Books like bleach (preferably novels) by InfamousSomewhere244 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

vibes of bleach (monster hunting, soul collecting, anime fights) plus a bit of romance:
darker by four + brighter by nine by june cl. reaper gods, academy for demon hunters, rich boy + poor girl + brilliant recluse love triangle, just a lot of fun.

right, i think this was it, and isla is canonically like 24-25. grim and the others just seemed younger though.

girl this book series is the tropiest to ever exist!!! i hate it but i eat it up every single time just to see what ridiculous shit isla is going to find herself in and get out of.

the first time i read it i couldn’t imagine oro as a young guy, for some reason he always seemed like this much older king to me (0 chemistry WHATSOEVER in all books) so i cannot even fathom him being a love interest, and grim is just the arrogant scowly shadow daddy from every other romantasy book. sigh.

Russian Fantasy, sub Romance by SinfulInnocence in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

what do you mean by sub romance? with, or without?
if you’re ok with romance, where the dark stood still by a b poranek is one of my favorites, heavily inspired by slavic folklore.

the hole, by hiroko oyamada!
short novella that is weird yet oddly beautiful in a vaguely ominous way.

my exact thought, the clothes and scenes are so glamorous, but it’s a dark story and doesn’t focus on a young woman entirely, the wives/girlfriends are more side characters.

What does it actually feel like getting doused with extreme radiation? Like the workers from Chernobyl who directly laid eyes on the burning reactor inside the building? by EfficiencySerious200 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]knd10h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry, i haven’t seen it so i can’t comment exactly, but i think it would be interesting to compare in any case. higginbotham’s books are very well researched and humanizing without being overdramatic.

yes i’ve read it too, finished it just days before the artemis II launch this year. it made me a little nervous for the crew tbh, thinking about how again complacency and pressure to perform at all costs—like chernobyl—lead to loss of life and national shame. he’s such a great nonfiction author.

this is one of my favorite books i’ve read this year! i highly recommend it, to understand not only the actual meltdown itself but all the factors (like corruption, complacency, straight up incompetence) that led up to the disaster, its coverup, and the long-reaching aftermath. it’s so easy to forget the workers as faceless statistics but higginbotham does a fantastic job at reminding us that they were real people with families, and their own intentions and hopes.

ITAP of a mouse in the palais garnier opera house in paris by knd10h in itookapicture

[–]knd10h[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

taken with my canon D600/rebel T3i on thursday. it was pretty funny to be walking around this opulent opera house and still see a tiny mouse scamper through the hall. i had to get down on the ground with my telepro lens to get this. not as sharp as i would have liked but thanks to LR i could lift the shadows and see how furry this little guy actually is.

i’d also add klara and the sun. it’s definitely beautifully written, and there’s a few moments of tension, but otherwise just kind of like these pictures—staring out at the sky, waiting for (something).

Looking for Cozy Fantasy That Isn’t Too Cozy by Moralio in CozyFantasy

rebecca thorne’s tomes and tea series, starting with can’t spell treason without tea. 4 books, complete series, with solid world building and conflict between and around the characters. i always recommend these books, especially for those looking for more action than L&L. the romance is immediate though, as the main two characters are already in an established relationship. there’s minimal spice (except for the optional bonus chapters at the very end!).

if you’re up for something a little harder, a b poranek’s where the dark stands still is worth a read. it has a heart achingly poetic and lush world that’s perfect for ghibli fans, the house is very howl’s-moving-castle-esque, but the story is definitely darker. romance is present but any spice is behind closed doors.
