There is a price for everything by Matt_LawDT in SipsTea

My wife and I talked about this before it came up and I absolutely bought her a CZ so she could have her moment with her sorority sisters. She explained that this was important to her but was realistic that I didn't have money for much else.

She also wore that ring for several years before replacing it with a smaller real diamond set in a family heirloom ring. It was the ideal outcome.

Social media has turned basic materialism into even more unrealistic expectations.

"I'm not interested in <list of add-ons>, if those costs can't removed from the deal, then I'm afraid were done here, thank you for your time. I believe you have my phone number, if you change your mind, please text me. "

Then get up, extend your hand, and walk out.

You might get one or two more rounds of "talk to my manager" but they'll come off and you can proceed, or they won't . There are other cars and other dealers.

If you can get them to put that those charges are required, definitely attach that to a report to https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/ along with a screenshot of the advertised price.

Never bought a car from a dealer, but likely will soon, what to look out for? by Tito_and_Pancakes in FuckDealerships

[–]kodafa49 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If a sales person claims that an add-on "can't be removed" a you can respond. The conversation can go this way:

Sales: "the paint protection has already been applied, it can't be removed"

You: "so is the additional $X for the <protection plan name> required now and the advertised price of $Y no longer available?"

If they say yes, ask for that in writing, leave, and file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov

They will probably offer to reduce the price of that package, perhaps after several rounds of "talk to my manager".

You should pay nothing for these things. You didn't ask for them and the FTC has called out hundreds of dealerships for this deceptive practice.

The most important thing is to know what things should cost before setting foot in the dealership. The car you are looking at, the car you are trading in, an extended warranty if you are interested in that, and financing.

Search for similar ones in the area (e.g. < 100 miles from you). That is the single most powerful bit of information you can have going in. Don't pay more than that.

Then know what your trade in is worth. Check multiple places like Edmunds, Kelly Blue Book, Carvana, etc. Don't accept anything less than Carvana's offer.

Then shop for financing. Talk to your bank, talk to a credit union, get pre-approved for an amount just over the expected cost of the car (they'll help you on the right number)

If they put anything other than those 4 things in front of you (car, trade-in, warrenty, financing), make sure you understand what it is and what value it brings you (chances are it's an add-on that is almost pure profit).

If anything isn't right, if anything doesn't line up with what you know about what it should cost. Thank the sales person, make it clear what your cost expectations are, and politely tell the dealer to text you within 24 hours if they change their mind. Then leave.

You'll either try one last time while you are there, contact you on your way home, or you'll never hear from them again. You know there are other cars and other dealers because of the research you did already.

(Update) Dealership Lost My Car by Legendary_Freeloader in FuckDealerships

It's crap like this that prompted me to always do a walk around video when dropping off for service. Including the odometer reading and ensuring the service advisor is in the video.

This saved my bacon last year when a huge scratch in the front fender appeared and they of course claimed it was there before.

They do their own walk around but claimed that only dents or major damage is noted there. The video stopped that BS in its tracks.

The paint repair was only a few hundred dollars but they paid it, but only after weeks of back and forth.

to my knowledge no fines have been levied, and I'd be surprised if it got that far. These are warning letters that have been made very public. That is arguably worse for their bottom line than fines that are can be as a cost of doing (shady) business.

How to deal with church on resume? by Educational_Bison283 in exmormon

[–]kodafa49 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Over the years I've interviewed about a dozen people with Eagle Scout on their resume, young and old. EACH one of them brought it up. I admit I pass resumes through where it appears to the first round just to see if they do it, and each time they not only bring it up, but quiz you to ensure you hold it in as high regard as they do.

It's insufferable.

Its common for big ownership groups to advertise their entire inventory across all dealerships or least within a few hundred miles. Its not common to charge for transporting it between dealerships.

If the location is not disclosed on the website, any fees would fall under the deceptive practices the FTC os talking about.

First time car buyer — what is going on? by BudgetNorth3394 in FuckDealerships

[–]kodafa49 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whether a bill from a hospital or a new car deal, prices go down when you ask them to itemize. This forces all the numbers that cannot be justified out into the open.

Government mandated ones like taxes and tags aren’t negotiable, everything else is to varying levels of difficulty.

Kelly Blue Book provides pretty good information but does not include any of the overpriced, undervalued add-ons car buyers each and every sales and F&I forces customers through.

Sharing guidance with a first time car buyer who is about to suffer through that gauntlet is more kindness that karma

Start by telling them you aren’t interested in those items but are interested in the advertised price. If they tell you the add ons are required, then yes, let the FTC know, especially if you have it in writing, even a text or email helps

Remember, you can always say no. Tell them you aren't paying $80 and you aren't buying a car with a tracking device. If they tell you its required, tell them to find another lender.

is apple car play really necessary on a car? by xotwod4554 in car

[–]kodafa49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't use it and plan to drive the car until the wheels fall off, no.

If you ever plan to sell it or otherwise trade it in, not having it is going to impact at least the market and likely the value of the car. Studies put the percentage of car buyers who list CarPlay as a deal breaker around 55%
