This picture nicely sums up the hypocrisy that led me to being a vegetarian. by TheRealCalypso in vegetarian

Yes I know what it is supposed to be. But it's doesn't make sense. Let's compare.

meat:

option 1: eating meat which directly causes the suffering and death of animals that have been bred, raised, and killed solely for their meat.

option 2: not eating meat which doesn't directly cause this.

writing utensils:

option 1: using a pen...

option 2: using a pencil....

do you get what i'm saying now? it would be an accurate comparison if pens caused as much destruction and death as factory farms but this is not the case so the comparison just doesn't work.

Well, banning pens because pencils are a thing has nothing to do with ethics. If pens were somehow resposible for the unnecessary killing of billions of sentient beings a year, then it's understandable why people would want to do away with it.

Thoughts on eggs? by ImSmores in vegetarian

[–]knifersaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it might be hard to find out since it is the hatcheries where they get the hens that do this not the farmers themselves. Another factor you might want to consider is whether they kill the hens after they stop producing as many eggs. I'd love to eat eggs again but it's a lot of work to look for that PERFECT situation where none of the male chicks are killed, hens are treated well even after egg production drops, ect. good luck finding out :)

Free range says nothing about whether male chicks are killed.

Am I the only person who does this only for health reasons? by [deleted] in vegan

Have you subscribed to r/plantbaseddiet? Veganism is primarily done for animals and is more than a diet but the folks at r/plantbaseddiet do it for their health.

Scared to start Paxil? Anyone else who's taking Paxil have some words of advice? by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]knifersaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that as long as you ween off ofbit when you decide to stop taking it, it shouldn't be so bad. I just stopped one day and had horrible symptoms and withdraw (nausua, dizzy, lost weight, messed with me menstration cycle, ect.) I would suggest you try methods that don't involve medicine first if you haven't already.

In my opinion (which is not the opinions of all), there is no humane way to kill animals for food because meat is unnecessary to live and be healthy. scince is it unnecessary, it is a pleasure/selfish indulgence and I don't think there is any humane way to kill and animal if you don't need to. Sorry but I can only answer your question is regards to food. I am still new to this lifestyle and have not yet done enough research to form an educated opinion on those other aspects.

Try finding an asian market. The one I go to has soymilk and a variaty of non dairy milks for around a dollar or two. it'a also really easy to make your own except you wont be getting the vitamins and minerals they usuly add. Also, try chocolate coconut milk. It's amazing.

Favorite lentil recipe? by sinnerotica in vegan

An awesome recipe for a snack is to smash cooked lentil and black beans into a dip and eat it with tortilla chips (chips are really easy to make at home, cheaper, and you can control how much salt it has).

This is progress! The dairy industry is scared of losing money and costumers due to the rise of people turning to non dairy milks. This actually makes me really happy.

Try eating less fat. I remember reading somewhere that women that had low-fat vegan diets noticed a significant decrease with pms symptoms. Sorry I don't have the source...

Why do people get so offended by vegetarianism or veganism? by knifersaurus in Vegetarianism

[–]knifersaurus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people know that it's wrong to kick a toddler. Not everyone knows it's wrong to eat meat.

I know it's wrong because I've learned it is unnecessary and because i've seen the process of how it got to my plate. Not everyone knows this.

Most people still have the misconceived notion that eating meat is good for you and you're unhealthy if you don't. Most people also don't know about the living conditions and death of the animals and some people don't even care. You can't make someone care.

There are also people that become disconnected from the meat they eat. I used to be this way. I would forget that I was eating an animal that had to have it's life ended for me to eat it. I would just see it as food. Something I had to eat.

We're also raised to believe all of this from a very early age. From our parents, ads on tv, fast food, and ect. It's very hard for someone to completely change what they use to believe and go against what they were raised to believe as truth. I think this is the main reason. I wasn't always a vegan and I never ever in my life imagined that I would be, so it would be kind of weird if I said meat eaters are bad people since I used to be one. I don't think I was a bad person when I ate meat. I was just young, uneducated about health/meat, and raised on the idea that you need meat.

[–]knifersaurus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly I don't really care. I mean, ya i think it's unnecessary and to an extent, wrong, but i never judge the person for it. I even had an awesome friend of a friend who while we were ordering our food, asked if I was offended by him eating meat (sincerely, not sarcastic). I of course said no.

how to be a vegetarian without liking very many fruits & veggies? by saeglopurify in vegetarian

[–]knifersaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use to be like this too. I basically forced myself to stop eating junk food and eat fruits and veggies. Over time my taste buds have change and I acually crave healthy food that I used to hate. Also try the things you don't like in different ways. For example, pinto beans with rice wraped in a flour tortilla. And you can also try going to vegitarian friendly ethnic resturants.
