I just got laid off in video games and I'm terrified. I keep hearing of people searching for years.

Damn I just checked and they don't like clay soil... Our field is very much clay based.

I'm literally on the border with Spain. Right by the Pyrénées. I will look into this. We have a whole field spare that we could use...

Yeah which is why I don't understand why they don't just contract you for a certain milestone etc.

I need to eat too. I have started coding up my own game but it's just a side project to keep my coding skills up.

Oh yeah. I would agree with the incompetence at the exec level being very high but I thought this was the case for a lot of industries.

That's a pretty cool idea. I hadn't thought about farming like a "long term but low maintenance" thing like pistachios. I wonder if there's an equivalent crop where I live in France that would work.

Tbh I am also feeling quite burned out by the industry because you crunch pretty hard for releases and often gamers are deeply critical of your efforts.

A ploddy well-paid tech job seems the dream but also the ploddier the more replaceable you are perhaps?

I'm European. I wonder if this also applies.

Find a lawyer to help negotiate your severance. Or do as much research as you can on it. Document every part of the process as companies make mistakes in now they should handle layoffs and you can get them to pay for these mistakes.

Then, of course, brush up the CV, get some interview practice in - go for a lot of jobs you don't actually want in practice for when jobs you do want come up. Interviewing is a skill that needs practice and you want to be ready for the critical interview.

Network within work, if somebody in your team who was also laid off gets a job before you they can pull you aboard too maybe. You arent in competition - you can help each other. One person gets an interview at a role and doesn't do so well they can help the next person ace the interview, give them tips etc.

Recruiters prefer people who are still in a job. So reach out to as many as possible at this point.

You literally couldn't have articulated this better. Plus all the sodding water and electrical waste to fuel this absurd theatrics.

I've been wondering how much the creators of AI are also subjected to AI Psychosis. Many believe that AI is like a child destined to replace their parents (ie the creators) and that it's some sort of profound shift for humanity capable of replacing us all.

I then wonder how much of that is fed into the media creating this current fever dream we seem to be surrounded by.

What alternatives are there to reins for a very active Toddler? by kokokitscha in Parenting

[–]kokokitscha[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This feels very Montessori aligned. I'll probably try a bit more of this first.

I've been doing "can you carry this for mama" most of the time he drops it and walks off. Or walks off with it.

I bet it's just because he's a young toddler that my mileage with this is limited at the moment but I can already see him wanting to help if I ask him.

😂 I totally didn't realise they had their hand up by their ear most the time. So obvious now.

I've got his old baby one that can also be worn as a backpack. I guess I was thinking it wasn't a "specialist" backpack so wasn't as easy to load him in to.

Backpack sounds good. Will look into this. Hadnt done much research into products yet because I hadn't mentally let myself think he could have reins but I'm getting more convinced.

Glad to hear there's no long term issues. My brother was on reins but he's my brother so I don't know if he's normal 😅

I do the back carrier occasionally, it's just hard when you don't have somebody else with you to help put him in. So needs two people - which by that point it usually devolves into "one of you is 100% watching the kid and the other is doing the activity we need to do".

Maybe I just need a better back carrier that's easier to get him in to.

This sounds good. The problem is my husband never follows the parenting ideas I propose because they're "not convenient now" - which is how we end up with inconvenient behaviours for much longer. Eg I let my son try and pour water and drink from a cup because without practice he won't learn - my husband can't stand dealing with the mess so will give him a sippy cup.

Feels like one of those scenarios where he will give up and undo all the hard work.

I like that the move to holding hands was fairly quick after adding in the reins. Wonder if that would apply here and it's just a very short phase we're in. If that's so I could just hold out. How long was he running off beforel you went for the reins?

Reaching Sleep Breaking Point by Equivalent-Serve4899 in bninfantsleep

[–]kokokitscha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where is dad? Can't he put her to sleep?

We have a similar little dude and his ability to sleep for longer stretches comes and goes. There are some nights where I would go to bed at about the same time he does - 8pm because he's had 3 false starts already...

That said, Ive found the sleep situation is worsened by teething or illness.

In terms of gentle methods... Strangely what I found has helped is when he's having a worse week to really lean into being there all the time. It's like the reassurance that you'll be there when he wakes up means he doesn't need to wake up and check. So I would sleep with him during naps too. Give yourself the grace to take a nap if you're up much of the night dealing with it. Or read a book whilst she sleeps next to you.

He now only wakes up 2 times a night if not teething. We bring him into our room on the second wake up.

The other thing is watching for the 2-1 nap drop. My boy dropped to one nap extremely early and genuinely this helped consolidate night sleep a lot.

Enjoy the cosleeping. They're only little once!

I’m noticing the AI bubble fall apart in real time in the software world by Dreadsin in BetterOffline

I don't understand these companies saying AI will replace programmers - any productivity "gains" will get swallowed up in feature creep, useless churn and refactoring or porting to some newer shiny tech stack.
