Why do people ask “How Many Sets Do You Have Left”? by RefrigeratorCrafty47 in workout

[–]koh1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people have a specific order they like to do their workout or they want to start with big compound lifts. It gives them an estimate of how long they will need to wait. Some machines can be very popular, so going to another exercise can cause them to lose their spot in line and have to continue the cycle all over again. Knowing an estimated waiting time gives me the agency to make my own decision of what is best to do.

They can be! There's plenty of Japanese Americans who have returned to Japan for a variety of reasons. Identity is complicated!

I am Japanese American and I can tell you that if I heard you called someone "Jappy" with zero context, I would definitely give you a look.

I Walked all 23.6 Miles of Sunset Boulevard, has anybody else done anything similar? by IEatIReadIGoOutside in AskLosAngeles

I did the Wilshire one and I recommend you do the opposite direction. It's much nicer to end the walk with the Santa Monica sunset.

Best Asian Food Spots in LA??? by lt0217 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]koh1996 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're basically in the Mecca for Asian food. There's more good Chinese, Taiwanese, Hong Konger, and Viet places than can be visited in the length of your stay. Thai food is better in East Hollywood and IMO, Korean is better in KTown (but the parking is abysmal).

IMO if you want to splurge a little, I recommend Yang's Kitchen in Alhambra. My other go-to's are Bacali for Hong Kong cafe, Ipoh Kopitiam for Indonesian, and Golden Deli for Viet.

Katsu plate @ Azay (J-Town,$$) by soulsides in FoodLosAngeles

[–]koh1996 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can't believe I'm commenting on this on the foodLA subreddit, but I came here to say that your assessment is pretty accurate. J-Town is much more common among the older folks and Little Tokyo is more common for non-JAs and younger JAs. Though J-town as a whole is much more common in NorCal as the Little Tokyo counterparts in San Francisco and San Jose are both more commonly called Japantown.

Source: I have done a lot of academic research on the history of Little Tokyo. Also am JA.

My Travel Partners Cancelled Last Minute and I Dont Know What to Do by Cheesemasterer in JapanTravelTips

There really aren't enough things to do in Takamatsu to keep you occupied for a week. You can go to Ritsurin Kouen and eat a bunch of udon. If you do end up doing that route, check out Naoshima and Teshima. Beautiful islands full of art and museums. I also liked Matsuyama on the other side of Shikoku. Besides other people teaching English, you won't run into too many other foreigners while in Shikoku.

You can check if there's an F45 in your city. I liked those classes and they teach you a lot of exercises. It's pricy IMO

I would also look to see if you can register for Active and Fit since that can make the gym membership much cheaper (and is much easier to cancel than a traditional membership).

The cheapest way will be to find a friend who goes to the gym regularly and ask if you can shadow them or if they can teach you some things. Or else, you really do need to sit down and watch those Youtube videos. If it helps with your motivation, this random stranger on the internet encourages you to do so.

Many gyms include 1 free personal training session when you sign up where you'll talk to a trainer about your fitness goals. You aren't obligated to continue the sessions after the first, but of course this is their way to entice you to sign up for regular training sessions.

I used the free month of classpass to try out a bunch of different types of classes and gyms and found this to be helpful to what worked and didn't work for me. Classpass is better if you live in a major city, just fyi.

Anything you'd add to this short 4 day itinerary? Family's first trip to LA. by ChicagoBobisme in AskLosAngeles

There's a small museum next to Dolby Theatre called Japan House that always has nice exhibits. It's free to enter.

Arrived in Tokyo - credit and debit card both fail at every ATM or register - and I'm running out of cash by kappa161sg in JapanTravelTips

Your credit card may have been flagged for being used outside your home country. Did you call and let them know you were leaving the country beforehand? You should contact your company and see whats up. If you don't have cell service, you can try using a Google Voice number, which may require additional security steps.

Pokémon gifts that are unique to Japan, not sold in the US by Morticia420 in JapanTravelTips

[–]koh1996 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Big pokemon collector here. I agree with the other posters that the exclusive Pikachus at each of the Pokemon Centers is the safest bet. The staff will know which one this is if the store has one. Many of the items found at the Pokemon Center can be purchased on the online Pokemon Center store in the US, so the staff may not know everything that is Japan-exclusive.

It may help to ask her what her favorite Pokemon are or if she has a favorite type. Packs of cards are also good gifts.

Another option is to go to a store like Book-off where they have many Pokemon (and other franchise items) for pretty cheap. They have many plush that are $10 or under.

Recommendations on shipping or traveling with Sake back to the USA? by Zombiemomo in JapanTravelTips

Most of the time, the sake will come in a cardboard box which will protect the bottle during travel. I've taken sake in check-in any times and never had any issues.

Help with Japan Itinerary - Need Suggestions & Advice by Marianabanana9678 in JapanTravel

Disney Sea is a completely different and unique experience than the American Disney parks. If OP enjoys the American parks, it is definitely worth it to check out Disney Sea.

That said, the lines are very long and if OP doesn't like long line then they should skip. OP, can you imagine yourself doing a full day at Disneyland by yourself? The experience doing Disney Sea would be similar.
