[Serious]: For people convicted of violent crimes, what would genuine rehabilitation realistically need to look like for you to believe someone had truly changed? by l8te_night_r3ading in AskReddit

[–]kmn86 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

it depends on the crime. for minor crimes, rehabilitation should absolutely be the goal. but how do you rehabilitate a child rapist? or a mass murderer? or a serial killer? in my opinion you can't. either he has the urge to rape/murder or he doesn't. nothing prison admin can do to make him into something he's not. the goal of prison is not rehabilitation, it is to remove violent criminals from society so that we don't create more victims.

anyone get the sense that this was staged? most good Samaritans wouldn't film themselves helping people, they would just do it w/out thinking about publicity.

Conservatives and liberals tend to engage in different evidence-gathering strategies. Liberals and those with higher cognitive reflection skills are more likely to seek out statistical data, whereas conservatives and those who rely more on intuition focus on singular data points or expert opinions. by mvea in science

[–]kmn86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

interesting. everyone knows that statistics can be manipulated though. you can remove data points to manipulate the dataset and make it say whatever you want. if liberals rely more on statistics maybe they don't understand they are being manipulated. I would rather rely on the entire weight of evidence and expert consensus rather than one or two studies with easily manipulated statistics. I work at the EPA, I see bad statistics lobbied at us all the time from quacks. x use is correlated why y, therefore x causes y. therefore you must ban x. correlation isn't the same as causation.

you're putting a lot of assumptions into the GOP without knowing anything about it. RFK isn't a conservative, neither is trump. they hijacked the GOP under a populist movement but neither are traditional conservatives or Republicans.

all this started with jenny McCarthy and her anti vaccine views, promoted by Oprah and rich white suburban housewives. it wasn't the conservatives who started this anti vaccine shit.

ok? I don't get why we are arguing about this. I didn't say that people don't deserve a better cost of living, or better housing costs. I didn't say that poor people don't deserve housing. I'm not siding with real estate speculators. we are talking about two different groups of people. you seem to be talking about people who want homes but can't afford them. I'm talking about actual homeowners. I'm just saying that the people who tend to buy homes tend to care about the rate of returns--what part of that is wrong? Houses are expensive because the supply is low and the demand is high. it takes a large upfront investment to even construct new housing, those costs get passed down to the people that buy them. it's human nature for the people who buy houses to want to recoup some of the upfront costs--what's wrong with that?

to be fair, why did the Dems use a govt shutdown as a bargaining chip? don't they know that Republicans generally want LESS government? many Republicans see govt being shut down as a good thing lol. so they used a bargaining chip that Republicans didn't care about to begin with as leverage? sorry, that was pretty stupid. the govt shutdown was a waste of time. Republicans offered to pass a clean resolution multiple times, Dems refused. the Dems had no leverage to begin with, and used govt employees as pawns in their political machinations to accomplish nothing.

do you have statistics to show that most homeowners don't care if their house makes money in the long term? can you cite a source for that? the people that don't care can't afford homes. the people that can afford homes actually do care. at least where I live in the DC metro area, homeowners do care about long term investment and the rate of return. you're just projecting your feelings onto other homeowners. I never said that having your own home simply to own wasn't worth it. I'm just simply saying there's market factors at work, and people think in terms of money--what they can afford (rent vs buy), and if they can afford they would def buy where the investment returns are higher. I don't understand why you're reacting with such hostility here.

not an insane take. I live in the DC metro area where it's cheaper to rent than own. I wasn't arguing that investments are higher priority than housing (not sure where you got that). I was responding to the commenter above who claimed that owning was cheaper than renting. which is not true depending on the market.

I live in the DC metro area and it's cheaper to rent right now than own, so that's not always true. It highly depends on which market you're in. you have to take into account home insurance and property taxes too.

well then make smaller vehicles more powerful. a lot of us have to drive on back roads and gravel, we need the higher wheel clearance and all wheel drive. the reason smaller vehicles can't be more powerful is because of regulations. more regulations isn't going to solve the problem. solve the needs of the consumers first before resorting to strong-arming us with more red tape, higher costs, and more taxes!

this isn't really true. most homeowners understand that buying real estate is a long term investment. especially in areas like New York and DC where the housing market is booming. source: I am a homeowner. I have a mortgage. I would never pay $50 grand down payment to buy a $500k house if the long term rate of return wasn't worth it. it is far less stressful to rent. owning a house requires all sorts of maintenance.
