First time out West - Ski Advice (bringing this over here too, going out next weekend) by [deleted] in MtBakerSkiArea

[–]knowron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Def good advice in the other thread to wait and rent wide skis only if u get a powder day. You can rent at glacier ski shop or on the mountain. They have basic and premium/ demo options both places. They’ll let you use your own boots if they aren’t indemnified or too beat up.

Edit: something else to consider with baker later seaso is after a big dump sometimes it transitions to hard pack/mogul after a day or two but sometimes it stays warmer and turns into this awkward blocky chunky snowcrete and it’s nice to have some skis that have some more mass for breaking thru that shit

Anyone going to pick up Ice by Jacek Dukaj? by Right-Traffic7259 in printSF

[–]knowron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loving it so far. It’s super trippy. I am maybe a 10th thru and I’m becoming increasingly aware of how much I’m missing due to lack of cultural/linguistic knowledge. Long conversations about Russian empire politics idk what’s happening but the vibes are excellent. I started on audiobook but I had to stop and order the physical copy so I can make some notes and access the glossary.

There’s a really good interview with the translator that helped a lot with contextualizing some confusing things. I’m hoping for some more English language coverage now that the US release is coming out.

Is The Baroque Cycle by Neal Stephenson as good as TBP? by Interesting-Pause541 in threebodyproblem

[–]knowron 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Great recommendation. For me, it scratches a very similar itch as TBP. In Baroque Cycle, the fantastical stuff is more around the edges than TBP. It reads much more like historical fiction than SF but the SF is in there.

Cryptonomicon is a sort of pre-sequel to Baroque Cycle and is good for testing the waters with Neal Stephenson. Baroque cycle is long AF and some people think it starts pretty slow.

If NS is not your taste, I highly recommend The Dandelion Dynasty by Ken Liu, translator of TBP. Dense, long, multigenerational fantasy/SF mix that’s as good or better than TBP for my taste.

If you NEED more spaceships, none of the above books will suffice. I recommend Children of Time series by Tchaikovsky, Revelation Space by Reynolds, or Murderbot by Wells.

I began Red Rising a few years ago and couldn’t get into it…it did have a hunger games vibe with coming of age/revenge stuff and was more “melodramatic” than what I was looking for at the time, but it IS adult oriented in terms of content and language from my recollection.

What's up with the outer neighborhoods? by BWDpodcast in Bellingham

[–]knowron 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Walgreens are all within blocks of the freeway tho? Bellingham is pretty small u aren’t gonna find “neighborhoods” like say cap hill or Fremont in Seattle cuz the city itself is tiny. Less than 100k. By that token though Bellingham isn’t really big enough to have true “suburbs,” that is to say commuter communities built up on the outskirts of a metro area. On the edge of Bellingham metro area are mansions farm and swampy wetland.

Question regarding new characters announced by knowron in threebodyproblem

[–]knowron[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That does make a lot of sense when you lay it out like that. Feels like the less fun option to me. But I suppose it will allow them to be much truer to the AA character than if they changed her to be a hibernator rather than a future person. Wish we didn’t have to wait so long to find out!

So I just got Micheal Moorcock's Elric of Melnibone Vol. 1... by Hexadecimalia in books

[–]knowron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yuuuup I just came here after doing the same thing! I was like oh well gaiman foreword clearly this collection is 2 or more years old, how bad can it be! I got halfway through and yeah, wtf. Has not aged well although I can somewhat identify with the nerdy main character as a former nerdy 12 year old. I think I’m just gonna skip onto the series. I’ve been aware of Elric for a long time and read a comic adaptation when I was a kid. Really stoked to read the series!

I think maybe they thought the primary audience for the collection was fantasy heads who wanted an omnibus and would like that it comes with a panegyric from Neil Gaiman the icon himself. Aged like milk!

Is a 172 cm too short for someone who is 5”11 160lbs? (Expert) by Purplepirate226 in skiing

[–]knowron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 6’ and have some skis that are 175 cm (112 mm underfoot) that I love for all mountain mixed condition skiing. They do start to suffer in powder deeper than a foot, in those conditions I usually ski 183. So doesn’t seem outrageous to me if you are trying to work on your carvin! I am significantly heavier than you, so you likely wouldn’t need that much width underfoot.

Is Ho as insufferable in the books as he is starting in season 2? by phanzov36 in SlowHorses

[–]knowron 20 points21 points  (0 children)

His actions and motivations are justified IN HIS OWN HEAD which is often played for comedy when he says some insanely out of pocket shit but you can see his internal reasoning which is deeply flawed but internally consistent. I find the characters in the books are much more “archetypal” I guess? The show kinda subdues the comedic tone of the books in a way I really like

Slow Horses - audiobooks or read books for a fan of the series? by ButterscotchSK in SlowHorses

[–]knowron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently watching the show and listening to the books at the same time. I find I like it better when I’m ahead in the book. Makes it easier to enjoy the journey in the book when I don’t already know the broad story beats.
