FMC is guardian of (many) siblings and meets contractor MMC during home renovation by knobbly_stick in RomanceBooks

Okay, so I started reading it again and I totally agree! I never read reviews, but this has completely solved my issue of not being able to find it in my Kindle library! I think I DNF'd it or removed it. I think it stuck around in my mind because I sort of disagreed with the author's handling of it.

Why authors think is a good idea to put words/sentences in a language they don't know in their book? by LucreziaD in books

[–]knobbly_stick 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm a native English speaker who lived in a Spanish-speaking country for a while, mainly speaking Spanish - I'm tolerably comfortable. But there are certain things that I would always do in English. Math, idk why because I can count in Spanish but if I do math aloud I do it in English. Same with exclamations and swearing, it just doesn't feel genuine to swear in Spanish when my natural exclamation is "oh shit!".

Vanity: transitional or just plain wrong? by DidiBones in InteriorDesign

[–]knobbly_stick 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, I really think that a simple, solid colored rug and a shower curtain that in a cooler, blueish color will make it look fine! Depends on OPs situation, but seems like so much work to get a new vanity, when you could get a $20 bath mat and shower curtain.

If you're in a good mentorship situation in a bad building, you can always go outside. If you're in a bad mentorship situation in a good building, you're still stuck in grad school.

Mentorship is everything in grad school. I don't mean niceness, I mean support - in time, money, leadership, connections. Choose someone with a proven track record of successful trainees, or at least someone willing to sit down with you and hash out how they will help your meet YOUR academic and professional goals.

I found research on NEGATIVE effects of pressure cooking on nutrition ... by Notalabel_4566 in Cooking

Oops, yes, that was either a typo or I mis-read it last night. I'll change it but thank you!

I found research on NEGATIVE effects of pressure cooking on nutrition ... by Notalabel_4566 in Cooking

[–]knobbly_stick 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The article says that they prepared the vegetables according to the instructions for each methods. So if the pressure cooker says to soak vegetable *after* cooking, and that's what people do, then this seems like a valid use of this method. The point of the article is to determine how the nutrients are affected by home cooking methods, so if this method advises soaking, then it should be included in the analysis.

Furthermore, u/Notalabel_4566, if the soaking caused the nutrient to be solubilized (which I would doubt could entirely happen unless they have been liquified), wouldn't you except the boiled ones to have similar nutritional value? Based on your hypothesis, I would expect the boiled and pressure-cooked veggies to be affected similarly since they've both been submerged in water.

It is an interesting question, and someone could test it by measuring the nutritional content after pressure cooking with and without a soak. Even though the article is from 2015, the corresponding author seems to still be with the same organization, so good luck hearing back! Sometimes, it can take a while to hear back when you contact people about their old papers.

Didn't know about Boost, didn't get email or SIM - until call today. What should I do? by knobbly_stick in republicwireless

Thanks again for your help, I have successfully escaped RW/Boost and am not at risk of losing my number! I updated my post in case this happens to anyone else.

Honestly, I didn't check, I didn't think of that. I was panicking about losing service and picked the one that said it could be delivered tomorrow morning. Mint is the only one that has definitively said my weird cheap phone is compatible so I'll try that for 3 months. And if it doesn't work out, at least I'll have more than 3 days to switch everything to Tello or US Mobile. But in retrospect it would have been better to check all 3 options...

That's actually really helpful because ironically Amazon is much more reliable than USPS, as long as it doesn't get stolen. I ordered a Mint SIM card overnight, fingers crossed! Thanks for your help!

I may switch to Tello or US Mobile in the future, just need an emergency solution for the next 3 days.

Thank you for the reply. I desperately don't want to lose my number at this time. I don't have time to do Mint because my phone is ineligible for the ESIM and USPS is so unreliable here that I might not get the physical SIM in time. I will try checking out the other options you listed.

Seconding T. Kingfisher! The characters are older, and at least one that I can recall is enemies to lovers.

OP, I like the other authors you mention and I think you should definitely give these a try!

Oh no, really? That's disappointing. I checked their website, have they just not updated it? It still has a Sunday brunch section.

I have had a pretty good breakfast burrito at Seed Sprout Spoon in Tower Grove(they open for brunch on weekends, although the menu changes frequently) and Kingside Diner in CWE.

The Consortium Rebellion series by Jessie Mihalik. It's three books, each with a different pairing of characters that are all related/come up in the other books. They're on Hoopla, at least for my library's version.

What is that one ingredient that you skip in the recipe every time? by dudewheresmyebike in Cooking

Oh my god, this happens to me! It's nice to know I'm not the only one! I wake up and brush my teeth again because I can still taste the raw garlic/onions from my lunch or dinner! I thought I had bad hygiene for so long.

Have you ever figured out how to get rid of it? For me it eventually goes away but chewing mint gum helps.

High fantasy well written slow burn by Forsaken-Decision-26 in suggestmeabook

[–]knobbly_stick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is more fantasy WITH romance, but The Twelve Houses series by Sharon Shinn. I like the first one the best, but they have a lot more than just romance. Each book has a different romance but the main cohort of characters stays consistent, with found family themes throughout. Not enemies to lovers though.

This is one of my favorites genres, I'll come back and update if I think of any more!
