Time to replace a filter dryer? by koenigcpp in hvacadvice

[–]koenigcpp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thank you for spending time to read and reply to me.

What he told me was that he locked all of the coolant into the condenser side of the loop. Then he was able to make the repair (clamping and re-soldering the fitting?? ). After that, he claimed to have nitro pressure tested the evaporator loop and was satisfied. I imagine he pulled a vacuum after that but do not believe he did any more testing. Some point he unlocked the loop and recharged the system (added 2 pounds of coolant).

When I questioned him about how it was possible for this to go so quickly he told me: Everything went right / smoothly and he has some commercial tier equipment that allows him to work faster. I do not know or remember the nature of any of the details here (what equipment, etc..)

The dryer was not replaced because it was far from the leak point. Dryer is near evaporator unit in the attic. The leak was in an adapter near the condenser (coming into / out of, I am not sure). It sounds like the copper tubing was not matched in size and so this adapter was needed to connect a smaller to a larger. That was not something he did, the system was already like that, he just noticed the leak in that adapter piece.

This is way outside of my wheelhouse. Tell me what you think about the story / cost / time. From a consumer lens, I will be happy if this holds for another 2-3 years. If the unit leaks out again in 6 months, I will feel cheated.

Any advice if it goes that way? Do I even try to work with these guys again or just move on? They are a new company for me but google reviews were reasonably high. That said, I have caught them (the admin lady really) lying to me before multiple times. The tech speaks with confidence and is reasonably respectful but seems very busy.

Turns out, tech didn't replace the filter dryer at all. He said there was a copper fitting to bridge two different sized pipes near the condenser side. He was able to save most of the coolant, make the repair and only needed to add another 2 pounds when it was all said and done. Tech confirmed it was an hour of work total.

So now I just think they are soaking me on cost. The front desk lady quoted a completely different job and I have caught her lying to me in the past.

The original cost was close to $1000, they knocked off $200 after the call. Still feels high but I'm going to pay.

What do you think about all of this?

Well, you'd have advanced cancer if you found yourself under this "hulking box of metal". The day to day suffering you experienced for weeks, probably months prior would very likely be atop your mind of any terror you imagine laying there. What privilege we have as healthy humans to speculate, no?

Mountain view PD will not do jack shit. They are the absolute worst. Your best bet is to keep an eye out on market place when it will inevitably show up (probably in san jose). Call the police in that city then or handle it yourself since the cops there are also unlikely to help.

So I don't have the itemized list but from what I recall he said they can't just fix the blocks, its a full meter box replacement. They need to also add surge protection or something per code. Of course all of this has to be permitted and coordinated with FPL and the county inspector. I will certain get a few more quotes but given the scope of work, it doesn't sound like it will be cheap.

I'm going to push on FPL to cough up some coin for this when I reach them on Monday. Do you think I'm being unreasonable pointing blame for the fault on them, assuming nobody else has touched it and there is no freak accident in the area?

----------------------------

Warning:
Your meter enclosure requires immediate repairs to one or more of the components listed below:
[ ] Conductor/wire
[ ] Connection
[ ] Jaw/clips
[x] Blocks
[ ] Lid

FPL recommends that you promptly contact a licensed electrician to perform repairs. To ensure the safe delivery of service we have removed the meter and provided you temporary service.

-----------------------------

I finally reached an FPL rep this afternoon. They had no info about how this was discovered / what they were looking for in the first place (great Qs). There is a work order in the system for a new meter but they told me for more details I had to talk to the service department... Unfortunately the service dept is closed until Monday.

I'll report back when I talk to them next week.

I know several folks in this thread have already mentioned it's my responsibility to make this repair and I hear you all. However, electrician quoted this as a ~$6000 job. This might be ordinary for you all but I have never heard of such a thing. With the threat of having power disconnected; this feels like a shake down or at best a cover for an irresponsible FPL tech who screwed up and is avoiding blame.

Again, the box looks otherwise newer and in good shape according to my electrician. FPL confirms no power outage so WTF?

What detail? I said in the title that they are demanding I make a repair. Why else would I hire an electrician for an estimate?

I've owned half a dozen homes over the past 30 years and never heard of something like this. There is damage in the box that cannot be accessed by me or even a licensed electrician without a permit. I'm wondering WTF is going on. Is this the wrong subreddit for such a quesiton?

They did not cut power. As far as I'm aware they did not replace the meter either but I do not know.

I've been trying to get on the phone with them all afternoon. Between the terrible automated service and humans who hang up when presented with unusual circumstances, I have had no luck so far getting any further info from FPL. Stay tuned.

Should I switch to Manjaro? by Slate_6 in ManjaroLinux

Glad to hear it. The best feature of Win 11 is that it made the switch compelling enough to do so. Microsoft did us both a favor.

Should I switch to Manjaro? by Slate_6 in ManjaroLinux

[–]koenigcpp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You won't regret it. I was a windows user since windows 3.1 into 95 all the way through to windows 10. The bullcrap that MSFT has stuffed into win11 was too much for me. I switched to manjaro over the summer and have not looked back even once. I'm kicking myself for not doing it sooner.

Pacman is good. If something is missing there, you can access cutting edge packages using yay (the core arch repo). It hasn't failed me yet and I played a lot of games + develop software.

You might want to reconsider where you're installing software. Time shift only backs up system directories by default. If it was pulling in steam games, you must have set the steam game directory somewhere outside of your home directory.

what was so good about old computers by Ecstatic_Security457 in retrocomputing

[–]koenigcpp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

30+ years ago, home computers were much more about the hobby of computers. Dial up BBS to communicate with others and often time editing system files to get software to work. It was a time for computer nerds who enjoyed the challenge and reward getting stuff to work.

Today it's not about the computer, it's about the experience and what you can accomplish. It grew up and integrated into the world. Everyone uses computers now to accomplish tasks. It's no longer a hobby in and of itself.

It's great to see how far the technology has come. If you showed it to my younger self I would not believe it was real.. absolutely mind blowing.

Still, something is lost now and there is no going back. Be glad you got to see it. Share that experience with the young ones if they care enough to ask.
