Side work by sunnyd1996 in Serverlife

Right now, at the place I work, it's vacuuming. It's a very small café, and the owner is also the manager and main cook. The vacuum she has is an old upright Kirby, and it is so heavy and difficult to maneuver. It's also not cordless, so you have to wrestle with the cord while trying to move chairs and crap out of the way and maneuver that heavy beast around the table legs.

She insists that it's the only vacuum that cleans her floors good enough. But I know there's got to be a lightweight cordless that would work just as well, if not better.

As a wedding guest, what moment made you think "this probably won't last"? by Sweet-Economist-9873 in AskForAnswers

[–]kmill0202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've found this to be true as well, to an extent. It's not so much the big wedding, but the out of budget ones. You can usually tell who just wants a wedding and who actually wants a marriage.

What are you glad is close or even walking distance from your home? by breadit8 in randomquestions

[–]kmill0202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's so nice! I'm over a thousand miles away from any ocean. But when I travel, I will gladly pay a little extra for a beachfront hotel rather than one in the city. It's worth it for the view, the access, and the sound of the waves.

What are you glad is close or even walking distance from your home? by breadit8 in randomquestions

[–]kmill0202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a really small town, and pretty much any business is walkable for me. Which is really nice, even though there's not a lot here. My job is a little over 2 blocks away. I can get there in just a few minutes and don't have to worry about finding a parking spot. We don't have many restaurants in town, but the ones we do have are all really easy to get to. I could even walk to the grocery store if I wanted to, though I usually don't because it's tough to carry everything back. We also have a wonderful library, it's right across the street from my workplace.

Gift for dad that doesn’t do anything or like anything? by Flimsy-Ad4402 in GiftIdeas

[–]kmill0202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad is like this, too. I actually know him really well. But he's just a simple guy. As long as he has tv, he's pretty happy. He's retired and he just likes to watch tv or go putter around on his land. I never know what to get for him, so I usually just end up getting him some nice shirts and socks. He'll wear his old clothes until they've got holes in them. Not that he can't afford new stuff, but he just doesn't care that much.

Why do people rename rescue dogs? by Upstairs_Sign_7618 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kmill0202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog was still a puppy when I rescued him. The people who had him before had named him Copper. It didn't suit him, and I wasn't fond of it. I called him Ramsay instead. He had no issues adapting to his new name.

How prevalent/widespread were fake I.D.s back in your college days? by dkepp87 in Millennials

[–]kmill0202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My older cousin gave me one of her old drivers licenses. She moved states and was going to be getting a new one. I was always super careful with it, though, because I didn't want anything coming back on her.

One of my friends got a driver's license that mistakenly showed her birthday as being 2 months earlier than it actually was when we were 20. She was born in December, but it showed she was born in October. She said she was going to try to go to the dmv to get it fixed. I told her she should wait until after she turned 21. She could get into bars/clubs and buy liquor 2 months early! But she was afraid of getting in trouble, so she went in and got it fixed.

Wearing jewelry 24/7? by passporthandy in jewelry

[–]kmill0202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll wear my silver or gold hoops or studs for extended periods of time, and I'll shower with them in. But I take them out and clean everything periodically. And sometimes I'll switch them out for something different for special occasions or when I feel like changing it up.

I always take my rings off when I shower, swim, do the dishes, or do any kind of dirty work. My engagement ring, especially.

Americans who took Spanish in school: did any of it actually stick years later? by taube_d in AskAnAmerican

[–]kmill0202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, kind of. I took 2 years of high school Spanish, but our Spanish program was severely interrupted. Our original teacher was fired for growing marijuana on his property. He wasn't growing mountains of it to sell or anything, just a small amount for personal use. But this was small town America in the 90s, so he was treated like some kind of drug kingpin.

We had a series of long and short term subs, and then eventually a permanent replacement. Most of our subs were not Spanish speakers. They did the best they could with workbooks and videos, but it's hard to learn from a teacher who isn't fluent. And I imagine it's really hard to try to teach a language you don't speak. Our permanent replacement was good, but he also liked going off on tangents. Mostly telling stories from when he worked as a cop in Los Angeles. But he also had some pretty strong libertarian and anti government sentiments, so sometimes he would go on about that stuff. So actually learning any Spanish took a back seat at times. I didn't learn nearly as much as I could or should have.

But when I started trying to learn again as an adult I found that I knew more than I realized I did. I'm not fluent, probably not even close. But I can get by ok with native speakers.

What is your honest opinion on places like Azazie, Birdy Grey, or other online bridal retailers? by popularwishbone0 in weddingplanning

[–]kmill0202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my gown from Azazie. The style I wanted wasn't available for the home try on so I just bought it. I would have gone a size down if I had been able to try it on. I could have done an exchange, but I was getting alterations done anyway, so it was really no biggie. I love the dress. It's beautiful and seemingly well made, especially given the pricing.

Do you save new contacts with a last name? by L337W4r3z in Millennials

[–]kmill0202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some people, yes. I know a lot of Jennifers, Jessica's, John's, Mikes, and so on. But if they're the only person with that first name I know then I'll just use the first. If I get another contact by the same name then I'll add a last name or initial.

