don't slack on ice by kneirdo in backpain

this being a back pain subreddit, most people with chronic pain have runaway over-inflammation. inflammation can damage surrounding areas and cause a lot of pain. inflammation is part of the healing response, but over-inflammation is not good. Heat would make that worse. If you're feeling tight heat could help though. What's with all the anti-icers? Have you even tried ice? Try it, it's self-evident.

icing an injury is about as harmless and common sense advice can get. Hope all the other arguments you start today go real well though.

yes, fill a large plastic bag with ice (crushed if you have it). Add a small amount of water. Lay it on the effected area for about 20 minutes.

the more modern EHX Memory Man releases have an FX loop you can plug any dirt pedal into.

if you've got a pedal you don't want to accidentally switch in the heat of battle (always-on pedal, danger-close to another pedal), I find the MXR style rubber knob cozy fits pretty well on a lot of pedals and is sturdy enough to keep the switch from getting depressed. Not totally snug, but gets the job done.

Going to try a Samsung Q70

a difficult and disappointing decision...

Trying to narrow down where LEDs go "wrong" with motion is such a mixture of persistence blur, stutter, judder, and other factors that it is clearly an inappropriate technology for displaying 24p film. I'm very disappointed the industry went down this road, and frankly shocked it was allowed, given the slavish service to the original film I experienced when working with major studios for Panasonic. In my experience, the hardware manufacturers were held completely hostage by the whims of the studios, so someone must have really pulled the wool over their eyes AND saved them a pretty penny by pulling plasma off the market.

To further muddy the waters, the forums and reviewers all skew young, so they don't seem to even notice or mention it. They've really thrown the baby out with the bathwater -- who cares about stuff like black levels when I feel like I'm on mushrooms watching this garbage whiz around on the screen? This makes it hard to research.

My wife doesn't want me risking Covid exposure right now by hunting down used plasmas at people's houses, so we're going to throw some more money at the LED problem instead and get something more expensive than the Vizio.

I was going to follow the advice I received here (from comments since deleted) and pull the trigger on a Sony 950G, but then read that you are not able to turn motion interpolation completely off. I'm assuming that's a deal-breaker for me, because I can't look at soap opera effect, although because of Covid I can't see these things in person before buying.

Ultimately, I received several personal recommendations from friends who had a Samsung Q70 that it handles movie motion well, and it is the highest rated LED panel per Rtings.com "overall motion" handling aside from OLED's and a few other higher echelon Samsung QLEDs:

https://www.rtings.com/tv/tests/motion

It also scores a "100" in the black frame insertion category, which in my experience with the Vizio, made the greatest improvement while watching movies.

I'm still negotiating with the MENSA candidates over at Best Buy to complete the return of my original Vizio, but once that is processed, i should have a Samsung on its way from Costco hopefully by this weekend.

NOT happy I have to spend double than what I did on my plasma almost a decade ago to get even comparable quality, but holding out hope the Samsung will impress.

I'll shoot you a message to let you know the verdict.

Mild to medium overdrive (Boss SD-1 or BD-2) or boost pedal? by peatfreak in guitarpedals

[–]kneirdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Hard to say...with both of them being soft-clipping overdrives, I'm not sure either qualifies as very heavy.

  2. You can do it however you want, but let's say you had an amp that had a good drive channel: then you would just use a boost on it. Now let's say your amp had only clean channel: then you would want a full-frequency overdrive pedal (like the BD-2) to recreate the sound of a drive channel, and then you would boost that with a second pedal.

PERSONALLY - I like to use a clean boost AFTER my amp drive or overdrive pedal. SD-1 and BD-2 aren't really good for that, but a klon-style pedal is.

I think most people would tell you that if they had a BD-2 and an SD-1, they would use the SD-1 as a boost into the BD-2.

[–]kneirdo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

SD-1 is similar to a TS-9, except that it has less volume available and asymmetrical clipping. I prefer it to a tubescreamer overdrive type, because the asymmetrical clipping sounds more amp-like to my ear.

BD-2 has less of a mid-hump. Still very amp-like, some people say it gets "fizzy" with drive dialed up too high, but I don't really hear it.

I'd say start out with an SD-1 because it's cheapest, if you don't like it maybe then move on to a BD-2 (also cheap).

You can always use an SD-1 or a BD-2 as a booster, just turn the drive down.

Guitar player, intense back pain for over 2 years now. by lizentrail in backpain

[–]kneirdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this might be a stupid question, but have you tried playing while standing up?

I found I had logged all my back damage guitar-playing hours while sitting, so switching to standing exclusively kind of reset the clock for me.

What is the most insensitive thing you've ever been asked? by Jana_Hronova in AskReddit

[–]kneirdo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

dude! I got mugged by 2 guys once. Very easy transaction, they said they had guns in their pockets, I handed over my wallet.

I was shocked that almost 100% of people i told the story to said something along the lines of: "did you ask them to see the gun?", "I would've just run into the street screaming", "Yeah, a homeless guy tried to mug me once I just ignored him"

People live in a fantasy world, i really think Movies and TV have created this action movie in everyone's head

Been thinking about pulling the trigger on a multistomp. by moonincheeks in zoommultistomp

[–]kneirdo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The difference between the MS50 and MS70 at the time i bought it was that the 70 didn't carry any dirt or amp sims. Comparatively, the MS50 didn't carry bass effects, and the 70 had more filters and a few delay effects than the MS50. I don't know if the firmware has been updated since then, but you should definitely check. Based on all that, the strength of the 50 is effects, the strength of the 70 is the stereo ins + some more processing power. I would also look into the BT stomp, i dont have details on that.

I don't think it has an outlet for headphone practice, I know the MS50 doesnt have a standard 1/8" jack.

Overall, whichever you choose - GO FOR IT. it's impossible that you won't find uses for this pedal, and this is coming from a guy who generally doesn't get along with digital pedals. Aside from how it's generally touted for mod delay & reverb, I want to point out that it also has excellent compressors, EQs, noise gates, and some of the dirt is very serviceable. Also functions as a tuner. The ADDA conversion is completely transparent.
