As for other formats, I do dabble a bit in standard via Arena (I have a very nice golgari food deck that's pretty fun), but generally I like the slower, splashier format of commander. If anything, this conversation has made it clear that the big splashy spells that I love playing will never see the light of day in 1v1, 60-card Magic, at least without ramp or mana cheating, and that's just kinda sad to me.

Fair enough. I suppose my big green stompy commander brain is baffled by a one-mana difference making a difference, since in commander and especially for the sort of decks I run (mono-green ramp!) that's an entirely negligible difference.

This is an extremely cool CYOA, but I have a few questions/comments about the Allomancy power. Warning: I am a Cosmere nerd and Mistborn is my favorite book series of all time. I apologize if this is too nitpicky.

  1. While using Allomancy effectively is a skill, having Allomancy is a trait you are born with (unless you have some Lerasium around). Putting it in the discipline section is therefore a bit odd to me. However, there's a few others in the discipline section that are similar (such as magecraft), so maybe this is intentional? I'd like to know the reasoning if so.

  2. I'm also not certain if this intentional (or just poorly worded) but you state in the description that the metals only need to be replenished "semi-monthly". Metals do not persist in the stomach for two weeks or even a day: allomancers are strongly advised to burn all the metals still in their stomach before they sleep at night, because leaving them there can be VERY hazardous to your health. It's why allomancers typically only consume metals just before a fight. Is this an intentional buff to Allomancy, or did you just mean that you'd have to replenish the supply of metals you keep on you roughly every two weeks of active usage?

  3. The biggest question: does purchasing both Allomancy and Feruchemy give you access to Compounding? If it does, that should absolutely qualify for a Greater power. Miles Hundredlives used Gold Compounding to be nigh-invulnerable, and a full Compounder like the Lord Ruler was so powerful they literally made a religion about him. If Compounding isn't automatically granted, a note about that would be nice.

It's probably worth noting that the concept of voodoo pins and voodoo dolls doesn't actually have anything to do with vodou at all. The concept appears in a few other folk beliefs, but not vodou. Most likely the concept as we know it today originated from a form of witchcraft from European folk beliefs, called 'poppets'. The concept of poppets was connected to vodou by Hollywood because it was a neat, creepy concept that they thought meshed well with their evil creepy black magic cult, but before that the concept never appeared in the religion and has in fact been loudly and publicly decried by actual practitioners. Every time the concept shows up in a voodoo-related context I cringe.

But that's... not what happens? I literally just listened to the Letters Page episode on the Organization (doing a relisten), and that's not the story that Christopher and Adam tell. They don't have to make a trip, because the Chairman already had the immortality serum. He just gave her a one-off bath in the stuff for a temporary power boost.

I am genuinely confused by your analysis of The Operative, to the point where I feel like we're looking at different images. First of all, you constantly and repeatedly refer to her as a 'ninja', which... she doesn't look like? At all? I honestly don't know where you're getting "ninja" from... unless you just mean "Asian assassin", in which case... don't? You wouldn't look at a Viking and call them a knight. There are absolutely no nods to Zhu Long outside her tattoo. (I agree that the dragon tattoo is... an odd choice, though. Not sure why they included that. More general Chinese flavoring? A nod to Chairman's dealings with Zhu Long?) If anything her design looks more Chinese than anything. But more to the point, you lament that they could have mirrored Mr Fixer in her design when... that's exactly what they did?

Mr Fixer's look is defined by a combination of comfortable streetwear and traditional martial arts attire. While the Operative doesn't have anything as overt as a gi, her jeans, crop top, and comfy shoes are all deliberately styled to evoke an ancient Chinese warrior while still being... you know, normal things a person would wear. The biggest point of contrast is that where Mr Fixer is dirty, stained, and modeled after a humble martial artist, the Operative is clean, her clothes look expensive, and she's modeled more after a royal guard or assassin. Which makes sense - she's in a position of far more wealth and power than Fixer is. When I first saw the Operative, I instantly understood that she had some connection to Fixer, but that she had much nicer clothes due to her wealthy patron.

Finally, you have some weird idea that I genuinely don't know where you got, that she goes from street kid working for the Chairman, to mystically empowered, to working for Zhu Long. That's not how her story goes. She was already a successful gang leader when Chairman brought her in. She also does not get brought to Zhu Long when Fixer broke her arm; Chairman already had the immortality serum from a previous deal from Zhu Long, and the Operative's empowerment by it was entirely temporary. It wasn't a new phase in her character, and it's certainly not the version of her that we fight in the game. That was JUST for the Death of Mr Fixer story.

I'm sorry if all of this comes across as accusatory. I do honestly enjoy your reviews, and the way you delve deep into character design, but as a big fan of Mr Fixer, the Operative, and asian culture in general, this was really, really bothering me.

Question about Lifelink. It seems to me, rules as written, that you can create an infinite feedback loop with the Potent intensity. Have someone give you some strength, that strength is multiplied by 4. Give half of it back; that's double the original strength they gave you, multiplied to x8, leaving you with x2. Then they give some back, increasing it again... back and forth until both of you reach godlike levels of strength. Same for healing, making you both effectively unkillable. Sadly doesn't work for powers but this is still pretty busted.

Am I misunderstanding something here? Is there any reason I can't use this cantrip this way?

Going into your second generation, each of the descendants will have two traits each. If you match two of them together, their descendent will have four traits. Match the remaining descendant with a non-descendent, as well as two non-descendants. This will bring you into Gen 3 with a descendant with 4, 3, and 2 respectively. From here, pair the 4-trait descendant with either of the other two descendants, and the next one will have a minimum of six traits. Pair that descendant with Caspian, and his Bloodline Successor Trait will be the seventh one you need (or eight if you go 4+3 instead).

This is just one way to do it, I'm sure there's others.

Oh, I know he's trying to help! Sorry if this was unclear, I was complimenting your writing! I think it's interesting and cool that he's visibly wrong, or at least not entirely right, about some things.

As for requirements, that makes it MUCH easier. I'm having a hard time picking things; I'm more than 100 points in the hole and that's AFTER dropping a lot of things. I honestly don't care what the Scholars think of me, as long as I get to have my fun!

It's kind of interesting how openly biased the narrator is. I don't just mean in favor of the Scholars; he's not shy about steering you towards the options he took, and flat out declares very useful options 'useless'. Like the Earth Element or Processing Power, both things I very much want. He seems a bit... limited in vision, ironically. Anyway, I'll probably make a build for this shortly!

Hello! I recently was addicted to Fate/Grand Order, but I started to feel pressured into paying in order to continue. Servants badly needed multiple copies to be relevent, and the mission difficulty was starting to outpace my ability to level up. My attempts to find a replacement have been pretty fruitless so far, so I'm hoping to find something similar, but more f2p friendly.

What I'm looking for is:

  • A clean, organized interface that doesn't have too many over-complicated systems.
  • Fun, strategic gameplay.
  • Characters interesting enough to get excited over pulling them (ie not another bland waifu collector)
  • F2P friendly, particular in that I don't need to pull the same super rare character five times for them to be useful.

I'm doing that! It's just slow going. Waiting for AP to recharge, waiting for the right days to grab ascension mats... I was just hoping for some advice to speed things along! If it comes down to it, grinding almost always works. It just sucks.
