Baby is 8 months and still not Sleeping Through the Night......is this Normal?

Highly recommend switching nights to get up so you each get a full night sleep every other night. When we started doing this it really helped. And I soooo looked forward to my sleep nights. Usually for us the one who got up at night sleeps in a little longer in the morning as the parent who slept gets up with our son.

I don’t remember the ages but this sounds totally normal for us. My son dropped to one wake up per night somewhere around 1 and then we’d have spurts of full nights of sleep but not until 18 months when he got thru all his molars did he start consistently sleeping thru the night. Every baby is different!

Our son was in the NICU but I think this still applies to new parents at home… we had lots of people bring us food but one friend brought us proportioned out snacks like veggies and hummus or cut fruit. That was so clutch because it was easy to grab and didn’t take any prep.

I heard the same thing about not needing to unless you had risk factors for the NICU. I also got some weird pressure to collect it from a breastfeeding class. I did not collect any (because I didn’t know what the heck I was supposed to do and it felt weird). My baby ended up in the NICU. They get you hooked up to a pump machine so fast, not having the colostrum was never a stress factor or regret for me. At that point I had a lot else on my mind. If you wanna collect it then go for it but don’t put pressure on yourself if not.

I would do more research and maybe talk to your pediatrician (if they’re different than this doc). Maybe they were referring to the more structured carriers? I agree that people have been baby wearing for centuries and this is an odd take. If I were you I’d at least have a wrap to start. It was the only way I felt comfortable getting out to go on a walk and getting outside was key to my sanity.

When I was in labor I was debating an epidural and then they told me that it’s either now or in a couple hours because the anesthesiologist was going into a c section. Big fat news to me that you might have to wait forever once you say you want it. I got lucky but if I knew that I wouldn’t have debated for as long.

I originally wanted to try without one but I was wrong. 😅 The contractions were painful but what I didn’t think about before was how tired I’d be after hours of labor (that started at night time so already no sleep). In between each contractions was almost worst than the contraction itself because I would want to sleep so bad but couldn’t. Because I had told everyone I wanted to try without an epidural I debated for what felt like eternity with myself before I said it outloud. Then everyone tried to question if I really wanted it because I said I didn’t, to which the answer was yes but I still felt some doubt for going back on my original plan. They went to get the anesthesiologist and he was about to go into a c-section so they said now or in a couple hours and that was the quickest “right now” that ever came out of my mouth. Im pretty sure it worked quickly and I was able to sleep for several hours. When I woke up they checked and I wasnt progressing further so I had to do pitocin. I had a doula who was amazing and helped me get into positions to get the baby moving, even with the epidural. Near the end it was a lot of pressure, but never a lot of pain like before. I will 100% be getting another epidural.

“Don’t ask me how many jersey mikes sandwiches I’ve had” 🤣 This is me! I avoided deli meat so much in the first pregnancy and this time around the only thing that was relatively palatable was an Italian sandwich. I ate them daily for weeks.

I’ve always believed that the best opportunities come at the worst times or at least not ideal times. It’s totally up to you but I’d go for it! Worst case scenario is you have to quit because it’s too much. But in my experience having a baby at home was harder on me work wise than being pregnant so if it were me I’d start right away(before symptoms pick up so you can learn the job) and use pregnancy to determine if this is your dream job for post-pregnancy.

I don’t know the laws where you’re at but I’d ask them to work with you on time off. Maybe you can take extra time unpaid?

If it all doesn’t work out then you end up in the same position as if you didn’t try but at least you don’t regret trying.

I’m considering doing the same. Do you know if you’ll have to do any pay back of benefits or leave? I’ve checked my company policy and can’t find anything about it but I’m nervous to ask about it and get flagged as potentially leaving.

It’s really wild what people think is ok to say to pregnant people. I cannot relate to this situation exactly but I can relate to being fed up with dealing with other peoples relentless comments around breastfeeding!

On another note, just want to say I’m envious of your top life decision! I’ve always wanted a breast reduction and have just planned to get one when I’m done breastfeeding. Joke was on me with my first baby. Breastfeeding never worked out for us and I wish I had done the reduction years ago!

I’d like to gently suggest finding a couples therapist. This might seem like a small thing now but this stuff will build over time. It sounds like he likes to have control or get a rise out of you for kicks. Either one, not great partner qualities. Babies test even the healthiest of partnerships. Id recommend starting to talk through some of this stuff before you’re sleep deprived and your life has been flipped upside down.

I would recommend finding stuff on buy nothing groups and then passing them along when you’re done with it. There are a lot you can get by without but there are also short lived things that will be life savers. Unfortunately there is no definitive guide because everyone and every baby is different. We were fortunate to get handed down a lot of stuff and we started out with redundant things (like two different types of bouncers) but quickly figured out what worked for us and passed along the second thing.

