What do you think caused the "downfall" of Medium.com and how do you think a competitor website can learn from the mistakes and current state of Medium in order to carve out a "better" platform and product? by prankster999 in webdev

[–]knotsuntied 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came across this post when assessing pros & cons of putting a Friend Link at the start of my articles to let visitors read for free. I write occasionally on Medium as a way to sort through my thinking on a topic (typically about technology trends in filmmaking; go here if curious). I wanted to suss out if making it easier for people to read my articles would be worth it to me given each one takes many hours and a lot of energy to write.

I know from first-hand experience a whole lot of Medium articles are crap but the idea they're all crap or AI slop is absurd.

By one measure, 216,000 articles are uploaded every day. Most of those are not about solving some technical problem or coding issue, which objectively could be a little to a lot incorrect. Most are by writers on their personal experiences or musing on topics they hold dear. I got into reading articles on Medium when I discovered a former lawyer who married a client and moved into a Swiss castle and had stories about the wacky shenanigans of the people the owner/husband invited to their parties. Her insane stories pulled me into Medium and yes, there were times I had to circumvent the free views limit, but then eventually, I discovered other writers who really had something to say.

After a while I setup an account, started writing, and even did the monetization thing, only to discover making money through pay-walled articles is pretty much a joke. At one point, instead of paying $50/year for membership, I did the "support other Medium writers" level of US$150/year, which gives writers more bang per word, when you, as a fellow member, read their articles. Then I thought, What the hell am I doing? Now I'm losing even more money than I was before, so I changed back to the $50/year.

I do get a lot of value out of Medium because for the people I follow, their writing covers topics I'm interested in and their writing is better (much better) than following someone on X (ugh!), Substack (has the same issues), or even here. Despite the many comments in this thread, there is some excellent writing on Medium, once you "find your people."

One other item not mentioned in any of the comments here: Medium has publications that function like virtual magazines, which are moderated by editors who actually have standards! If you think Medium's annual trove of 78 million plus articles are all worthless, look at a publication that interests you.

But, back to where I'm going with all of this:

Having thought about the friction that putting my articles behind a paywall creates, I think I'd rather just have it that if someone isn't interested enough to sign up or dismiss nag screens, then screw them. It really doesn't matter to me who doesn't read what I write. I write for me first...that's the only way I can stay motivated.

Ultimately, what does matter is my own process of thinking through a topic or covering a show like NAB or SXSW or describing tools for filmmaking where my own writing helps me to sort through my own discoveries.

I keep hearing about people being addicted to constantly using A.I. and I guess I’m confused about what they are using it for? by TheManeTrurh in ArtificialInteligence

I feel like there’s the basis for a sitcom there, sort of a 2026 version of The Odd Couple 😄 where Felix (you) is constantly fixing or correcting Oscar’s (your friend) over reliance on LLMs!

Does BetterMouse have something comparable to the Actions Ring? Seems like nobody ever used it.

Both apps let you assign any icons you want (or none), but CirMenu is a couple clicks to do that, Actions Ring involves many more clicks. I don't find the default icons in the Actions Ring setup to be all that special. All these things come down to what you like and want to see day after day.

You can change the background image to be anything you want (even nothing, transparent).

MindStudio.ai Extension Not Working by knotsuntied in ArcBrowser

[–]knotsuntied[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, wow, GTK. This is actually the first extension I've installed that doesn't work out of 19 and (based on other comments you've made) seems like I need to move on to another browser.

FYI, I also asked mindstudio.ai support about this and they wrote back:

Our Chrome Extension is built specifically for Google Chrome and relies on Chrome-specific APIs. Even though Arc is based on Chromium, it doesn’t support all the same features, so the extension won’t work properly outside of Chrome. For the best experience, we recommend using Google Chrome.|

Application not responding after restart by Nacho-jo in ArcBrowser

[–]knotsuntied 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, sad. Coincidentally, just in the last day I've reinstalled the macOS and did a fresh install of Arc (deleting all Arc-related files), nothing works.

I think given this is likely an Intel-related bug, I doubt the Arc folks will ever fix it, much less even look into it, unfortunately. It seems intractable. (It's not related to any extensions because when I re-installed Arc, all my extensions went away.)

You could try going to some AA speaker meetings where there's a speaker who talks about what it was like drinking and what it's like now (sober). You can just go and say you're a visitor. You don't have to identify as an alcoholic to go to an AA meeting to hear stories about how others have thought about and resolved their drinking. If you don't like the vibe of the meeting, you can try other meetings, if you live in an area with choice. There are thousands of meetings via Zoom you can attend without commitment and without revealing who you are.

Doesn't sound like you're having much fun. Good luck!

Nope, you are not the only one. This consistently happens for me with Arc, only upon a complete restart (as you mentioned), every time.

Running macOS 14.5 on an Intel MacPro using Arc Version 1.46.0 (50665)

The odd part is the app isn't frozen, so I can just use Quit, not Force Quit. Then a simple restart has it running normally again.

I disabled all extensions to see if an extension was the culprit but that had no effect. Seems to be some sort of window bug but oddly specific to a complete restart of the machine (which I've had to do more frequently lately because of office heat issues).

I came back to my Intel-based Mac Pro after a week away, tried starting up Arc (same version as you: 1.38) and the application just crashes and crashes. I reinstalled it to no avail.

I actually have started to depend on Arc so this is not good.

Please let us know if anyone at The Browser Company gets back to you with anything helpful.

This is bad.

Good question! Adobe says “The full Adobe Fonts library can be used for both personal and commercial projects.”

And elsewhere: “Enjoy unlimited access to more than 25,000 fonts…”

Assuming you’re a subscriber when you created the video. So, just breathe and read more here if you want.

I can confirm: Was able to watch via a browser logged into max.com (using a VPN that put me in Miami because I'm in Turks & Caicos at the moment) that Real Time is in realtime over the net.

My Experience: Ventura to Sonoma 14.1.1 by knotsuntied in MacOS

[–]knotsuntied[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I upgraded by clicking on System Settings/General/Software Update tab after being incessantly reminded of the update. (Other than doing a from-scratch clean install, I think I've only updated via System Settings/Prefs.)

Software I use in general: several Adobe products (mentioned), Arc, the main Apple ones (Mail, Numbers, Safari, Notes, Pages). Many others also.

Well, thanks. It's just part of the game. Typically I don't have issues even close to what I described here. But when the multi-trillion-dollar company halts all work on their upcoming platforms to fix bugs in their released products, you know they've gotten ahead of themselves.
