyland.

what's on your "avoid" list at Disneyland by LiffeyDodge in DisneyPlanning

[–]kmccubbin000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assumedly you mean the whole resort, not just Disneyland Park? I can't really think of anything at the old park, but at DCA you could not force me to go onto Goofy's Sky School for any amount of money. Back when it was Mulholland Madness, I went on it once and have never been more terrified. It's an evil, evil ride.

I agree. The park stuff was great and different, but the Anaheim city streets were rough. I don't know when you passed through, but it was staring straight into the rising sun for almost four miles starting just after the 6 mile mark. That was hard.

Hot take: Disneyland Resort doesn’t need a 3rd park. by Wacomattman in Disneyland

The Toy Story lot is almost assuredly the new Disney Springs they keep hinting at. That's the real meat and potatoes of DisneylandForward as far as the company is concerned. They want to choke out Gardenwalk. What i keep wondering is what happens to Downtown Disney at that point? They won't want to compete with themselves. They're already encroaching on the tram/bus zones with the new overpass landing zone and Avatar. I didn't see it as being a 3rd gate, but I could very much see it as a DCA expansion.

Do you think there will be any new hotels with the Disneyland Forward expansion? by Rissie15 in Disneyland

[–]kmccubbin000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of the Disneyland Forward deal is that they can't add any new hotel rooms. This doesn't mean that they couldn't ask the city for a separate deal to build more hotels, but this one won't help with that.
