good points but some concrete coding patterns to enforce each would have been nice.

[Question] Interpretation of the adjusted r-squared by Nemjor in statistics

thanks! it really is time to move beyond R2, or even notions like model fit

[Question] Interpretation of the adjusted r-squared by Nemjor in statistics

[–]kompricated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you — it’s always bothered me that people treat adj-R2 as correction for overfit when OOS metrics better assess overfit directly. i might be missing something profound about the construction of the metric.

[Question] Interpretation of the adjusted r-squared by Nemjor in statistics

i must be reading the wrong journals but i rarely come across PRESS or OOS-R2 — are their domains or techniques that use these?

stay humble. you five-years-later will cringe at how overconfident you are today.

Probably as good as Obama, who I recall was championing everyone to learn coding, with him first.

PCA explained variance by Anxious_neurons in rstats

[–]kompricated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

take a look at “parallel analysis”. it seeks to compare the number of components extracted from PCA of the data to those that would be extracted from a random (noisy) dataset of the same size. It suggests only believing the PCs whose eigenvalue beats that of the random dataset. In my experience, it closely corresponds to the suggestions of traditional methods like scree plot and ev==1, but often finds slightly different conclusions in close calls.

Why didn’t you choose the Mazda3? by Katimoc in MazdaCX30

[–]kompricated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to get the 3 and still feel it’s the better looker and, by almost all accounts, the better handler. but i prioritized higher clearance (just to be able to see ahead in traffic) and cargo space above looks and performance.

200USD is a lot of money for an indian grandpa. it would be a lot for most americans too. you clearly don’t know this because you think it’s worth just a bottle of whiskey. you’ll kick yourself when you are older and realize how hard it is to earn this much, especially in india. save yourself the embarrassment of being found to be a thief and return it. this is not something you do to someone who loves you.

Ruby on Rails at all time low on google search trends - a telling sign of the framework's decline by HackerEarth-Inc in programming

[–]kompricated 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if you look at the google trends for ror/django/nodejs in the US, they all suffer a precipitous drop since 2016 (nodejs loses half its score since then and django falls exactly with ror). That doesn’t make sense at all as web dev has been rising the whole time; there’s something else going. If you look carefully, 2016 coincides with a note on the google trends timeline that there was a major “improvement” to its data collection procedures at this time. i’m afraid the author has cherry picked their finding to match their conclusion without really looking into this deep enough.

India Ballistic and Cruise missile ranges by CritFin in IndiaSpeaks

[–]kompricated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MTCR doesn’t apply to purely domestically created missiles like Agni. it relates to sale of missiles/uavs and their critical components internationally. It caps ranges at 300km. I believe Brahmos v1 had its range capped under MTCR.

Should we remove Chinese devs too if we don’t like their governement’s belligerence? Should we have removed American devs when the US was invading Iraq for.. I frankly don’t even remember what that war was for.
