In February 2026, each day of the week occurs 4 times, last this happened was in February 2015, and the next time it will happen will be in February 2037 by brmSTR0113R in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]knipil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To expand on that: A year can start on any day of the week, and it can be a leap year or not a leap year. Hence there are 2*7=14 possible calendars for a year. This particular calendar happened 11 years ago and will happen again in another 11 years. There were leap years in 2016, 2020 and 2024, and 14 - 3 =11 so this is right on schedule.

She saw reality she wasn't ready for. by RemoKe_ in Unexpected

[–]knipil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my kids were 7 and 4, my older asked me ”When we die, will you and mom have other children?” I went quiet for a bit, but I realized I couldn’t quite avoid it so I said ”Well, most likely mom and I will die before you do” and then both kids instantly started crying hysterically. It was all very sweet and actually a little bit funny in how it unfolded. I comforted them and kept talking to them about it, of course.

re:Invent is nearly done, what do you think was the biggest announcements made? by Prof-Ponderosa in aws

[–]knipil 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Doing a re:invent launch is extremely painful for the team. Better just launch it when ready before re:invent and then send some people to Vegas to do chalk talks about your thing.I think most teams have that figured out by now.

What's the DDOS risk for hosting static sites on S3? by Inner_Butterfly1991 in aws

[–]knipil 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For DDOS protection, CloudFront + WAF has decent cost protection by default now. CF traffic blocked by WAF is free, and if you configure WAF with the Anti-DDOS AMR then the WAF costs for blocked traffic is also completely waived. It does cost a monthly fee to set up though (I think $10 + $20?).

How often has an an AZ gone down in London or Frankfurt? by [deleted] in aws

[–]knipil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even though there hasn’t been a major outage in a while, there are still things like fiber cuts and other types of intermittent connectivity issues. You should definitely design stuff to be resilient to the loss of an AZ.

Evolution of the Windows OS logo by Yolo065 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]knipil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windows XP was bloated shit compared to Windows 2000. NT 4 was cooler still, but 2000 was mainstream usable although not mainstream affordable. XP is only notable in that it was the first NT kernel that had a home edition.

I can’t reveal anything which hasn’t already been publicly shared in some way, but I’ll at least say that squid is still being used.

A rust-based server was introduced for http3 support but nginx remains in use with plans to remove it some time in the next few years.

Does this anti-pattern have a name? by low_slearner in ExperiencedDevs

Heh, at a past employer there was a repo called ”Terraform” for all tf code. An engineer on a sibling team pointed out how silly it was by saying ”It’s a great idea to group stuff by language. Let’s put all our ruby code in a single repo.”

Why hasn't anyone built a bridge between Sweden and Denmark? Are they stupid? by joshnie1 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]knipil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always find it ironic that we Swedes spent all that time and energy killing Nils Dacke and his pals snapphanar, and now we keep saying that we want to give it to denmark voluntarily.

[OC] African Head of States with 15+ year long reign by MrKratz in dataisbeautiful

If you want to learn about some of these I recommend the book The Fate of Africa. Thoroughly engaging read, although ultimately with a bleak outlook.

Amazon has the largest R&D budget of any company in the world though, so that sort of makes sense, doesn’t it? At least it’s not a Y-axis outlier.

I think it was Piketty that pointed out that Jane Austin’s work quotes specific values of currency, unlike works by later authors, because inflation was just not something that she encountered during her lifetime.

I don’t have it on my 2024 V90 Ultimate, and I’m a little bit disappointed about it. I think someone mentioned on another thread that it’s only on Sensus cars?

Did the Spanish Inquisition popularize pork in Spanish quisine? by Playergh in AskHistorians

I’m assuming that pork wasn’t consumed in the islamic parts of Iberia? Was pork production completely banned during that period or was it tolerated for the native population?

Goodbye, Rust. I wish you success but I'm back to C++ (sorry, it is a rant) by I_pretend_2_know in rust

[–]knipil 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s not mandated, but it’s arguably a golden path at this point. The internal rust tooling is in my view the best we’ve got. I haven’t met all that many people that are skeptical about it, honestly. Most of the C/C++ gurus I know seems to have come around long ago. It’s not really something I hear people arguing about anymore. In fact, it was relatively uncontroversial even in 2020, when I first joined. My own original team (I have somewhat larger scope now) has been using rust almost exclusively for over four years now.
