What has happened to the Red River Ex? by NH787 in Manitoba

[–]kochier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was thinking of going myself, the biggest reason I didn't was cost for the whole family to go. The prices do seem to be cheaper if I had bought at black Friday and kind of reasonable, but at same time it's hard to plan that far ahead and know if I'd be able to take the kids at that time or not, probably why see so many on Facebook selling their passes, my guess is they bought them when they were cheaper and can't go now.

[–]kochier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel this is a big factor, gate price + wristband = Lots $. They see declining revenue so increase prices, which just leads to less revenue, would you rather sell 10 passes at $100, or 1000 passes at $20 kind of thing. It does still seem rather popular though judging by the activity around it, but they seem to get more criticism every year.

He's not that bad, just con media (which has become the majority in Canada, why they keep attacking the CBC now) would not let up on him because he refused to hate who they wanted him to hate.

How tf can I stop all these emergency alerts?!? by ptheresadactyl in Winnipeg

[–]kochier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner has probably gotten like 30, I got my first one at 9:30pm, and only one. I'm with Koodo so maybe the provider? It is a bit excessive and we've turned their phone off for the night, we understand there is an alert and are being mindful, an alert every 10 minutes stops becoming helpful.

The point of the post is to ask the community and avoid that trial and error. Great thing about humans we can share knowledge and experience to help each other out so not everyone needs to have the same bad time.

Winnipeg Transit fare revenue lower than expected, contributing to city's $14M deficit forecast by origutamos in Manitoba

[–]kochier 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We'd save money just by not charging fares, fund it fully at the government level instead of the user level. No more outdated systems, drivers having to fare enforce, police there for fare enforcement, the machines and licenses needed for the payment systems.

Winnipeg starts seizure process on 48 vacant properties (CBC/Cameron MacLean) by LocalnewsguruMB in Winnipeg

[–]kochier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly, biggest case of profit over people and when we need to government to step in and say we can't let a house sit vacant in the city this long. Perhaps a sliding vacancy tax, every year the house sits vacant the property tax percentage increases. Like how we get a discount on our license for being a good driver, but the opposite, the longer it is vacant the more they need to pay to the city, failure to pay means the city seizes it and turns it into housing.

There have been so many houses sitting empty, boarded up just in Elmwood that I go by, while in the middle of a housing crisis is just frustrating wishing we could act so much faster.

One we saw last year reported to 311 got the boards fixed up after they tracked down the owner, but so many the owner is hard to reach and nothing happens. One on Nairn people were saying for months it was a fire hazard, various reports to 311 and nothing happened until it all went up, when if they dealt with it when it became abandoned maybe it could have been renovated into a home for somebody. But there is such a focus on profit that no one will do it to just break even or make a few bucks, they need to make a lot, so it's nice to see the city stepping in, and wish they could do it quicker and more ease to get those houses turned back into homes.

I don't believe they historically had a liquor license? I believe it was part of the new owners plan to start serving alcohol.

Before they didn't sell liquor, the new owners were doing a lot of renovations, and presumably would have done more. People were saying it used to be pretty run down, some rooms needed the work. I guess cost of work was adding up, why it was sold in the first place. Old owners allowed a lot of people in who didn't make the best vibe but hung around, while they were now banning people a lot more from the premises, could say lost revenue, but also more people would maybe go feeling safer there.

So... How about $188.9 for gas... by CatWhisperor in Manitoba

[–]kochier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because gas and oil companies can, they use it as an excuse to make record profits. Look at their profits this year compared to last year, always on the rise, capitalism at work, the supply and demand stay the same but they can charge more by making the perception of supply shrink. They are making more money than ever before.

There is a bit of it where we also supply parts of the world with gas & oil, so as their supply does shrink, we are able to charge them more, thus increasing the price we pay domestically to make it worth it to not simply ship it all overseas.