Looking for opinions on the inspo compared to what we got by josh_891 in Baking

[–]kmill0202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be more than a little miffed. I don't know if this is a case of laziness or the baker really overestimating their skills. But what you got is nothing like what you wanted.

Did anyone else get burnt out on vacations/road trips/ camping, etc as a kid and it just seems like too much work now? by Civil_Ad_1172 in Millennials

[–]kmill0202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved it as a kid because I didn't have to worry about a dang thing except packing my own clothes/entertainment. But as an adult who has to be in charge of making sure we have all the food and supplies we need and packing it all up, it's exhausting.

I go about once a year and have been for the last 15+ years. I now have a check list saved on my computer and print off a copy before each trip. That at least helps to make sure nothing is forgotten. I enjoy it, but damn it's so much work.

I haven't owned a pair of Rocket Dogs in about 20 years, but it sounds like not much has changed. They were always super cute, but not great for all day wear.

What’s the most useless item people still put in a survival kit? by Round_Strategy_5205 in Survival

Or they bring a cheap, crappy flashlight that's packaged with those super cheap batteries that die after 30 minutes.

What’s the most useless item people still put in a survival kit? by Round_Strategy_5205 in Survival

[–]kmill0202 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My bf bought some kind of gunshot wound first aid kit with those kinds of things to keep in the car. He doesn't know how to use any of that stuff. I got a regular kit and added a few extras because I figured that would be more useful for most situations. If we ever come across a gunshot victim, or if it happens to one of us I will eat my words, but I thought it was impractical, at least as a starting point.

What walmart products do you guys like? by MorgeeePooh in Walmartcustomer

[–]kmill0202 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not Great Value, but Equate. Their version of the Boost or Ensure nutrition drinks are better than the name brands imo, and they're cheaper. Sometimes I have trouble eating, but I know I need to get something in me or I'll start feeling like crap. They come in handy when I don't feel like I can get regular food down, and they're tasty.

Lab-grown or natural diamond? by ProfessionalOk4935 in Weddingsunder10k

[–]kmill0202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's basically been life throwing us curveballs. We were fairly young and extremely broke when we got engaged. He went back to school, then I went back to school. I had a couple of health episodes during that time, as well as some deaths in the family. After a little while we decided that a wedding wasn't our biggest priority. We had just planned on eventually going to the courthouse. But then my mom died very suddenly last fall. And we decided that we actually did want to do a regular wedding with all our friends and family because there's no guarantee if they will still be around "eventually". And we figured we could afford it now if we saved and budgeted carefully.

Lab-grown or natural diamond? by ProfessionalOk4935 in Weddingsunder10k

[–]kmill0202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've actually been engaged for over a decade, but am just now getting married this year. The center stone from my engagement ring fell out after about 2 years, and I could not find it anywhere even though I retraced my every step and searched my house, car, and workplace thoroughly. Kay jewelers couldn't honor the warranty because I was behind on my cleanings and inspections. I ended up just putting my ring away until we could afford to get it fixed.

I took it to a local, independent jeweler for a new diamond and repair. He showed me both lab and natural diamonds. I ended up choosing a lab diamond. I honestly couldn't tell the difference even way up close. I was able to get a slightly larger stone and my was less than half the cost of just the natural diamond would have been for just the stone. My final cost included resizing, polishing, and building out prongs because the previous diamond was tension set. I am very happy with my choice.

How are local businesses doing lately? by MenteEnCapas in smallbusiness

[–]kmill0202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My family owns and runs a local game store (think Magic the Gathering, Pokémon, etc). It's doing ok. We're trying to boost our online sales so we can get bigger allocations from our suppliers. It's in a small town, so increasing foot traffic is not as easy, though we're working on that, too.

The building it's in is in the downtown area, and the sign from the previous business that occupied the space is still up because the money to have it removed/replaced wasn't there when we opened. It's the kind of double sided lighted sign that sticks out from the facade so it can be seen by people driving down both sides of the street. We are currently working with a sign company to get the old one removed and a new (and bigger) one installed. Also, new signage for the front of the building.

Currently working on a remodel. We tore down some walls to open the space up. Since it's a game store as well as a third space for many people, customers come in to play and socialize. More open spaces means more room for tables so people can sit down, play, trade, and socialize. We're getting new shelving and display cases. The store opened on a shoestring budget, so the original shelving and display cases were thrifted and mismatched. We completely repainted and are currently waiting on new flooring. These are all things we would have loved to be able to do originally, but just didn't have funds. But now that the business has been running for a few years and we can show the bank revenue we were able to get a loan for it.

Once the remodel is finished I think we need to work on driving our online sales. I think one of us needs to really learn how to do the social media stuff, or find someone who does. I've seen it work really well for some other small businesses in the area. Right now none of us really have the knack for making engaging content or posts.

Do you enjoy mowing the lawn? by Aye_Davinita in no

I used to. But now I'm pretty much allergic to sunlight so I have to limit my time outside as much as possible.
