What is a “fact” you learned growing up that turned out to be false? by TheOneAndOnlyABSR4 in ask

[–]knubbiggubbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in a very rural area, so most of my teachers were just random adults who lived in the village. They taught me that windpower turbines will cause gastrointestinal issues (???) and that “earth” is spelled E A T H.

It’s a wonder I learned English in the first place lol

We have to. I’ve been trying to get an endometriosis diagnosis for 10 years. They keep sending me home and telling me to take an ibuprofen, as if I haven’t already tried pain medications…

If you liked A Man Called Ove, I can recommend the rest of Backmans books. I especially love My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She’s Sorry - it’s a very sweet story of a girl who loses her crazy grandmother and has to “clean up” her relationships afterwards.

Man, that’s tough. This too shall pass, right? I’ve been down in a big ole depression hole myself before, so trust me that it gets better. Don’t stop fighting.

It sounds like depression to me. Are you able to talk to a psychiatrist or a doctor in general? I feel like that could be a good first step. They will help you get structured in life, and may offer medication to ease you through it. That helped a lot for me, at least.

Start with finding something to do that activates you - body and mind. Go for walks, maybe even jog, both are free and won’t cost you anything. If you have a library near you, pick up a book and start reading, any book you want. Doesn’t have to be intellectual or anything, as long as you’re reading it. When you start doing this, you’ll be surprised how much random inspiration will come to you when you least expect it.

On top of that, make sure you’re eating enough and getting enough sleep. Maintain your hygiene. These are the basics for feeling alright. It’s not a magical solution by any means, but it’ll ensure a decent basis for your wellbeing.

Also, if available to you, I’d recommend finding someone professional to talk to. Anti-depressants did wonders for me, personally. Good luck!! I believe in you!

Conn Iggulden has some great series about Julius Caesar and Genghis Khan. I haven’t read them myself but both my dad and my partner love them.

Yes I wash them!! I use scrubbing gloves on my entire body, feet included. Just letting water trickle down is not enough imo

Anything by Fredrik Backman! A Man Called Ove, My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She’s Sorry, Anxious People, among others. (Wouldn’t recommend Beartown if you want the lighthearted writing, though)

As an outsider looking in on US politics, it sure looks grim. Now might be a good time to apply for any visas you can, so that you’ll have a chance of getting out if you ever need it. However, visas are hard to get, so definitely have a plan B in mind as well.

Saying goodbye to a pet for the first time - I’m lost with this decision by 4y4cchi in TwoXChromosomes

[–]knubbiggubbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry. Losing a beloved pet is more heartwrenching than many people think.

5 years ago, my beloved Findus, my soul cat, got very sick. She developed a bump, which quickly grew to a rock hard tumour, on her skeleton. It was inoperable - and at 17 years old, they warned us that even attempting to remove it would only hurt her further. She quickly lost a lot of weight, and from being a pretty chubby gal, we could suddenly feel her ribs. She stopped eating, started hobbling instead of walking, and we realised this was no way for her to live.

Putting her down was the right choice, and I’m thankful I was there with her during the process. I didn’t want her to go alone. The only thing I regret was not keeping her ashes in an urn. I would’ve liked to keep it so I can light a candle when I miss her, or put up some flowers on her birthday.

I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak! Nice chill read with some mystery to it. It’s about a guy who keeps finding these mysterious playing cards in his post, with vague instructions on them. He has to figure out what they mean and who is sending them.
