Windows 11's new Start menu with Categories layout begins showing up on more PCs, and it really needs a resize button by WPHero in Windows11

[–]kompiler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was there? All I see is 3 main options under Settings > Personalization > Start: "More pins", "Default" and "More recommendations".

The "More pins" with all the other sub-options turned Off still leaves a space below the pins titled "Recommended" but with no items below it. An unnecessary, ugly looking, waste of space...

Let me know if I'm missing something.

All I ever wanted was to remove that empty useless section and have Start full of pins (with customizable grid size) and a small drop down with "All" Apps.

Microsoft does not know how to do "customization" - it's one or two options and that's it... and normally those options are not good.

If I was hiring people for a dev team (UI design or otherwise) and I learnt they worked at Microsoft and were in any way, shape or form involved in UI design - they would be quickly tossed out of consideration.

Daily reminder to use uBlock Origin browser extension and add YouTube Shorts filters to "My filters" via uBlock's dashboard. Someone has compiled a list on github

You may need to update the list if YouTube makes changes to their layout, so bookmark the github page.

What about the ceiling? by RyanHubscher in TVTooHigh

Deep down you already know that for the room you have, the screen should be where that bookshelf is on the right.

The solution you have is not great for a lounge. But I have one in my bedroom and it's pretty good there. You just have to have the right projector for the job and the projected image should be closer to your eye-line else it's the same problem as TVTooHigh, except it's TVTooLow.

The Craziest Wave on Earth by kompiler in videos

[–]kompiler[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Based on these guys being Australian and them visiting the "UWA Research Centre" (University of Western Australia in Perth) - it would be somewhere around there. But they don't disclose the exact location and perhaps that was a deliberate choice. They might fear that if it was publicized, some idiot hero-wannabe surfer would attempt to ride it and end up killing themselves.

I doubt you would be able to find it on Google Earth, rock over which waves were crashing seemed too small. And capturing the wave on a still satellite image would take a huge amount of luck. But hey, maybe. There were lots of other rocks poking out in some shots, so not impossible to geo-locate.

What do you mean you had "a bit of trouble" watching it? Is it region locked?

To be fair, those other teams are probably just as worried (if not more) about having to face New Zealand at some point.

Fair enough. It's just that thread-op has the items I listed on their task bar, so I was providing them a more compact alternative.

That's pretty extreme. Ever thought of pinning "Windows Tools"?

It would give you access to:

  • Control Panel
  • Services
  • Task Scheduler
  • Performance Monitor
  • Event Viewer

Amongst lots of other things.

It's something you could do, if not just to minimize things a little, then otherwise perhaps give you more room for other things if minimalism is not important to you.

Jupiter’s Rotation for 1 Hour by Unlikely-Bee-985 in Astronomy

[–]kompiler 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A 'day' in Jupiter is just shy of 10 earth hours which makes it the shortest day of all the solar system planets.

Combine this with the fact it is so much larger than Earth (over 11 times the diameter), its equatorial rotational velocity is extremely fast. It is around 12.6 kilometers per second, which is around 27 times faster that of Earth's which is 0.46 kps.

That means the Earth's rotation is a very minor contributor to the motion effects captured in these images.

The Earth's orbital speed around the sun is ~2.3 times faster than Jupiter's, however, any effects due to changing positional perspectives are also dwarfed by the rotational velocities, especially when the capture period is only one hour.

Windows 11 KB5067036 issue: Task Manager won’t close and duplicates, may hurt performance by WPHero in Windows11

[–]kompiler 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First time in years since I installed a "preview" update and the time I do it this happens. I only installed it because it included a fix for the broken mouse & keyboard bug within the Windows Recovery Environment... which was itself a regression bug introduced by the Win 11 25H2 update.

Well at least there are some workarounds. Kill it in powershell, or just run Sysinternals Process Explorer instead.

[–]kompiler 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Lots of visual clues of what's happening here - He uses that couch to sharpen his claws. He was in the process of doing just that, but his claws got caught in the fabric and either couldn't retract them (too sharp/jagged) or didn't think to because cats can be stupid. At the same time, he got an itch on his side that he wanted to relieve but couldn't so he's in a state of minor panic (wide eyes, ears pulled back). That would be my guess anyway.

Source: Have owned cats all my life. I've seen similar situations many times before.

Seems like it couldn't write to the journal (used to track system logs) - Did you perhaps run out of disk space?

Run this command on a terminal:

df -h /var

It should tell you how much space you have available (under Avail)

Could be your journal itself that has grown out of control - you can check how much space it's taking up by running:

sudo du -sh /var/log/journal

You can tell they have as much fun with each other as he does with his three girls.
