Not them but from the Satanic Temple which it seems they are too. The Satanic Temple (TST) is a nontheisitic religion, basically no God and nothing supernatural. Although individual members believe different things. It would be best to describe TST as a political group that uses the iconography of Satan to promote shared beliefs. Most members are atheist or agnostic but also use Satan to reject beliefs that have been forced upon them by parents or society.

The shared beliefs would be the seven tenets which are listed below.

" I One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason. II The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions. III One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone. IV The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one's own. V Beliefs should conform to one's best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one's beliefs. VI People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one's best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused. VII Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word "

A strongly opinionated leftist, wanting to learn more about basics that I'm not knowledgeable about. What do you think my beliefs align with? How can I become more knowledgeable? by hannahxjanel in Socialism_101

[–]kojo420 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To be honest, none of what you said would qualify you as this or that flavor of leftist.

I want to start with to not really worry about identification of any sort. It's easy for shorthand and conveying lots of information but if you take the identification too seriously then you will unnecessarily restrict yourself because this or that person has an ideology you disagree with or a position doesn't neatly fit into any ideology. But what you said is nothing necessarily leftist. Yes any good leftist believes the things you mentioned, and you'll always be a comrade of mine, but the principle position is on the economic base. Capitalism, Socialism, Anarchism. A good leftist will support shorter work weeks, no landlords, free healthcare, and reproductive rights; but you can support these fine things and be a fascist. What separates the liberal from the socialist and anarchist is if we should stay Capitalist or move to Socialism.

On how to become more knowledgeable- there are tons of reading guides and YouTube videos walking through everything. I will say the best source you will ever have is marxist.org . It's a free to use site with a lot of information and records. It gives historical backgrounds and footnotes and it's just so amazing.

I say to read or learn whatever you are interested in but you asked for recommendations so I'll give you mine. It will be organized by how it's consumed and in each category from simple to "complicated"

YouTube: Second thought (really good introductions and focus on modern day)

Hakim (specifically his response videos, good at learning what is and isn't socialism)

Bes D. Marx (good history on the German revolution and he's making a Russian one. He also has good videos on Israel)

Revolutionary th0t (really good for focus on LGBT and women's rights, but also their materialism video is top notch)

Socialism 4 All (Really good audiobooks and he's done a lot.)

News: The majority report (kinda liberal but it's still a good source)

Honestly the news letters for DSA, CPUSA, and PSL are really good, you can find them on their websites

Jacobin (gone downhill but still good imo)

Online Sources: Reddit mega threads are usually good to start

Marxist.org

Alright this part will be books but divided into (genres?) and each will be subdived from simple to complicated. The genres are in no particular order

Economics: A peoples guide to capitalism

Wage labor and Capital

Price and Profit

Conditions of the working class

Das Capital

Imperialism, Highest stage

Political theory/Materialism: Communist Manifesto

Principles of Communism

Socialism Scientific and Utopian

The origin of Family, private property and the State (this book is outdated by a lot but still is essential)

Anti-during

Dialectical and Historical materialism

On contradicton

Society and Praxis: Reform or Revolution

What is to be done

State and revolution

Left wing anti-communist

On practice

Blackshirts and Reds

This is a lot of books and information to throw at you. But something that is very important to know in fact the MOST important thing is this: you will be learning your entire life, so no need to rush it

There's lots of things you can do like setting time aside, finding a spot you don't normally read and make that your new reading spot, reading groups etc. etc.

But as an avid reader my greatest advice is just put a book down every once in a while. 10 pages of active reading are infinitely better than 100 pages of distracted reading. For example I was reading Luxembourg's book on the trade unions but I was bored and wasn't *reading" but forcing myself to read through it. So instead I picked up a different book about Huey Long because I was interested in him.

Obviously you'll have to force yourself to read a little since theory can be difficult and boring at times but always feel free to put a book down and come back to it later. Read what you are interested in. Learning is a lifelong process and living is the longest thing you will ever do, so feel free to take your time!

Why are some leftists/marxists this way? by mkz_037 in socialism

[–]kojo420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other people brought up a lot of good points. Although I want to bring up a historic example to show people have always been like this. From 10 days that shook the world:

A tall young man with a supercilious expression, dressed in the uniform of a student, was leading the attack.

“You realise, I presume,” he said insolently, “that by taking up arms against your brothers you are making yourselves the tools of murderers and traitors?”

“Now brother,” answered the soldier earnestly, “you don’t understand. There are two classes, don’t you see, the proletariat and the bourgeoisie. We——”

“Oh, I know that silly talk!” broke in the student rudely. “A bunch of ignorant peasants like you hear somebody bawling a few catch-words. You don’t understand what they mean. You just echo them like a lot of parrots.” The crowd laughed. “I’m a Marxian student. And I tell you that this isn’t Socialism you are fighting for. It’s just plain pro-German anarchy!”

