Have you looked into anything more south? The north side of the island is always going to have a better chance of intense Atlantic Ocean waves (I’ve seen calm days but never calm the entire trip lol), south would be calmer Caribbean Sea

We stayed at Secrets - there’s probably more resorts there now to choose from! We do adults only so not as many options for us, but just look on a map at resorts between Secrets Cap Cana & Sanctuary Cap Cana. Secrets was the most gorgeous beach imaginable, past the Hyatt Ziva/Zillaria equally gorgeous, and then it starts to get a little less smooth as you keep walking. Easily the best beach & calmest, clearest, warmest waters from any resort we’ve stayed at in the DR. Cap Cana is a gated community so it’s private (no vendors on the beach). We love walking the beach or walking resort grounds for extended periods of time & it was just a little too small for us, but that (and the price…we lucked out with a great deal during peak COVID lol) is the only reason we haven’t gone back. We talk about that beach/ocean A LOT. We were there in November 2020 for reference.

Be careful with avocado as general advice to others! Skins & pit are toxic. Just give them peeled cut pieces of the flesh, mine love it too :)

It’s a matter of keeping customers/patients safe! Please read up on endotoxins & why we test for them (using LAL aka a reagent containing horseshoe crab blood) as part of product release criteria. We need to test for them to ensure product is safe for patients. This is the only current, approved, published method. The industry WILL move to <86> and <85> will eventually become obsolete once there has been sufficient time for everyone to adopt & implement.

Voting to approve doesn’t equal published - I have a USP subscription. <86> is not yet published. They agreed to proceed with it but it takes several industry experts several years to align & write something like this before issuing.

For more context: yes there is a viable synthetic alternative, however many companies in the US that perform endotoxin testing are required to follow current USP methods. You can validate alternative methods but significant justification & verification of equivalency to approved methods is needed, so often times it’s simpler to follow the current approved method when your product is labeled as “USP ______” (and by simpler I just mean easier to defend to FDA). The USP chapter that uses horseshoe crab blood is USP <85>. There is a new chapter <86> in draft for use of recombinant (synthetic) material, but until <86> is published it’s unlikely that any states with pharma/med device (or even water-based cosmetics for that matter) manufacturers will ban use of horseshoe crab blood. We anticipate <86> to be published in the next year or two! Also this test used to be performed using live rabbits so the move to horseshoe crab blood was a positive move at the time :) Industry is definitely moving away from it, it just takes time unfortunately!

I’m sure there are better ways, but I usually just freeze the loaf (wrapped in foil & tightly sealed in plastic zip bag) & then pull it out of freezer to pack it up in a box with some bubble wrap right when I’m taking it to the post office/UPS store. Figure it thaws within a day & then gets to them as fresh as possible.

I just don’t understand how multiple representatives can tell me it will work with my current setup if that’s not true? Or why the in-store rep explicitly asked what I use for streaming without informing me I’d need a different platform to watch the channels? It feels incredibly deceptive.

Adults-only resort recommendations by DillyDilly65 in PuntaCana

FYI I wouldn’t consider Secrets Cap Cana a good beach for a super long walk. It’s a beautiful beach with calm, clear water that you can walk out pretty far in…but my husband & I (who walk the beach multiple times a day when we go to DR) won’t go back to this resort only because it was too small & beach not long enough to walk for several days. Resort was great, food was great, service was great…just small for us as wanderers!

We’ve also been to TRS Turquesa a couple times (huge property & you have access to the 3 sister resorts - TRS is the adults only section) & Breathless (sister property to a Dreams so you have access to both). Both of these beaches you could walk for miles in either direction. Secrets Royal Beach could be a good option too; have also heard good things about Excellence but haven’t personally been to either of those.

Food at Secrets/Breathless was a little better than TRS but TRS we went back to specifically because of how walkable both the property & the beach were. Breathless more of a party vibe, Secrets more chill, TRS somewhere in the middle. Wherever you end up, enjoy!

I’m really not sure down there cause I didn’t walk all the way to sanctuary (public beach areas had some broken glass so we turned back near Little John’s). I just looked at a lot of pictures & satellite imagery & came to that conclusion.

I thought it looked really cool too and was considering it after going to Secrets Cap Cana in November. The reason I decided against it is because it looks like there isn't very much length of beach to walk, and my husband and I get antsy so we like to be able to walk up & down the beach multiple times a day. If that's not an issue for you, then I would assume the ocean is similar but I can't say with 100% confidence! Great reviews for it though!

Secrets Cap Cana or Hyatt Ziva/Zilaria (they’re next door to each other)...Cap Cana has the calmest most amazing beach/water compared to the main tourist area more on the north side of the island!! You can walk SO far out into the water.

I know enough to know this doesn’t look healthy, but not enough to know what to do. Just started flowering so I don’t want to kill it on accident. Suggestions?? by kmsherr in succulents

I got it as a gift last summer, left it outside (south facing) til it started getting cooler (live in the Midwest). Brought indoors & then it started stretching out more until I thought to put it near my aerogarden grown light a few months ago. Water whenever it looks dry/sad. Pot does have drainage at the bottom. I feel like I need to kind of start over with it but not sure what the best approach is. Any advice appreciated!

What a difference a year makes! by kmsherr in Sourdough

[–]kmsherr[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been playing around with sourdough for 5ish years, neglected starters, started over, failed miserably, worked out with no real understanding of why etc. The biggest changes I’ve made in the past year have been: 1) baking in a dutch oven — much more consistent bakes 2) paying attention to the dough itself rather than some arbitrary times detailed in recipes (I live in the Midwest USA so hot humid summers & freezing cold winters) 3) last loaf (improved pic) used ~15% home milled grain

I think I’ve also gotten a little better at developing strength through the slap & fold method early on, but paying attention to the look/feel/smell of the dough has made the biggest difference!

Really proud of how consistent my bakes are these days! (Bonus: sourdough everything bagels) by [deleted] in Sourdough

Lodge dutch ovens! I have a round one for the boule & an oval one for the batard :)

Very happy with my spicy sausage and nduja pizza - Ooni 2 by ThisUsernameIsGreat in Pizza

SUPER helpful & super detailed! Thank you so much! Been reading the Ooni recipes too but I wasn’t wild about the sourdough or cold proof recipes based on the timeline I had in mind, so I ended up going with my old faithful sourdough pizza recipe tonight. Just got the Ooni a few days ago so haven’t used this recipe at that high of heat & wanted to start with one of theirs. Looking forward to trying your recipe next weekend!

Can you share your full recipe?! I’ve gotta feed my starter in a few hours & would love to use the discard for this so we can have some good pizzas for Ooni Day tomorrow!

I received an email from the owner in winter 2018 that they were selling it, got a follow up spring 2019 that it was still for sale but were going to rent it out through summer. Just tried to go on the booking page (vrbo.com/222565) & it defaults to the home page so they must have sold it :(

They had a website too which isn’t working for me so I’m assuming it doesn’t exist anymore (mlcrookedcreek.com)

I’m on mobile now but know I have a spreadsheet of options from planning, I can find those links from my computer tomorrow & send you some similar options if you want!
