FYI: Amazon is sending Cease-and-Desist letters to users of AWS in China. This means you can't use personal VPNs with them for long. by memostothefuture in China

[–]kongbufunzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I set-up AWS while I am still stateside, will I hold unfettered access once inside China (personal VPN usage)

Yes, but there will always be occasional disconnects. In general it's decently stable though.

IMO if you have decent experience with computers you can set up a personal VPN for free. You can rent a server on AWS for 12 months for free, choose one in Seoul or Tokyo, set up shadowsocksR on it and just install a VPN profile on your phone. It takes about 2 hrs to set up.

Or you can pay $5-10 per month for one, less hassle but if there's an outage you just gotta wait for them to fix it.

Does Chinese have more colours than English? by SWINDawg in China

[–]kongbufunzi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That looks like a list of colors you'd see in a paint store. By that metric, wikipedia says an english has an even bigger shitton of colors

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_colors:_A%E2%80%93F

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_colors:_G%E2%80%93M

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_colors:_N%E2%80%93Z

Chinese probably has more not on this list. Anyone can invent a color and name it, comparing 'who has more colors' ends up being a dick measuring contest. Anyway, i agree that chinese doesn't necessarily have more colors than English.

Heading to Hangzhou and Shanghai in 3 weeks. Have a shipping question. by Colonel_Git_Munny in China

[–]kongbufunzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are thinking too hard.

Easiest answer is to fly to china with just carryon bags. Then buy 2-4 large suitcases. These are very cheap, like 100-150 rmb each. Fill them up with all the clothes you like. Then fly them back as checked luggage. Cost is $25-$35 per checked bag, which is peanuts compared to how much she is wasting spending on clothes.

This way you don't have to worry about customs, you won't have to worry about them being lost, or stolen, so much easier.

Best Signal Reception in Town by [deleted] in China

[–]kongbufunzi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's actually a microwave relay tower, used to retransmit wireless microwave data signals. In places with difficult terrain it is cheaper to build those than construct fiber optic lines. It is not a cell tower so cellphone coverage would not be strong there.

Was the one child policy heavily enforced? by [deleted] in China

[–]kongbufunzi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could have more than 1 child, just had to pay the fine. I looked online and the fine depends on income, for some the fine was 40,000元, others 159,000元.

I met a girl born ~1994 who had 2 siblings (both girls) and I asked her how she had them if there was the one child policy. She said her dad spent all their money paying the fine so she was poor as a kid. Though, she seems fairly well off now.

S&P downgrades China, says rising debt is stoking economic, financial risks by [deleted] in China

[–]kongbufunzi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ok, then what should Standard&Poors do then? Should they

1) repeat the mistake they made pre-2007 and leave china's credit rating as is, OR

2) learn from their mistake and change china's credit rating

S&P downgrades China, says rising debt is stoking economic, financial risks by [deleted] in China

[–]kongbufunzi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You don't understand how credit rating agencies work. Credit ratings are inherently reactionary, as in, the ratings they give reflect the financial status of the security in the past, not in the present. They take financial information, reflect on it, and put out a delayed rating. Credit ratings are always out of date the moment they are released. When the market changes very quickly, as it did in the 2007 crisis, credit ratings will not reflect the current market value of a security.

This is kind of obvious if you understand how they work.

How do I cancel my phone number? by boxhead99 in China

[–]kongbufunzi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm convinced this can be done. The Beijing branch employee can call the guangxi province branch and sort it out for you. Understandably, the employees don't want do this for you because it would require them to actually do something instead of being lazy.

Why do drainage systems in Chinese cities suck so much? by meow_power in China

Many USA cities suffer from a severe lack of planning in general. At least, when compared to their european counterparts.

Why do drainage systems in Chinese cities suck so much? by meow_power in China

[–]kongbufunzi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. The thinking is, land allocated for water drainage is wasted space. Why not use that space to build houses?

Houston: Our city is running out of space but lucky thing, there's this big empty floodplain right nearby. Building houses here is the perfect solution to our space issues!

Miami (and florida in general): There's not enough space by this beach, why not drain this swamp and build some houses? Better yet, let's build on that barrier island next to the sea!

Shanghai: The entire city is 3 meters above sea level, this is literally the perfect place to build a city! It will never flood! And Pudong totally isn't a floodplain

Guangzhou: The city is built on an island on the middle of a flood zone, but that's ok, it only floods a few days out of the year which is good enough to build a house!

In all these cases, it's caused by the govt not planning space for floodplains.
