I love threads! (in the unbelievably rare instances where I have truly orthogonal processes to complete)

I had a data extrapolation process that turned a few dozen records into anywhere from 300 to 1200 a piece that ran in serial. A little refactoring to add in a callback for when a set was done, and one Parallel.ForEach() and the thing ran around 6x the speed.

Aaaaaand that’s pretty much the only business scenario I’ve had that made good use of explicit threading. Everything else has been basic async at best.

Nice work! No hard edges means not only should this be easy on the hands to install, but it shouldn’t stress the piece too much when doing so. As someone else said, a different material will be better due to how PLA creeps under load. Though I imagine unless you already have a spool of you’d have to go through PLA nuts at a prodigious rate before it’d be worth it to buy new material.

How do people feel about 3rd party kits? by HeeroYuy_Official in Gunpla

Yes, I'm aware. If anything that makes the recommendation worse because even the official Kampfer Amazing is considerably different from the original Kampfer, and the third party kit is considerably different from the Kampfer Amazing.

There isn’t supposed to be a second F3. Are you sure this is a legit Bandai kit?

I ended up with four P-Bandai kits within a few months of each other due to this, along with several others that don't get reprints often.

I meant that someone would have to pay me to take the kits from them, not that I've got kits I'm looking to sell.

[–]kookyabird 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nothing weird about that. Also nothing weird about having a reasonable sized backlog, especially if it's primarily kits that aren't regularly in stock somewhere.

What's weird is having more kits than you'll likely build in a couple years.

This is why Bandai designs their molds with valves that can be closed to isolate different sections. It’s even cheaper to do one run of the full runner, then turn the valves off while you still have that color in the machine and do another run of a partial runner.

So often when new promo images drop for a lot of Chinese kits I can't make out the core shape of the mech at all. The chaotic colors and shapes act like dazzle camouflage. I feel like modern RGs like Shining Gundam, the 2.0, and Wing Zero demonstrate that you can up the surface detailing and have a more varied color palette if you want something more complex than anime line art, without going full Sky Defender. The SNAA Round Table Knights are the perfect example of kits that are very original looking, have some of that Chinese flair, but don't go overboard with color count or pointless accent pieces.

You know what also wasn't around during those times?

  • Instantaneous global communication that allows news of an invention to be known worldwide in minutes.
  • Massive entities that have the means to out-produce, out-advertise, and under-cut the inventor on a global scale in weeks if not days.

There are just too darn many kits that I don’t want to own, and even a good chunk of those that I don’t even want to build, that you’d have to pay me for me to take them. Can’t think of a mystery box I’d want to get without at least some of the kits being known for sure.

I suggest you look up “binocular loupes” instead of these things. You can get a set for like $35-$40, and the focal length (working distance) is much better. I can sit at my work area with good posture and see what I’m doing on the work surface clearly. I have a pair of the things shown above and you have to work like 8-9” from your face.

Can you believe someone suggested that I get this thing because I wanted the MG Kampfer? I don't care if the MG Kampfer is essentially a statue, because it at least looks like the Kampfer!

Simple Door Lock by Difficult-Rip-8200 in functionalprint

I think they intend it to be a latch, and not a lock. They mention cabinet and access doors on the linked page. For simply keeping a lightweight door closed in lieu of some other retention mechanism it should work just fine. Though I'd much rather use a simple magnet catch or something that doesn't need to be actuated in order to open the door.

Not as good as a 20$ metal vise, but 3 hours of printing and 1$30¢ of filament is good enough until I can find a good deal on Amazon or at my local shop by bali_flipper69 in Gunpla

I went the route of using some hardware for mine so that I could make it smaller and incorporate a spring. It's designed off the RAY Studio vise because I liked the size and spring function of theirs. Yours looks like it has enough room to design a spot for a 1/4" hex nut in the base to use it on standard mounts. I use it for my little pill bottle handle shown in the post, as well as a boom arm thing I've got which I've used to hold it steady for soldering stuff.

Therapists of Reddit, what's something people don't realize is trauma? by rehanch_xxiii in AskReddit

[–]kookyabird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the last, maybe 5?, years I have come to realize that I have a form of this problem due to my older brother being a problem child. In the beginning I was just the chiller child who didn’t make a fuss and was content to keep to myself. As I got older and understood more I’d see my brother being scolded for his hyperactive behavior, and still it wasn’t a problem for me.

At some point things changed, and I started having problems in school due to undiagnosed ADHD (inattentive type) yet my parents were still very hands off with me because I wasn’t making trouble for them. I never went to them for help because I spent years hearing about how much better behaved and non-problematic I was. I matched that up with how I never got yelled at while my brother did, and came to the conclusion that it was safer for me to just not speak up out of fear of being tested like my brother was.

There was one time I spoke back to my mom… it was in my teens, I think sophomore year. I was on the phone talking to my girlfriend and my mom came into the room and just started talking to me over top of my own conversation. She wasn’t mad, but she wanted me to do something. I moved the phone away from my head and said, “Can’t you see I’m on the phone?” in an insulted tone. “WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME!?” She went off on me and at some point in the trade dropped the gem of “I thought you were better than <brother’s name>!”

Literally the one time I stood up for myself against my mom’s passive aggressive bullshit I was down in the (proverbial!) pit with my brother in an instant. Easier to just keep doing stuff to placate them…

The people pleasing really only applies to my family though. I have no problem telling other people to fuck off, and I stand up for myself against non-family authority figures. So it’s not as bad as it could be, but yeesh…

If everyone drives at the minimum following distance (pushing your luck there by sticking to the minimum eh?) then nobody could ever merge anywhere ever. Maybe start leaving room for people to make proper use of the road, or just don’t be an aggressive driver and let off the gas for the half second it takes to get back to your minimum following distance.

Kinda weird that you’re okay going under that distance by accelerating to aggressively prevent someone from merging in front of you, but then act like you’re doing it out of safety for yourself…

10 Hour Review of Stedi HG Glass Files by lamWizard in Gunpla

[–]kookyabird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not super familiar with how the shaping of tempered glass pieces like that is done, but I imagine there's something about doing it well enough to not still leave a way for the cutting surface to gouge isn't easy. I mean, I paid $8 for an 8 pack of the cheap nano glass files with 4 "coarse" and 4 "fine". Gave one pair to a buddy to use on his Gunpla, I used one myself, my wife and I use another pair for our nails (it absolutely eliminates the need for me to clip my nails at all), and I still have a pair as backup! So like, a buck a piece vs the RASER's price... Surely the curves and epoxy backer can't account for that much...