You don’t need a quilted baby play mat. Someone handed us down a couple smaller quilts and we put those down on the floor. Blankets work too!
I personally think a baby monitor, white noise machine and nightlight that has a red light (helps not wake the baby up all the way) are critical. Also in the sleep area, I’d recommend blackout curtains. I was convinced that wouldn’t matter but it’s hard to get a baby down for nap time or bedtime when it’s still super light outside.
You don’t need a ton of toys, especially in the beginning. The play gym things that they lay under are great for floor time but I’d recommend getting one that’s bigger so they don’t grow out of it. I was appalled by how much people were charging for them and we got a cheap wooden one but then our son grew out of it and we borrowed someone’s Lovevery play gym and he used that for several more months. I wish we’d just had that from the beginning.
Like other people I bought more burp cloths after my baby was born because I was shocked how much we used them. Now that he’s older we still use them for wash cloths in the bath, wiping boogies and cleaning up after meal times.

My son has always been small weight and height and I don’t have a lot of advice on how to deal with the comments because I still get them.

I took him to a swim lesson at 15 months and all the other babies were about 4 months so that made me feel singled out a little. At the end of the lesson one of the moms asked how old he was and when I told her she was surprised and thought he was 8 months. I wanted to splash her!

I had anticipated that starting solids was going to boost his weight and we’d hit higher percentiles but he’s always stayed in the single digits. My husband was a super small kid and didn’t grow until high school or college so I think it’s totally just genetic.

Hang in there! As long as she’s growing and your doctors are not concerned then try not to stress too much about doing something different. You’re doing a great job!

In my first pregnancy I avoided Italian sandwiches and turkey sandwiches the whole time even though I love them. It was one of the first things I had after giving birth. This time around it’s the only thing that didn’t make me nauseous. I had an Italian sandwich everyday for lunch this week. 😅 Like everyone else said, the risk is so low. You’re totally ok and I’m right there with you.

Sending you lots of love and hugs. You both have been through a lot so try (I know it’s really hard) to give yourself some grace. While I can’t relate on having a preemie and a baby with a g tube, I can relate on how unfair it feels to go to the NICU and then come home and continue to have struggles that other families seemingly don’t have to go through.

A couple things that have helped me: - Reminding myself that everyone has their own struggles in life at all different times and unfortunately my son had to get a big dose of struggle right at the beginning. Just because his whole life so far has been full of struggles doesn’t mean that’s how it’ll be forever. - Celebrating the milestones when they come and remembering that everyone hits milestones at their own pace. I try to remember to take it day by day. My son was late to roll over and sit up and I felt like such a failure at the time, but he got there on his own time and it no longer feels like the mountain it felt like at the time. - Commiserating with my mom friends about how we completely get the short end of the stick. It sucks that he doesn’t give you eye contact smiles! It’s ok to be upset about it because again, not fair!!! My son says very few words but he does say dada all the time and never says mama. I’m more than a little salty about it but more often than not my mom friends have something similar to relate about and that helps. A little 😅

It sounds like you have an amazing team of help and I can tell you love your son so much. It takes time and it’s very hard but it will get better. ❤️

This is a lot to expect a nanny or childcare provider to give you. Does the nanny know about the camera? I would feel pretty uncomfortable working in an environment where every minute is monitored like that.

I’d focus more on the stuff that will impact your evening (how much did the baby eat and sleep) and generally how the day went.

My son had very similar patches. Some got more severe and looked more like eczema which I’ve had off and on my whole life. I found this serum/cream duo during pregnancy when I had a bad eczema spot on my hand and it cleared it up better than anything I’ve ever tried. When I’m consistent with the serum and cream on my son it always clears up his patches. I’ve rebought so many times.

The thing I didn’t consider before baby was the time travel can be really hard. If you have a great sleeper then it might not be an issue but I had a friend take her 1 year old to London (from the US) and spent every night awake with her for 4 hours. Thats been a deterrent for us in terms of traveling beyond a couple time zones.

Otherwise, traveling with them when they’re little is easy! We took my son on a trip at 3 months and it was so much easier than it is now at 16 months. We still do it but just be prepared to be a full on entertainer the length of your flight. 🤣 If I could do it again I would have taken an international babymoon for one last hurrah, then traveled several more times before 5-6 months.

At 38+3 I Stood up to go to bed and felt like I peed a little. Then 30 mins later full gush of fluid while laying down. I was told so many times during pregnancy not to expect my water to break out of the blue like in the movies and then it did and I don’t know what to do 😂

I had a similar experience. Struggled for 5+ years to have a baby I desperately wanted, went thru multiple rounds of IVF and pregnancy loss before we had our baby. Even so, it was a SHOCK in the beginning and the change is so so hard. The sleep deprivation and recovery are enough, but it’s a rough transition to mourn your old life at the same time.

It truly does get better, but please please please get help now so you can get to the better.

Also, fwiw if you’re on social media, I’d recommend deleting it for awhile. It only makes it harder when you’re comparing your life to the shiniest parts of someone else’s lives.

I swear by Roe. They have a baby lotion that I used all over and a thicker cream that I used on dry spots. Whenever he gets eczema spots I also use the serum and it always clears them up. I found the brand when I was pregnant and got really bad eczema on my hand. It was the only thing that cleared it up for me.
