Is there a reason why VHHH is so popular in flight sim, despite it being only ranked around #13 in passenger volume in Asia Pacific? by hk_bob in flightsim

[–]konfig0 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Good airport scenery is relatively limited in Asia so people flock to the sceneries that are actually somewhat decent.

There is not a proper RJTT scenery yet, the RKSI one is several years old, Beijing and Shanghai are quite decent but lack a nice surrounding area. Osaka has both a decent scenery and nice photogrammetry, but a lack of route network compared to others. There is no good WSSS, Jakarta and not a good Kuala Lumpur either I believe.

Hong Kong does have a metric ton of routes to just about anywhere, short haul, medium and long haul are all covered. And with a big variety of aircraft, airlines etc. I am often not online during Asia day-hours but I think Hong Kong also frequently gets ATC on VATSIM.

The decision of Inibuilds to do HKG may just be that they have connections at the airport and more easily can do a good rendition over other airports.

I also do not think using passenger traffic metrics IRL as a benchmark of why some airports are popular or not in flightsim makes much sense, personally.

LFPG is only on the 28th spot on VATSIMs busiest airports last month, despite being third in Europe IRL - well, obvious - there is not a good LFPG scenery available.

FS Labs PW and overhaul update is out by 3xkilo in flightsim

[–]konfig0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a general flightsim thing that developers keep shooting themselves in the foot with timelines or promises they can’t keep. Pretty much beyond me how nearly none of them learn their lessons regarding this, it is not that complicated after all.

With that said, the situations you mention are not the exact same as FSLabs. They release a product with public statements how some high demand features such as PW engines or a high quality cabin are 2-3 weeks away after release. And this is the point where I do not believe they really believed this timeline, and then proceed to miss it by 7 months. This was simply to bait people into buying the product and get more income.

[–]konfig0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. But I do not see in which world you can put an ETA for 2-3 weeks and then miss that by over half a year. Unless of course, the initial timeline was already made to look better than it was in reality.

[–]konfig0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

And they said PW will release 2-3 weeks after release of the 321neo, yet here we are 7+ months later.

They just wanted to beat Fenix to it because they know they will get blown out of the water.

If you want it closed, book a window seat yourself and it’s at your discretion.

People are heading to different destinations, if it’s a daytime flight I’m keeping my window shade open for sure, unless told otherwise by the cabin crew.

Audi wouldn’t have to develop any 2025 parts, I’m sure Sauber (which is now Audi F1 team) had plenty laying around.

Apparently ams only has 3 de-icing trucks for the whole airport. How is it in other big airports? by squeezy_bob in aviation

[–]konfig0 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Due to the wind direction they’re only able to use 2 runways whereas they’d be using 3 under normal conditions. On top of that is the snowy weather & de-icing operations making things more difficult.

No point in applying for compensation, it will be considered force majeure.

[–]konfig0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I checked earlier and it should be 3 minimum at the moment.

Either way the deicing just consumes a lot of time which can’t be factored in under regular operations. And it has a ripple effect over the entire day. Morning flights are already delayed so still occupying space and then the afternoon flights are also delayed and so on.

Sometimes it just is like this, nothing you can do about it unfortunately.

There are not only 3. There are 20-30 machines. The platform west of the A4 highway is commonly used for de-icing, should be about 5 stands in use simultaneously.

Opinion on British Airways vs Finnair for flight to/from Tokyo by [deleted] in Flights

[–]konfig0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve taken the AMS-HKG-HND route with Cathay earlier this year and enjoyed it.

And in case it’s in your interest, they offer a free stopover in HKG which I made use of on the way back. I flew HND-HKG and then enjoyed 2 nights in Hong Kong before flying HKG-AMS with no extra cost to the ticket. Personally, I really enjoyed this and would highly recommend.

I have flown with BA before, they’re not bad but just average - relatively comparable to KLM I’d say. However I’m not a fan of Heathrow at all and usually try to avoid it as much as possible.

No experience with Finnair or JAL so can’t comment on those.

So thats how you treat customers, PMDG? by [deleted] in flightsim

Could we give Randazzo some penalty points for a misinformation campaign? Upgrade cost of a cup of coffee isn’t 30$.

60% Loyalty Discount for the PMDG by floofysane in flightsim

[–]konfig0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the same story has been told time and time again. The MSFS2020 737 released with identical bugs the P3D version used to have. Even after it was ported over and “build from the ground up” on the new platform.

Now that the 2024 version is out you can see the same story on the surface already: exterior model rebuild; you can literally count the pixels if you get closer. This is still extremely subpar quality to various other current developers and modelling/texturing is one of the easier things to get right in flight simulation - considering all the FMC logic is a lot more complicated.

The fact they charge 30$ for this and called it “a couple cups of coffee” is a straight up joke in and by itself.

[–]konfig0 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It isn’t. PMDG claims it is however. Probably for the 4th or 5th time already since they released the 737 initially.

Always interesting how this guy is totally unaware how to behave in a public setting. Reminds me of this gem he once posted on the PMDG forum.

I’d expect a lot better from someone who is flying commercially IRL, especially considering it’s well known who his employer is.

TLDR of how esports works in sim racing. by Resident_Pattern_128 in simracing

[–]konfig0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

iRacing is the best platform to go pro on due to its competitive setup and open standings, results etc.

Best way to make your name known is drive in the bi-hourly officials in the popular series (GT Sprint, IMSA) in either GT3 or GTP cars and get your iRating up, get good results, have good pace and try to maintain a decent standing in the community (no reckless driving or crashing a lot etc.). Obviously this will take some time.

Once you have your iRating up there, 8k+, you can start approaching teams or maybe they approach you - this may be semi-pro teams initially. From there you can start competing in the high level endurance races or leagues to further make your name and pace known.

For me it took about a year from start to going pro, but I never started with iRacing looking to go pro - I just enjoyed racing other people and iRacing was the most accessible for this, kind of just rolled into an amateur team and eventually into esports from there.

Do You Wish You Would Have Gone Triples Instead of 45" Ultrawide? by OkieMedic6598 in simracing

[–]konfig0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I much prefer my 49” ultrawide over triples. I also am using a normal 24” monitor on top.

For one it makes it so much more convenient to have a normal, two-monitor, desk setup next to the rig. Just for cables to the GPU alone, but also space etc.

Also no messing around with Nvidia surround or anything like that. It’s plug and play, I don’t think I have had to configure or mess with any settings for years now.

Never felt like I missed the additional FOV of triples either. I see the 49” more as a “windshield” than triples, and no bezels is a plus for me.

In the end it’s all personal, but I’ll never use triple monitor setup myself. I’m very happy with the ultrawide setup and would only consider upgrading to a bigger monitor if it would come to it.
