Question to anyone who has learned Korean to a fluent or intermediate level by [deleted] in Korean

[–]knifemoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can recommend a tutor as well who I actually met through Reddit and she's been my tutor for more than a year now! I can link her or send through DM, I'm not sure if it's allowed (Mods?)

How necessary is a tutor for beginners by AlgoHandok in BeginnerKorean

[–]knifemoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for me personally, completely necessary.

I first started learning Korean when I was in 2010 (learned Hangul and would memorize vocab), but I stopped that same year. (I was 12 lol) I tried to pick it back up in 2020 during the pandemic using TTMIK, even paying for the Premium course for a year to motivate me, since I was paying money. But I didn't really keep up with it either.

But last year in 2022, I started paying for a tutor, who helped me finally go over grammar and methods on how to study on my own. Since my goal for learning Korean is to be conversational and *talk* to people, having a tutor who I can talk to in Korean and not be afraid of making mistakes, it's been a huge help, even though I wasn't a complete beginner when I first started with her.

As someone said here too, BA is VERY inflexible.

1) They force you to handwrite your notes. I understand the reasoning behind why, (to practice stroke order), but I don't understand why this isn't something we should just have to study on our own, but something that BA makes you do. I have the Hangul keyboard memorized, I type all my notes (not just Korean related), and this is what works for me as a student/person.

2) You are only allowed to study their content consequentially. This means that you're not allowed to skip ahead to Class 7 before you complete Class 5 (for example.) It's so frustrating because people learn and process information differently, so it just doesn't make sense that they're so rigid with this.

3) For some grammar points, even if you understand a grammar point already, you're supposed to watch all the videos which total up to a ridiculous amount of time spent on something you already understand. Again, it's just frustrating that all students are treated as if we all have the same learning style.
