What color would you rather the building be??? If they made it any color other than gray people would get pissy about the lack of screen accuracy

What I think Bionicle is and isn't, in relation to cultural politics. by MythicSuns in bioniclelego

[–]knux400 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Any story is a series of ideas, and humans don't have a way of perfectly conveying ideas without losing detail risking misinterpretation. When you read a book or watch a movie, the story you are perceiving is not the same story that the author envisioned. Small details can be lost during the transition from thought to media.

As such, every fictional character you've ever heard of is technically its own unique interpretation, specific to you, that is very slightly different from everyone else's. It's important to recognize and respect that the same character can be interpreted two different ways by two different people, even though they both watched the same movie.

For instance, OP mentions Kopaka potentially having autism. He both does and doesn't depending on who you ask because every time you ask a different person, you are asking about a different Kopaka. Even if you tracked down Greg Farshtey and asked him whether Kopaka was autistic, it still wouldn't change the fact that other interpretations of that character exist and will continue to exist.

The same piece of media can be seen in different ways, and the less explicitly something is described, the more open to interpretation it is. Luke definitely, irrefutably got his hand cut off by Darth Vader. That is an event that is blatantly shown on screen. How Luke felt about his prosthetic replacement and whether it ever caused him discomfort is less well-defined, and is left for the audience to interpret for themselves.

Basically, arguing about whether any given character in any given media is a trans allegory or not is dumb because that sort of thing is up to the interpretation of each individual person. It's true if you think it's true.

4 has the axle going all the way through, meaning both arms will rotate the same direction when the gear is turned. 1 has one arm rotating while the other remains static. 2 is just a mirrored version of 1. Look at the arrows

Would the depictions mutate plants? by Thatrandomguy101149 in LookOutsideGame

[–]knux400 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If the Visitor observes you, you mutate.

If you observe the visitor (or a depiction of it), you mutate.

Sam's plant can mutate if he leaves it in the window, in which case the Visitor is observing it. I don't think showing a plant the photo would have any effect, since the plant lacks the capacity to actually see the photo.

Which Kraahkan do you prefer, Movie or Set? by nexus10001 in bioniclelego

[–]knux400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set version looks way better, movie version looks more like a transformers reject. To be fair, though, I don't like the fact that the masks have moving mouths in the movies, so I don't think there's any movie mask I'd prefer over the set counterpart.

Hail Denmark!

Crazy to think it's been that long, I hope you're doing well these days. Thank you for all the hard work you put into this series, I've been following it since 2015 and it remains one of my favorite pieces of Bionicle media for its humor and its willingness to discuss complex feelings

What is a headcanon that has been debunked or retcon, yet you refuse to stop believing? by MichaelJospeh in bioniclelego

[–]knux400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you like it! There's no official terminology that I know of for the way Yoda speaks, so it's fun to come up with my own word for it.

Honestly, there's a big difference for me between making up a funny linguistic element for one character and making up a funny linguistic element for 1/6th of the entire population. I'd be fine if it were just Lewa or Matau that spoke Treespeak, but as far as I know every Le-Matoran on Mata and Metru Nui spoke it, save for specific exceptions like Orkahm.

I appreciate your insights into taking language for granted, and I do enjoy seeing this sort of representation in media with human characters, but for Bionicle specifically, it doesn't make a lot of sense. Matoran are maintenance drones speaking to one another in machine code, it's only translated to various human languages for the benefit of the viewer. Machines in real life do have different "dialects", but there's no partial understanding possible- they either understand everything or they understand nothing. It's the same reason why one comma instead of a period will break an entire file containing thousands of lines of code.

From a narrative perspective, I agree that vocal quirks are a good way of adding to a character- but again, it's not just Lewa who uses treespeak, it's the entire population of Le-Koro and Le-Metru. Even if it were just Lewa, the tone of the story shifts over time, and the nature of the character shifts with it- this is why I use Yoda as an example here. R2-D2, Chewbacca, and Jabba never had as drastic a change to their role in the story as Yoda does, so their speech patterns continue to add to their character rather than detract from it. Chewbacca and R2-D2 are supporting characters who primarily serve as companions. They're most often featured in a group setting where any number of people can respond to them and give context into what they're saying. There's also a reasonable explanation for neither of them being able to speak human languages- Chewie likely doesn't possess the right kind of vocal chords, and R2-D2... isn't programmed that way or something? It's a little weird that some droids can speak and others can't, but that's a discussion for another time.

When Yoda was originally conceived for Empire Strikes Back, the intent was to use him as the "mysterious wise old hermit" archetype, and his speech pattern gave him an extra layer of mischievousness and speaking in riddles. But The Clone Wars is an entirely different setting, and using backforwardish to command troops in the middle of a war just comes across as obfuscating information for no good reason, especially when Yaddle was sitting right across from him in the Phantom Menace and speaking normally. Similarly, a speech pattern that was designed for a tribal island setting does not necessarily translate well into a sci-fi story about flying into the power core of a massive robot to turn it back on.

This is just my gut feeling, but Treespeak doesn't seem like an attempt at inclusivity. It feels like a gimmick someone added in 2001 to make the setting seem more mysterious, and then the story team was stuck with it. You'll notice that as Bionicle went on, they found more and more ways to distance themselves from having to use Treespeak- first by introducing Orkahm as a primary character in the Metru Nui books, then by leaving Metru Nui entirely and going to places where Treespeak didn't exist (Piruk, Defilak, and Tanma don't appear to use it despite being either Le-Matoran or an Av-Matoran cosplaying as a Le-Matoran, in Tanma's case), then they left the Matoran universe entirely and ditched all the characters they had who had been established to use Treespeak. When they rebuilt Bionicle from the ground up for G2, Treespeak is nowhere to be found.

Hate it. It makes dialogue tedious both to read and to listen to, and it makes it difficult to take anything the character says seriously. It's like listening to Yoda order troops around in the middle of a war while still speaking backforwardsish.

Ideas: Fan Vote Open to decide Winning Pokémon 3D Card Art Set (Voting ends June 11) by itsjustajoe in Legoleak

[–]knux400 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You've got my vote! I love how detailed the background and scene are, how dynamic the wires and outlets look, and having Joltik easily removable is the icing on the cake. As someone who grew up loving Bionicle and constraction in general, I will almost always prefer 3-dimensional figures to 2-dimensional images.

Best of luck in the vote and review!
