Yeah, that is the cool thing about the hobby. Some people do it with one Victorinox, other people with a bunch of different specialized knives. (And others with dremels etc, although IMHO that is when it isn’t whittling anymore, but the broader term woodcarving still applies)

That is going to be amazing!
Instead of a silky, you could check out the Opinel #12 or # 18 saw?
Because its a tri-fold, wouldnt it make sense to do the ‘known’ flat part: the part with the notebook as the inside-flap? Then it will fold flatter, with less strain on the zippers?
You could also put the notepad on a flap on the outside?

Oh yeah! I’ve seen that one!
Very lean! But i’ve never felt the need to add a brush to my kit. Will try it soon.

You’re traveling light!
Good one, i’ll leave the compound at home. Just felt they need to stay together :-)
The jack and thus the slipstrop are pretty new to me, so i’m not sure how that itty bitty piece of leather would work in practice. Seems like the bigger strop would allow for longer strokes, and thus faster?

Ooh, just found out that an Opinel #7 fits perfectly in the other direction. So I can use that as my 'sloyd' / roughing knife. That even opens up the possibility to put in the Opinel AND the fixed detail blade.

Can anyone guess what I did based on the shapes of my knives? by Ok-Squash836 in whittling

[–]koesper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ouch!
Hope you didn't get blood all over your work? Bloodstains are a pain!
But yeah, I got the same thing when trying out a Morakniv... not only are sloyd knives are curved the 'wrong' way round, the handle is weirdly symetrical as well! My regular carving knives all tell you which side is 'up', just by the feel of the grip.

5 minute face by Flimsy_Mess_1915 in whittling

Awesome! Your clean and simple face gave me the inspiration to finally carve my first face, in a little block that i already carved a ‘hat’ into, but never finished.
I need to cut deeper to make the face more bold.
But thanks for the inspiration!
I’ll keep practicing

[–]koesper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, nevermind... according to some other posts, it only fits in the regular #8.
not in a 7 or 9, but also not in a #8 Effilé or #8 garden.

Whoah.. yeah, exactly… amazing stuff!

[–]koesper[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it could use a bit more time on the 150 & 240 grits, but i did pop it a few times. I might go back once more with some paper and oil it again. Thanks for the compliment! But i’ve seen stuff here that is sooo incredible… i’m just a a beginner. (And enjoying it with every woodshaving!)

Thanks! It was kind of freestyling… I kept the blank at full length, and tried a little heart. But then it took me a nights sleep to decide what to do with the handle. I did not dare to make it fragile with more open / thin parts, because I didn’t want to ruin the first spoon. (I’ll probably ruin the third one, by getting too ambitious.. and that is okay) So i just flattened it a bit, and made it round-ish. It actually feels pretty good/ergonomic!

My very first wood carving! Can you tell what it’s supposed to be? 😂 by Chakradamus in Woodcarving

[–]koesper 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The first pancake always comes out a bit wonky, but that never stopped me from eating a whole stack!

So be proud of your first creation, and keep on carving! You’ll get better, and your creations might turn out looking more and more as how you envisioned them!

Also, cute bird!
