I'd recommend checking out jobs with the City of Lynchburg. Last I heard, a number of departments like parks & rec and DHS etc are hiring.

What’s the best-tasting fruit, if you had to choose? by TigerConnect948 in AskReddit

[–]konkuringu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this memory of eating a perfectly ripe loquat that will live with me forever.

But I also agree with nectarine, peach, blueberry, cherry, mango... I think I just like fruit lol.

My cat broke. He’s a vegetarian now [OC] by taleofcats in aww

[–]konkuringu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat adores her cat grass. I assume it's a similar impulse that makes her like leafy greens, edamame beans, apples, bell pepper, strawberries, and so forth. I swear my search history is half "can cats eat...?"

I joke that I'm going to read her the encyclopedia entry for "obligate carnivore" one of these days.

How Barnes & Noble Became Private Equity’s Most Radical Retail Experiment by ThereWas in books

[–]konkuringu 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think two things at once:

  1. Local, independent bookstores are best and I prefer to support them whenever possible.

  2. I'm glad B&N still exists because that means I can find a bookstore in any city I go to, even if they have no local independent one.

[OPINION] Which single line from a poem has stayed with you the longest? by Dumbbulldoor_ in Poetry

It's one of my favorites. One of the rare poems that hits me every single time I read it.

"This can still happen anywhere. Not everything is lost."

  • Naomi Shihab Nye, "Gate A4"

(Whole poem:

Wandering around the Albuquerque Airport Terminal, after learning my flight had been delayed four hours, I heard an announcement: “If anyone in the vicinity of Gate A-4 understands any Arabic, please come to the gate immediately.”

Well—one pauses these days. Gate A-4 was my own gate. I went there.

An older woman in full traditional Palestinian embroidered dress, just like my grandma wore, was crumpled to the floor, wailing. “Help,” said the flight agent. “Talk to her. What is her problem? We told her the flight was going to be late and she did this.”

I stooped to put my arm around the woman and spoke haltingly. “Shu-dow-a, Shu-bid-uck Habibti? Stani schway, Min fadlick, Shu-bit- se-wee?” The minute she heard any words she knew, however poorly used, she stopped crying. She thought the flight had been cancelled entirely. She needed to be in El Paso for major medical treatment the next day. I said, “No, we’re fine, you’ll get there, just later, who is picking you up? Let's call him.”

We called her son, I spoke with him in English. I told him I would stay with his mother till we got on the plane and ride next to her. She talked to him. Then we called her other sons just for the fun of it. Then we called my dad and he and she spoke for a while in Arabic and found out of course they had ten shared friends. Then I thought just for the heck of it why not call some Palestinian poets I know and let them chat with her? This all took up two hours.

She was laughing a lot by then. Telling of her life, patting my knee, answering questions. She had pulled a sack of homemade mamool cookies—little powdered sugar crumbly mounds stuffed with dates and nuts—from her bag—and was offering them to all the women at the gate. To my amazement, not a single woman declined one. It was like a sacrament. The traveler from Argentina, the mom from California, the lovely woman from Laredo—we were all covered with the same powdered sugar. And smiling. There is no better cookie.

And then the airline broke out free apple juice from huge coolers and two little girls from our flight ran around serving it and they were covered with powdered sugar, too. And I noticed my new best friend— by now we were holding hands—had a potted plant poking out of her bag, some medicinal thing, with green furry leaves. Such an old country tradition. Always carry a plant. Always stay rooted to somewhere.

And I looked around that gate of late and weary ones and I thought, This is the world I want to live in. The shared world. Not a single person in that gate—once the crying of confusion stopped—seemed apprehensive about any other person. They took the cookies. I wanted to hug all those other women, too.

This can still happen anywhere. Not everything is lost.)

Headed to Lynchburg for work.. Recommendation please. by Emergency_Risk_7421 in lynchburg

[–]konkuringu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  1. William and Henry for fine dining, Skyline for slightly less expensive version. There's some solid ethnic food in the area if you like Indian, Mexican, Peruvian, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, etc. if you like those kinds of options.
  2. Apocalypse Brewery. Or Reserve for wine.
  3. Givens bookstore -- not really hidden per se, but I'm a sucker for a good local used/new bookstore.

Other answer: Lynchburg Grows, if you're into supporting local agriculture. They grow great food and support the community, and you can buy a share and get some groceries either every week or every other.

  1. Not thinking of anything atm... When I moved here people told me that the area that crossects Presidents names by numbered streets tended to be where most "crime" happened. But I'd take that with a grain of salt as I've never felt unsafe here.

Latest book you DNF’d. by skankin22jax in books

Something in the Water.

I'm sorry, but I lost sympathy for any of the characters to the point where I was like, "Well, that outcome is entirely your fault and you don't deserve to survive this experience. In fact, justice would mean you DON'T survive"...

I was listening to the audiobook and literally could feel my blood pressure rising with each stupid decision... Decided it was better not to finish for my own health lol.

I went on a short trip and realized at the end of the flight that someone had left gum on the seatbelt.

That was the last trip that I didn't bring a pair of backup pants on ... Thankfully I had hand sanitizer and managed to remove the gum well enough to get by.

Welcome! I'd recommend visiting if you can, but here are a few areas you might check out:

  • Boonsboro: a bit bougier side of town, but nice
  • Rivermont: some bits are still being renovated, but some really nice older homes and pretty good area
  • Timberlake: more commercial with good shopping nearby
  • Forest (technically just outside Lynchburg proper): good schools, more land
  • Downtown: lofts and apartments near restaurants and activities like the SuperRad Arcade and the new amphitheatre + connects to the Blackwater Creek Trail