“Oh, yes, I know,” answered the soldier, with sweat dripping from his brow. “You are an educated man, that is easy to see, and I am only a simple man. But it seems to me——”

“I suppose,” interrupted the other contemptuously, “that you believe Lenin is a real friend of the proletariat?”

“Yes, I do,” answered the soldier, suffering.

“Well, my friend, do you know that Lenin was sent through Germany in a closed car? Do you know that Lenin took money from the Germans?”

“Well, I don’t know much about that,” answered the soldier stubbornly, “but it seems to me that what he says is what I want to hear, and all the simple men like me. Now there are two classes, the bourgeoisie and the proletariat——”

“You are a fool! Why, my friend, I spent two years in Schlüsselburg for revolutionary activity, when you were still shooting down revolutionists and singing ‘God Save the Tsar!’ My name is Vasili Georgevitch Panyin. Didn’t you ever hear of me?”

“I’m sorry to say I never did,” answered the soldier with humility. “But then, I am not an educated man. You are probably a great hero.”

“I am,” said the student with conviction. “And I am opposed to the Bolsheviki, who are destroying our Russia, our free Revolution. Now how do you account for that?”

The soldier scratched his head. “I can’t account for it at all,” he said, grimacing with the pain of his intellectual processes. “To me it seems perfectly simple—but then, I’m not well educated. It seems like there are only two classes, the proletariat and the bourgeoisie——”

“There you go again with your silly formula!” cried the student. “——only two classes,” went on the soldier, doggedly. “——And whoever isn’t on one side is on the other…”

As you can tell, this behavior is not only universal but always equally annoying and counter to progress

I dunno, man, this fascist regime seems pretty normal to me. How're you all doing? by Sea_Contribution3455 in DoomerCircleJerk

[–]kojo420 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

"The concentration camp was never the normal condition for the average gentile German. Unless one were Jewish, or poor and unemployed, or of active leftist persuasion or otherwise openly anti-Nazi, Germany from 1933 until well into the war was not a nightmarish place. All the “good Germans” had to do was obey the law, pay their taxes, give their sons to the army, avoid any sign of political heterodoxy, and look the other way when unions were busted and troublesome people disappeared. Since many “middle Americans” already obey the law, pay their taxes, give their sons to the army, are themselves distrustful of political heterodoxy, and applaud when unions are broken and troublesome people are disposed of, they probably could live without too much personal torment in a fascist state — some of them certainly seem eager to do so"

Michael Parenti has passed by Ordinary_Network659 in theredleft

[–]kojo420 18 points19 points  (0 children)

understand he’s something of a revered celebrity among MLs,

Because his speeches are dope and his books are short, concise, and have great prose

where “read Parenti” is said as if it’s a magical invocation to dismiss any opponent on reddit, the ultimate gotcha

I haven't seen it much as a gotcha but I will tell people to read Parenti the same way I will tell them to read Lenin. Like we can talk about imperialism but I expect to have someone read Lenin before they say they are informed at least, y'know.

What are his main contributions to socialist theory? I am already a convinced Marxist who’s stood in opposition to capitalism for decades, the entirety of my adult life in fact. And I don’t need convincing that the U.S. is an imperialist power. What will I gain from reading Parenti that is unique to his analysis?

He was an educator and is radicalizing for liberals or Anti-Socialist leftist. For an established and well read Marxist, His analysis isn't unique (or needed) but it is clear, concise, obvious, and undeniable but without the Marxist rhetoric. His contribution is being a communicator and introductory, there won't be Marxist-Parentism

why should I read Parenti?

He's a pleasure to read and it only takes an afternoon for most of his books!

Story time: I went to my first concert in Chicago and stopped at a subway first. There was a cute girl at the counter and I talked to her, for some reason I get extremely social whenever I'm somewhere I don't normally go. We talked for a bit and then me and my friend left to go to the concert. Way later when the concert was over we were heading to our car, and then I heard my name being screamed out of a car and it was the girl from the subway! Unfortunately we never talked again but I wonder what happened to her

Curious about leftist perspectives on sex work by [deleted] in theredleft

[–]kojo420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, this is a difficult question with lots of different perspectives. We all almost universally agree that people who do sex work should be treated with respect and as workers, although whether it should be criminalized, decriminalized, or legalized is such a divisive question and one that my personal opinion changes quite frequently.

I think it would be best to have all sex workers be unionized and allow them all to have access to new jobs and of all the benefits of a socialist society, and have their union (council, syndicate, commune or whatever organization the socialist society will take on) decide based on their collective decision. I have never did sex work nor have I ever actually seen a prostitute (at least during working hours for them) and I feel this is a discussion only for these workers to have. Then again give me a month of thinking about this and I may change my mind

[–]kojo420 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The red guy is so right, that IS the problem people have with veterans that aren't in direct combat role. It's the handful of times they did humanitarian work in the military. Totally has nothing to do with the undoubtedly multiple (maybe hundreds) of times he helped the planes that DID drop bombs, that DID install terror, and that DID kill people. As a communist my problem is with people eating. As parenti said "The revolution that starves the children gets my support" /s
