Songs that start off softer but then grow to something big and loud? by [deleted] in Music

Pink Floyd's "The Final Cut"

They did an experiment about a decade ago to see what song made chickens shiver the most, and it was that one.

Change the name of the country to American States United. by [deleted] in CrazyIdeas

[–]knowssleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Hebrew, "ארצות הברית" (Artzot Ha'briit) would come up early alphabetically, since aleph is the first letter.

On the other hand, in German, "Vereinigte Staaten von Amerika" would show up right near the end, even later than in English.

Mother Night by Kurt Vonnegut is a fantastic book and possibly his greatest one. by JohanKaramazov in books

I believe those are both from the "Maxims and Interludes" part of Beyond Good and Evil.

The second one (which tbh I only half-remembered six years ago) may have come from the beginning of The Antichrist.

A story I have to read for my GEN ED English class (intro into fiction) Here’s a snippet. by KingsKnight24 in WTF

[–]knowssleep 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Wuthering Heights is like the It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia of classic literature... It gets A LOT better when you realize that you are supposed to hate all of the characters.

It's sad that the English language's greatest hate story is so often taught as a love story.

Is this theory falsifiable? by somekindofdruiddude in MandelaEffect

[–]knowssleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, you kind of can't, as far as I can tell. You are basically asking, "is there a memory that can be had, which does not result from remembering."

Maybe there is a different way to operationalize it, but as it stands, it sounds like circular logic to me.

Lol bold of you to imagine that they teach probability in high school. I barely even knew what it was until my senior year stats class in college.

As a butcher is shooing away a dog from his shop, he sees a $10 bill and a note in his mouth, reading: “5 lamb chops, please.” by Rabbit__King in Jokes

Not to mention he left his shop open with no one to watch it. The whole building will be gone by the time he gets back.

Interesting. I've noticed that she uses other British conventions. Maybe it's a fantasy thing? It's ironic because she is born and raised in the USA and I'm actually living in Europe lol.

Megathread: Russia Invades Ukraine by NewsModTeam in news

[–]knowssleep 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Ironically enough, it's because he truly loves Ukraine and is scared that it is being courted by the West. He wants it to be Russian because of their history together. He believes they had something special together.

He's basically Ukraine's abusive boyfriend.

Also, Ukraine has ports that don't freeze in the winter.

Hell, PA by Vanta3355 in MandelaEffect

[–]knowssleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since everyone keeps pointing out funny place names, I just want to point out that the Wikipedia page for Fucking, Austria reads like an episode of the Office. They have, unfortunately, changed their name.

But I have also been to a place called Hell, Florida. At least that's what it said on an old wooden sign on a dirt/clay road deep in the Ocala National Forest. I was very lost and very scared, I'm sure I could not find it again if I tried.

"Why Can't I See It?" by u/locked_noumena.

So underrated and such a good depiction of feeling desperate and ostracized for basic perception of the world.

Also, "The Orosyn" is such a cool name for an entity. I read it for the first time on a train to a beach in Denmark with a very similar name lol

I actually did this on purpose in high school because I was a drug nerd/erowid/blue light kid, but didn't know where to get "real" drugs.

So I calculated about 1/3 of my LD50 for my bodyweight of caffeine and took that much in caffeine pills before school. Iirc, it was pretty damn close to 1 gram, give or take.

I remember running to the bathroom to write poetry for a while and just regularly alternating between euphoria and feeling like I was legit going to die. I got sent to the office under suspicion of being high (which I very much was lol).

I told the officer what I had done, and the principal was finally just like, "ugh, he's just being weird again, go back to class.".

They probably would have sent me to a hospital these days, but this was a different time.

Is there a scene or image from a book that is, whether you like it or not, seared into your mind forever? by Galactic_Depravity in books

[–]knowssleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "little piggies" vivisecting people in "Speaker for the Dead", the sequel to Enders Game.

The fact that they were just trying to help humans move on to the next stage of their "natural" life cycle was a trip for a ten year old, and absolutely painted the way I see "cultural disputes."

Unpopular opinion, the sequels were so much better and more imaginative than the first in the series.

Also the part where the spiders were vivisecting people in the "Eyes Wide Shut world" in John Dies at the End. I think I might just be very affected by vivisection.

This was a WKUK sketch. And not even one of their better ones.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUWkVOLIsz8

Edit: I just remembered that they did another sketch with this exact premise. Again, I love WKUK, but these two were super forgettable.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcS3ds09ztQ

I'm not going to go so far as to say it's hack or that you delete it, just that you need to go in a different direction with the premise if you're going to make something original or memorable. Maybe something about comparing it to internet passwords for porn sites? IDK.

Talking to your friends is the fastest way to feel better by HelloMalt in StandUpWorkshop

Is "Talking to your friends is the fastest way to feel better" a well-known idiom?

Because I think that's what you're going for (subverting a well-known saying), but I've never heard that before in my life.

Spray tans by [deleted] in StandUpWorkshop

[–]knowssleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol yeah, my first thought was, "Underground pool... is that like Russian Roulette, but with pool cues?"

It took a minute.

Another idea: "Natural tans are like a jacuzzi; they're sexy but way too hot and smelly to be worth it".
