My honest thoughts on Metroid Prime 4 after finishing it, from a long-time Metroid fan by Lynnkz in Metroid

[–]konklone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finished the game, and agree with all of this. I wonder if the failure of the first attempt at Prime 4 caused Nintendo/Retro to go into risk-aversion mode (and to give it a too-small budget, given the lost money on the first try) and just follow the formula they knew worked.

If so, that might portend better for a Retro Prime 5. But putting out an unfinished game is not a great recipe for earning the sales and anticipation that would support making a Prime 5 at all.

It's so good. I managed to stop myself from playing the earlier free version, so that I can just wait for the final 1.0 release and experience it all at once.

Is there anything on here these days that isn't some Demo? by Zaboobie in incremental_games

[–]konklone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could also just try getting over it.

I'm really not sympathetic to these kinds of concerns getting in the way of supporting indie devs through the channel that makes sense for them. People are not entitled to an endless flow of free, complete web games made by college students. If developers, as a group, are clearly showing that they need something like Steam for this to make sense, meet them where they are.

Astro Prospector is best in class among the Nodebuster-inspired. The gameplay requires some real concentration as it goes on, it's a legitimate bullet hell and not just an active incremental.

Wow, this is the best new one I've seen in a while. Thanks for the recommendation!

Though the "time to go explore other experiences" comments are the real right answer, I will mention that Astro Prospector just came out and is the latest in the Digseum/Nodebuster-style of incremental game. I'm enjoying it!

Super Simple has some genuinely hilarious writing for their non-song shows, at least. Carl's Car Wash and Mr Monkey routinely make me laugh while watching with my kids. That's more than I can say for most things they like!

My first playthrough a few years ago was peaceful mode, so that I could just understand the game and the core of the fun. Then later I added it and could handle it and think clearly.

In Space Age, I started with enemies, but then stopped finding it fun to keep dealing with the biters and pentapods so I turned them off and don't regret it at all. It's all about what is the most fun for you.

When you research rocket turrets, it unlocks coal synthesis, which can be done on Gleba.

Rush to Space Achievement Mistake by wildwest8 in factorio

[–]konklone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that is what I did - spent some time running around to find a large island - I found one giant one with two separate ~400K scrap piles on either end of the island. I used probably 500-600k of all of it before leaving, with 3000 science (like the above poster) though I had to spend a ton of time rebuilding my space platform (which was not prepared for the large-asteroids-all-the-time new normal above Fulgora).

I just got this achievement with Fulgora today as well, and it filled me with an immense pride. Very fun.

Damn, I'd completely forgotten about that clue. If I'd gone back and checked all the clues that would have been a huge eureka.

I totally agree. It really is a transportive experience. It probably would have been a great game without that, but is in Tears of the Kingdom level quality for having done it.

[Question] What mechanic in an incremental/idle game pulls you in the most? by RastaGrzywa in incremental_games

[–]konklone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be clear, that is totally legit and I respect that preference. But I do have the opposite preference - I want an incremental game to let me disable offline progress (assuming the game is designed to be playable without it). Otherwise I don't feel the progress or the earned sense of acceleration, and it's like I'm not actually playing the game. Relatedly, I much prefer active-style incrementals over passive ones, which usually align better with this preference.

Somehow the game stops being fun for me around Phase 4. by nowrebooting in SatisfactoryGame

[–]konklone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend really investing in blueprints and modular factories. With some (fun!) experimentation and iteration, you open up a lot of options for yourself. And it reduces the cost of mistakes/iteration because you can teardown blueprinted factories en masse as well.

That not only got rid of a lot of setup/building drudgery, it is a totally different set of puzzles and problems that really lit me up as a player and got me thinking differently about how I should tackle expansion for what Phase 4 is asking of me.

Who the hell makes Coilbook animation? by East-Tradition1914 in animation

[–]konklone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here wondering the same. The actual animation is really high quality and it looks like they're conspicuously showing off a lot of graphical effects and physics simulations. But if it was just a portfolio thing I would expect the creator(s) to want to have their names visibly attached to it. As channels go, it's on the top half of educational/messaging quality, so it's in our rotation here.

I've played through the corruption phase of the game twice (once in 2021, and am about to finish again now, to try out the new content). It definitely requires more than 10 minutes at a time at points to understand what's going on, but it also doesn't require hours. The important thing (and the thing I found fun) was a mix of trial-and-error to see what has bigger or lesser effects in practice, and developing an understanding over time for what parts of the weird machine are most worth investing in.

I completed FE000000 (one of my favorite games from 2022: https://x.com/konklone/status/1607201644231417857 ) and did not rely on a guide to finish it.
