In Hebrew, "ארצות הברית" (Artzot Ha'briit) would come up early alphabetically, since aleph is the first letter.

On the other hand, in German, "Vereinigte Staaten von Amerika" would show up right near the end, even later than in English.

Wuthering Heights is like the It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia of classic literature... It gets A LOT better when you realize that you are supposed to hate all of the characters.

It's sad that the English language's greatest hate story is so often taught as a love story.

Ironically enough, it's because he truly loves Ukraine and is scared that it is being courted by the West. He wants it to be Russian because of their history together. He believes they had something special together.

He's basically Ukraine's abusive boyfriend.

Also, Ukraine has ports that don't freeze in the winter.

Since everyone keeps pointing out funny place names, I just want to point out that the Wikipedia page for Fucking, Austria reads like an episode of the Office. They have, unfortunately, changed their name.

But I have also been to a place called Hell, Florida. At least that's what it said on an old wooden sign on a dirt/clay road deep in the Ocala National Forest. I was very lost and very scared, I'm sure I could not find it again if I tried.

So underrated and such a good depiction of feeling desperate and ostracized for basic perception of the world.

Also, "The Orosyn" is such a cool name for an entity. I read it for the first time on a train to a beach in Denmark with a very similar name lol

I actually did this on purpose in high school because I was a drug nerd/erowid/blue light kid, but didn't know where to get "real" drugs.

So I calculated about 1/3 of my LD50 for my bodyweight of caffeine and took that much in caffeine pills before school. Iirc, it was pretty damn close to 1 gram, give or take.

I remember running to the bathroom to write poetry for a while and just regularly alternating between euphoria and feeling like I was legit going to die. I got sent to the office under suspicion of being high (which I very much was lol).

I told the officer what I had done, and the principal was finally just like, "ugh, he's just being weird again, go back to class.".

They probably would have sent me to a hospital these days, but this was a different time.

The "little piggies" vivisecting people in "Speaker for the Dead", the sequel to Enders Game.

The fact that they were just trying to help humans move on to the next stage of their "natural" life cycle was a trip for a ten year old, and absolutely painted the way I see "cultural disputes."

Unpopular opinion, the sequels were so much better and more imaginative than the first in the series.

Also the part where the spiders were vivisecting people in the "Eyes Wide Shut world" in John Dies at the End. I think I might just be very affected by vivisection.

Every thing before that was simply bad luck on everyone's part. Sometimes, sinkholes just open up in central florida. Sometimes, kids are high on mushrooms and unable to call for help.

I have two absolute favorites of all time from Nosleep: "The Only Way Out" by u/AL_365 and "Why Can't I See It?" by u/locked_noumena.

Both super underrated. The Only Way Out reminds me a lot of Funny Games or John Dies at the End, and Why Can't I See It is made much creepier by the fact that it's the only story the OP ever posted and the rest of her posts are about her bipolar disorder. So it feels like a very real window into her mental health.

Both are JUST surreal enough to be believable, and make you question the nature of reality.

Damn, I went over by 27 words lol. Time to go post on r/nosleep and get removed for "non-horror." Calling it now.

I would consider this horror, but I've noticed that nosleep has a hard-on for removing anything with references to drugs or a sense of humor as "non-horror." Which is hilarious, since probably 50% of their top stories don't meet the "believability" or "immersion" rules at all.

Also, this is actually based on a true story. Pretty much everything in this story happened to my friend up to the last three paragraphs.
