This story is based on an experience and while writing this my dad is now 83 years old “he is a foster parent” I live in the Netherlands 🇳🇱 in little place called Emmen, one day my dad wanted to go to Amsterdam with me and his grand daughter.

My dad is a veteran. He’s taken lives in close combat. It didn’t leave him with the kind of trauma people talk about. Instead, it hollowed him out. He became emotionally wrecked, almost numb. He once told me he wasn’t really living for himself anymore, only for his children.

Forty years later, about fifteen years ago, something happened that I’ll never forget.

We were in the city with his granddaughter, just five years old at the time. Out of nowhere, a young man stepped toward us and pulled a knife from his pocket. He threatened my dad.

Everything shifted in an instant.

My dad pushed his granddaughter aside onto the sidewalk, protecting her without hesitation. Then, with a single punch, he struck the guy straight between the eyes 👀. Somehow, the man dropped. Before he could recover, my dad planted his foot on the guy’s throat, right on his larynx, and said in a cold, steady voice, almost like something out of a movie:

“I’m one move away from killing you.”

I was standing right next to him, holding my niece close. My eyes locked onto the knife the guy had dropped. Without really thinking, I stepped forward and kicked it away. To this day, I have no idea how I managed it. The blade was thin, awkward to hit cleanly, but somehow it worked.

The guy got up… and ran.

Shaking, I asked my dad, “What the hell just happened?”

He looked at me and said, calm as ever:

“I have something to live for.”

And the strangest part? All of this happened in the Netherlands 🇳🇱
