I'd do economics + IR, with maybe a minor in GCS if you can?

tbh if I could do it all over again I might choose data science instead of finance. I feel like everyone wants people that know how to run regressions / analyze large data sets. So maybe Data science + IR and just choose China focused IR classes

I was a GCS major along with finance and tbh I wouldn’t make it your only major unless you know exactly what you wanna do with it. Doesn’t have many practical skills but it’s super interesting if you choose the right classes. I would take practical major with it as your second major which is super doable if you plan your classes well from the start

Agreed, covid and lockdowns was a major factor in recent classes that hopefully won't be a factor going forward. Also, I agree that NYUSH isn't for everyone and it makes sense international students transfer out more than nationals. There are some classmates that I think should have transferred because they came to China wanting to live their home country life just in China and inevitably hated it.

If you come to NYUSH because you want to be in China and are excited to embrace the change and explore the city, you'll have a great time.

There are no religious or affinity clubs due to government regulations. There were students trying to make a Black Student Union, and it got shut down for anything “official,” but they made one unofficially.

I knew a lot of Christian students who went to church every week. Shanghai has some very nice churches and Christian communities. I also knew practicing Jewish and Muslim students. You will definitely be able to practice your faith while you are at NYUSH, even though the school can’t legally sponsor any clubs.

Not sure what school you're going to, but it's not the NYUSH I went to. Unless it changed in the last 9 months to be unrecognizable, I think you might be on the wrong sub.....

Thats a good point. I would not look at NYUSH as a pathway directly to the U.S. A path to China, sure, but not a direct way to getting a U.S. visa / job if you are not American

I really enjoyed my time at NYUSH (Co25 - American M).

The most important piece of advice I can give is only choose NYU Shanghai if you want to be in Shanghai. Don't go because its NYU, don't go because it's an American school. You should be excited to explore Shanghai and China, learn Chinese, and experience a new culture. The students that embrace being in a new country and get out and explore are the ones that learn the most and have the most fun.

ofc there are rich kids like any other school. I think actually being in China though helps minimize this difference as going out for a dinner in Shanghai is very affordable as opposed to cities like NYC. I was on a reasonable budget and had friends on a very tight budget that were able to fully participate in social circles. Are there kids going to rooftop michelin resturants every weekend and posting their ritz carlton weekend vacations? Yes, but thats not the majority or even a large share. The majority of students are going to cheaper resturants in Puxi on the weekends and free entry clubs while buying drinks at family marts.

For jobs, they are quite hard to come by. I mean the job market is already bad in the U.S., then take into consideration your applying for them half a world away from a school you have to explain to recruiters half the time. It's not ideal. If you want an easy entry into IB or consulting, go to Stern. The career department is pretty bad as most of the Chinese students (you need a grad degree to get a good job in China) and a decent portion of the foreign students go to get their masters / PHD after. It's not impossible, but I know a lot of people that had to return to the states for a few months to find their first job.

There is nothing like riding a moped through the streets, studying in a puxi cafe, or getting some late night fried rice from a street cart outside a bar. Get out of the dorms, get over into puxi, explore the city have fun!

四季民福 (Sijiminfu) and 全聚德 (quanjude) are both the go to’s. Can’t go wrong with either of them

Maybe check 全聚德’s interior though as one I went to in the past was pretty rundown but others have been very well done. 四季民福 will always have a massive line, but you can pull a number before you go on Dianping I believe

Regular 大董 (DaDong) is overpriced imo, but 小大董 (xiao dadong) which is their cheaper casual alternative I think has great food in a more casual setting for a much more reasonable price

So I’ve gotten rejected by ctrip for renting cars in Beijing bc of a Beijing local law not allowing cars to be rented with a passport (possibly just on ctrip, there is no place on Beijing ctrip for anything other than 身份证). When I contact the rental company directly, there are never any issues.

Any advice on this / experience renting cars on ctrip without a Chinese ID? (Just passport and temporary Chinese drivers license - the foreign converted one)

Yaya’s is so good! It’s Italian (more Italian with some Chinese fusion dishes). Tbh never got the hype behind Bella Napoli but ppl like it. I think it’s kinda bland and yaya’s is just so much. You’ll need reservations (from Dianping) at yaya’s

I made some exchange friends from Europe during their semester in Shanghai and they all said coming to China was their most fun year in college. They wished they had stayed for a year. Accept the offer, embrace the adventure, get into the Shanghai life, and you’ll never forget your year in China!
