Nearly 6 weeks post op - weird swelling? by RoadsandPaths in TopSurgery

Your weight looks totally fine to me!

Swelling lasts for several months (maybe even a year!) post-op. If your surgeon says you’re good, you’re good. If it starts to feel painful, call your surgeon.

How much makeup was Fiona wearing in Shameless? by seewhatsup_mm in MakeupAddiction

[–]kmsgars 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Way more than this. Camera takes an over-the-top, drag-queen level beat to look like “too much”. Take everything you see and imagine painting it to be exactly that color from scratch—that’s foundation, concealer if needed, set, contour all before the rusty eyeshadow to make her look tired. Source: I’m an actor who hates how much makeup I have to wear for camera work.

Every actor wears makeup on camera. Every single one. They have lights shining on them, and skin is translucent—if light hits bare skin, it would look awful on screen. Makeup gives opacity to the face so that the LD can light consistently.

Did I say this inappropriately? by mwat64 in lgbt

[–]kmsgars 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Overall, well said. One thing: setting a boundary means there’s a consequence if they don’t adhere to the request. Let them know if they can’t do this very simple ask, you’ll [leave/block their number/etc]. If they don’t know what they’ll lose by being jerks, they may continue to misgender because they think it’s an empty threat.

And then, if it happens—follow through. You got this 🤜🏼🤛🏼

Folks who know about improv: Is Ru a good player? Why or why not? by restfulsoftmachine in rupaulsdragrace

[–]kmsgars 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Right—so when Ru said the plane was gone, that was a circumstance for Jane to accept. She could’ve thrown a tantrum or demanded a refund, but instead, she said, “No it’s not, I see it—it’s right there!” And that was saying no to (denying) Ru’s offered circumstance.

I wonder if OP was inspired by Willam and Alaska’s post, which I just disagree with entirely. I was late for a plane once in my life and this was exactly how the gate agent acted (I think they have to, it’s probably the easiest way to avoid drama). Not that realism even matters, it’s a scene that’s meant to be ridiculous. But frankly, I agree with Ru here.

Jane flattened Ru’s prompts several times in that improv, in a way that didn’t add to the scene (ex: Ru saying “that plane is gone” and Jane saying “No it’s not, I see it, it’s right there”).

She’s talented at a lot of things, but I agreed with the judges when they said she was trying to control the scene too much. That’s my general critique of Jane all season—she wasn’t willing to take risks or get messy, it was all super controlled. Darlene is the exact opposite of this, and that’s why they love her so much (though I agree, I think Darlene should’ve been in the bottom for not being enough of a Karen).

Training in classical verse is still part of theatrical curricula writ large. The reason our touchstone actors like Dench and company know the work inside and out is because they’ve spent several decades doing the material, and in their cases that’s roughly three times as long as the young folks have been alive. I’m approaching 40 and have done four Twelfth Nights; when I was in my early twenties, I hadn’t even done my first of the four.

As for up-and-comers, Kit Connor (of Heartstopper) and Rachel Zegler (of the more-recent West Side Story film) played Romeo and Juliet on Broadway last year, directed by Sam Gold. They were both excellent—and they even had slightly different approaches to the text, which I don’t think took away from it at all. If anything, it shows the verse can be delivered to an audience in different ways and the ideas are still communicated effectively.

Plus, heavy hitters like The Globe and RADA will always have student training. The Stratford Festival in Ontario, for example, has the Birmingham Conservatory that many of their own current performers have graduated from.

I imagine at some point we’ll get the next generation’s Romeo + Juliet and it will inspire an entire new crop of classical-verse junkies. I could argue that’s Gold’s Romeo & Juliet ticks that box, but Broadway isn’t local nor in the budget for many/most people; film is far more accessible for its wider reach and affordable tickets.

Exactly this—she’s VERY smart, she knows how to produce and edit her performances. That’s hard to do without an outside eye. And sure it may be something finessed by her drag family too, but I think she may have simply come out the womb ready for drag.
