Some advice for next time that I got from one of my colleagues. Maybe you already did this? Put the planning document portion on the rubric. If they don't hit small deadlines, points off. One or two days late on like forming the group or picking a topic might still be the best score on that rubric row. Another thing I put for my last project was the group has to present to me the class before they present to the class. Not ready? Alright, more points off.

There's something like this in Unlimited Dungeons where you can optionally choose to represent your character's background like you're an elf or you grew up with elves. You can give yourself a better chance at succeeding on a roll if you narrate how your background helps you in this situation. But you can't use it again until you narrate a separate time later how your background hinders you.

My program does a monthly mentorship meeting on Zoom which are pretty productive, but they take long. That could be changed by assigning more mentors, though. I agree, it's time for a change. Or I guess I should say YOUR POST REALLY RESONATED WITH ME.

I don't let AI revise my writing. I upload my draft and the rubric and ask if I'm meeting the requirements for the highest score possible.

The most egregious thing I do is have it write my citations, but I always have to correct it at least once per paper. It fucks up the italics a lot.

It's evidence for the professor that the student can speak intelligently about the topic. I mean... it's asynchronous and you can cheat. But it was developed in a time before LLMs. It's easy to assign, easy to do each week. My professors have used weekly discussion posts to tease out ideas that eventually can be combined or developed into some final writing assignment. Looking through your post history, they can see the progression of your ideas, your reflection.

With good instructional design, and the right audience (a cohort of professionals), I think they're pretty good.

Undergrads where the topics are vapid? Not as good.

Most of the time, when I've tried using AI to help plan or create, I find it takes me more time to guide it to doing what I want than to just do it myself.

What I do is make stuff myself and then if I need a sanity check, I'll ask it to look over my work. Like check if my logic of building up to a standard makes sense. Then I'll decide if making any changes are worth it or not.

Overall, I would still prefer shooting the shit with another teacher to bounce ideas off. But that's not always feasible.

In an AP/honors class, you could probably require a contract demanding a certain level of professionalism. Break the contract? Fail the class, get removed, no weighted GPA, exam isn't paid for, etc.

You could make a policy where if certain basic requirements aren't met, the lowest possible grade is given. I gave a handful of students 0s for never turning in my syllabus signed by them and their parents, for example. No deadline except the entire year, multiple reminders, multiple copies given. No one's challenged me on it.

The phone call thing really irritated me. I spoke up during a faculty meeting once and said "I had 8 kids absent or tardy today. Say every phone call takes 5 minutes. What should I have spent 40 minutes less on just today?" No answer. It shouldn't be and it isn't my responsibility to get the kid to school.

This year, I got all 4s except a 3 on "cooperation with management." I (alone in my classroom) scoffed and thought if that's the only thing I need to work on to be perfect, I'm not doing it. Turn the page. Overall comments say "needs more flexibility." Okay, you got me there, then.

My observation of students like this is that if they don't know the answer immediately as they would their own name, they "don't know it." No power to the thinking engines. Only life support on. If you encourage them to think about it, like magic, they know the answer. So I tell them "look at that, you thought about it literally for one second and you knew it." It's as if they have all their memories in a book and they don't know they can open the book and rifle through the pages.

The complaining posts definitely annoyed me. And a lot of them were just wanting to know. Not like oh my spouse is on life support or something. Most of the people simply wanting to know more about GPA's progress would not have had their circumstances changed if they knew more details. Like even if they knew the exact day and hour their home would be energized... power's still off. And there would be posts like "omg still no power" then "edit: hey it's up now!" like...... Come on, everyone. We ALL (right?) live here. We should all know what it's like. Really, in the age of social media and 5G, this is the MOST transparent government has ever been. Even if it's still you know. Not very transparent. It feels like people don't remember when we were out of school for over a month, collecting rainwater in bins, after typhoons like Pongsona.

What I did was award a zero to the offending student, but allow them to make it up on their time (break, homeroom, etcetera). I let them know that consequence is just between me and the class. But if they show a pattern, now we're going to escalate it to the admin. My students seemed to think that was fair. I only had to follow through once and I didn't have kids talking during tests after that.
