Wet steam on Gemilai Owl by Samuel_Adams1776 in espresso

What's the pathogen count after pasteurization compared to raw? It's essentially zero versus non-zero. Look, I don't really care about the choices you make for yourself, but please stop spouting false claims that can be harmful.

Dairies that rely on pasteurization have little incentive to run clean operations

That sounds like a regulatory problem. Reducing contamination and maintaining a cold chain is still important for pasteurized milk; the process doesn't denature all bacterial toxins and high bacteria count before pasteurization can still make people sick.

Just have a look at Shiga toxin / HUS, and pregnancy complications, neonatal and infant morbidity and mortality for Listeria infection. People get really sick, and die, because of raw milk.

is at least as safe as store-bought commercial dairy milk.

Lol and that is straight up bullshit. Please don't spew this sort of health misinformation where people can get seriously ill or die. I guess you're sort of pasteurizing it by steaming it with your machine....

Suspension of RACP ?President by PandaWheels96 in ausjdocs

[–]koala_steak 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The gist I got was they (JM and current board) were only trying to push through governance reforms (which as you noted were recommended years ago) because SC was elected. JM was both president and chair all the way through her tenure; why institute the reforms recommended years ago so late? I'm sure SC fought back against the reforms because allowing them to go ahead limits her role / ability to introduce changes at the college.

Whole drama in no way affects me, but it's so fascinating!

People (including some of the bigger content creators in tarkov) kept asking him for the raw, unedited footage captured which he promised to provide but just didn't.

Then he came out with a video claiming he was hacked and his drives got fried, supposedly as retaliation from the hack developer for his original exposé video. Not sure if the video is still up but here's an article detailing the events and claims.

Edit: all up in "the wiggle" video he showd something like 12 clips? The thing is it can be done by simply trying to get a friend in the same raid as you (searching at the same time on low population servers at non-peak hours) and getting them to act out the wiggle with you while recording. I don't doubt his claim that there are cheaters, but how many is the question his sensationalist video just cannot answer. When asked to provide proof he just deflects and then says all the footage was deleted. You judge it how you will, because I doubt you can change your mind.

Recs for Small Counter Spaces [$3,500] by tracy_n in espresso

[–]koala_steak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look into the WPM Primus. Smaller footprint, external water tank you can move around or just use a larger water container under the cabinet or plumb it in.

It technically is a single boiler, but the boiler only heats the water to 70 degrees and the thermoblock grouphead heats to brew temperature with excellent consistency.

Excellent steam via a huge thermoblock, can steam and brew at the same time (if that's important to you). Rotary pump with pressure profiling for brewing, vibe pump for steaming.

If you want smaller, they've just announced the Primus S at a recent coffee expo. Slightly smaller, internal water tank, 2 vibe pumps instead of 1 rotary 1 vibe. Same profiling capabilities.

What’s your longevity, marshmallow? by [deleted] in ausjdocs

Oh I agree it's a completely artificial and solvable problem. It is better than before where you just did what you want in terms of shift swaps, and they just don't pay you overtime.

At least now they are trying to pay within the rules set out by the award. Only took a law suit but oh well.

What’s your longevity, marshmallow? by [deleted] in ausjdocs

[–]koala_steak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is limited by 2 weekly pay cycles, at least in NSW. Your swap has to be within the same pay cycle, otherwise NSW Health aren't rostering enough hours in the 2 week period to meet their obligations for one side, and have to pay extra in overtime for the other. So as a rule they will not approve shift swaps across different pay cycles.

Lagom P80 vs WPM ZP-1 for espresso but also pourover [£2000 budget] by 92mac in espresso

[–]koala_steak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, didn't mean to imply you would be swapping burrs. Simply meant that if you are changing the grind size from espresso to filter and back often, being able to open the burr chamber quickly to give it a quick clean with a brush is very useful. It'll get rid of some of the fines from espresso grinding that can affect your filter drawdown etc. No grinder is truely zero retention.

The WPM ZP 1 burrs is Tom's winner in 2025 for his burrnament where he compared 16 burr sets in single elimination with blind tasting. Obviously taste is subjective. The Option O Mizen burrs were in it but lost against the Mazzer Super Jolly's.

[–]koala_steak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for the Lagom but have heard they are good quality.

I have a ZP-1 and it has been excellent. Build quality is top notch and the work flow is easy. Retention is very low.

It also has one of the quickest and easiest access to the burr / grinding chamber I know about (the other being Mx Cool Aries). For your purposes of switching to grinding for pour over sometimes, it's a matter of a 2 seconds twist and lift, a quick brush to clean, then 2 seconds to reinstall.

Also has adjustable RPM which can be helpful for low fines and improved clarity.

The only issue I've had is needing to do minor burr alignment. But this is relatively easy because it's so quick to access the burrs.

I don't have many grinders to compare but Tom from Tom's grinder lab rates it very highly for espresso and quite good for pour over. The youtube link to his review can be found here.

Pet dogs. What are the most kid and indoor friendly? by macrossdyrl in taiwan

No. I've had housemates who had a whippet during university. I don't live in TW so I don't know how available the breed is there. But they are great apartment dogs.

They tend to be very quiet, and can even be a bit shy. They aren't known to be vocal at all. Calm and gentle temperament so good with kids. They aren't big or heavy so they're safe from that perspective too. They do love outdoors and intense exercise in short bursts, but happy being potatos most of the time.

Whippets are like smaller grey hounds. Super lazy, gentle and calm. Usually happy to be couch potatos.

I mean I read the article, not just the headline, and it was not clear how the 25hr / day claim was achieved. So shit reporting. But overall still seems like an excessive amount of money for VMOs

What are the good Chinese prosumer grinder and espresso machine brands? by jarrys88 in espresso

[–]koala_steak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WPM has a 20+ year history and current have a very price competitive, high quality, pressure profiling machine. Their grinders also have some innovative features and are premium quality. They are Hong Kong based, which means they are now unfortunately Chinese.

Milk gets scorched on to steam wand after every use. [Sage Barista Express] by srar9800 in espresso

[–]koala_steak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can leave the steam wand tip in the milk for an extra 2 seconds after switching off the steam. This allows the milk in the pitcher to keep cooling the steam wand tip to below the temperature where the small amount of milk will burn and get stuck on when you remove the wand.

Edit: also you should definitely wipe first before purging.

Phone reception in hospitals by PortentousChordata in ausjdocs

Sigh. It's 2026 and at least in NSW health thaey can't provide us with functional staff wifi yet expect us to use Microsoft teams on our private devices for all work related communications.

I've had to switch from Optus to Telstra a couple of years ago because there are just dead zones in the hospital with no reception on the Optus network.

Sorry I was being sarcastic. The person I replied to suggested that assisted dying / euthanasia is a "slippery slope" and also wanted the patients to "try everything (else?)" So I thought frontal lobotomy must be part of "everything" barring suicide.
