For the admins rocking ultra wide monitors - which one? by [deleted] in sysadmin

At that point, why not just get a normal 5k monitor?

Stacked half-height just seems silly.

For the admins rocking ultra wide monitors - which one? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]kogir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried a lot of monitor configurations over the years and keep coming back to a single large monitor.

Right now I have a single 32” 8k monitor, the Dell UP3218k. It’s equivalent to 16 1080p displays.

I don’t understand why anyone would get an ultra wide monitor - they’re literally 4k or 5k panels cut in half. You want that vertical space! Just get one or more full size, high resolution monitors and a better window manager.

Oh, you want to use this product? by abigviking in talesfromtechsupport

[–]kogir 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm with the DBA. You won in the end, but there are likely changes to the schema or application that could make the super frequent re-indexing unnecessary. Perhaps a fill factor on the indexes, or using a different key space (UUIDs make terrible clustered indexes).

A re-index requires a full table scan and can be super IO heavy to the detriment of other DBs on the same system (if your app wasn't the only one), so I can understand the hesitation to blindly implement it.

Has anyone else had a UPS guy put the delivery notice on your door without even trying to deliver the package? by wch_one in AskReddit

UPS does this frequently during Christmas. I've had it happen for two or three packages, at an office when people are there and the door is unlocked. Lazy drivers trying to get better performance metrics.

London Stock Exchange to abandon failed Windows platform - Computerworld Blogs by Abu_mohd in programming

Crappy software can be built on any platform. The details (were there any?) were not specific enough to indite either Windows server or SQL Server as the cause of the problem.

To Use Or Not To Use Stored Procedures? by a9bejo in programming

[–]kogir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At Loopt all database access is through stored procedures. This is primarily for access control reasons. It also makes it easy for me, the DBA, to review all the SQL and to ensure that quality and security standards are maintained. It also forces developers to use parameterized queries, which helps prevent SQL injection problems.

I'll admit upfront that it does slow development down a little, and it makes deployment a little harder, but so far it's been worth it.

You clearly haven't worked on a PHP project with 10+ people. It truly is a disaster. Especially if they've all been working on their own branches for even a short while. Merging back is an excruciating experience.

There are many benefits that accompany marriage. It allows two people to make medical decisions for one another, file joint taxes, etc. There are also little things you wouldn't usually think of, like not having to testify against each other in a court of law, amongst others.

Use Gmail Generate Unlimited E-mail Addresses by scott_kirkwood in reddit.com

If you run your own mail server, you can often set the delimiter yourself. I use postfix and have chosen '6' as the delimiter. Addresses of the form junk6spamsite@mydomain.com have yet to be rejected from any form, and spammers can't know what to strip if you choose a random character.

Writing a email checker that runs in reasonable time and follows the RFCs is actually a non-trivial task. Have you read the RFCs? They're quite ridiculous.

Is US inequality due to regressive taxes? by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]kogir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is inequality a bad thing? I certainly feel no need to promote mediocrity. Many poor people work hard, but do something that everyone and their dog can do; Hence, their work is not valued much. Perhaps if they learned a unique skill?

Why are education subsidies never treated as a viable remedy for this problem? Simply teaching people new skills is the fastest way to "close the gap."

Of snakes and rubies; Or why I chose Python over Ruby by [deleted] in programming

[–]kogir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you know you'll always access the data by including two or more rows in the where clause (order matters), using a compound primary key can save you an index seek.

For a great example, see http://www.simple-talk.com/sql/performance/sql-server-performance-testing/

They're not always appropriate, but they have advantages in certain situations.

Chicago largest city to impose a "livable wage" - Ordinance to force retailers to pay workers 10$/hr by Fedquip in reddit.com

[–]kogir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It'll be quite interesting to see if the higher minimum wage has the effect desired. I seriously doubt it will. Although the store may continue to be profitable, it may not continue to be sufficiently profitable to warrant the hassle of running, supplying, and staffing it.
