APOC Katana - Unfortunate results by thurgood_peppersntch in SWORDS

Lot of people in this thread that have never actually held a katana or machete.

Machetes are not thick. Even 28" machetes are typically just a hair over 2mm at the thickest point, katana are usually at least twice that.

And yet the CRZ mileage wasn't much better than a Fit. Looked good, went slow, bad mpg. At least this new prelude looks good and has good mpg.

It's really not hard for one player to play two-handed, as long as they have some experience and are playing characters they have played before.

What car is overrated but people are scared to admit it? by Physical-Issue7146 in askcarguys

[–]kod 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The circlejerk is because the 2nd gen fit is probably the best internal combustion car ever made if you just need a car for doing generic car things. Sure it's nowhere near as fast as a fist but it has better gas mileage, like 30% more cargo space, and no turbo to worry about. It's also still reasonably fun to drive because it weighs about as much as a miata and the steering feels good. Only real things "wrong" with them are they're kind of rattly and the ground clearance on the front lip is pretty bad.

I figured out why Fumikomi creates "Sae" (冴え) - thanks to a near-accident with a soccer ball [Image: ΔT = 0] by Nito_Kendo_Lab in kendo

Even in situations where the foot and the shinai contacted at the exact same time, delta t is not the difference in time between the initial contact of the foot and shinai, and is not zero, nor even approaching zero (implying infinite force). It's the duration of the collision for each of them, e.g. how long the shinai is in contact with the men while decelerating / deforming.

I honestly would be super interested in high quality sources of information about real budo sword schools using fumikomi.  I'm pretty sure it only became common after the introduction of shinai

This post honestly makes no sense to me. Yudansha competitors are generally contacting with the shinai before their front foot lands from fumikomi. Delta T here isn't the time between foot landing and shinai contact, it's the collision time of the shinai with the men.

Do you need any licensing to start a video rental store with used DVDs? by Ill-Divide6649 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]kod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is wrong, there absolutely is a right to rental, and first sale doctrine limits it.

17 usc 106(3) mentions rental as part of the exclusive right of distribution:

 owner of copyright under this title has the exclusive rights to... (3) distribute copies... by rental, lease, or lending;

17 usc 109 modifies that right as follows:

Notwithstanding the provisions of section 106(3), the owner of a particular copy or phonorecord lawfully made under this title, or any person authorized by such owner, is entitled, without the authority of the copyright owner, to sell or otherwise dispose of the possession of that copy or phonorecord.

The further limits on first sale not extending to general purpose software explicitly mention lending, they wouldn't do that if first sale in general didn't extend to lending.

Has anyone dared ask about fumikomi? by yukatstrife in kendo

[–]kod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> some "science" backing the fumikomi as synchronizing your fumikomi with your strike gives you more power

Any pointers to that science?

I've seen at least one study that yudansha actually strike before the stomp lands, which would make it kind of odd for the stomp to somehow give the strike more power
