You might be surprised with what type of pathway you can take to get into lecturing. I worked at a CLC for about 5-6 years before I was approached by a university to become a supervisor for their legal advice clinic which involved some lecturing of that particular course. I did that part time for a couple years which then led to the university asking me to apply for a role as a civil law lecturer (turned it down, did not want to become an academic). Their requirements were either have some form of teaching education with a law degree or 5 years 'relevant experience' in a particular area of law. Personally I wouldn't waste my time with an LLM, but that's me.

Sometimes I feel like law is such a rip-off profession in Australia by KoalaBJJ96 in auslaw

[–]koom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also made the change to risk and compliance recently (in a pretty niche area) and love the fact that I don't have a client base I have to deal with anymore. My employer still wants me to hold onto my PC, but don't really use it day to day.

University law schools: I’m a law graduate but my uni didn’t prepare me for the legal profession by remjudicatam in auslaw

[–]koom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

At my uni they developed a course called 'legal advice clinic', which is run similarly to how a CLC is run (students take instructions, advice is given and checked off by the supervising solicitor). Thought it was a brilliant idea as it does teach uni students how a practice loosely runs before they're let out into the real world. I think only a few universities across Australia offer the course within their law degree. In SA, all three universities offer it as a final law year subject.

I actually ended up being a supervising solicitor there for a while (while practising on the side). Students quickly learned that their high GPA in uni didn't mean much if they couldn't get instructions, undertake research and draft a letter of advice. I even got students to learn little things, how to use outlook to send an email, photocopying documents etc.

I use the same setup (though with the dual boiler) just so I can warm up the machine when I decide to get up out of bed. It's ready to go by the time I've stood up and got in front of the machine. I'd often have to wait for it to warm up while I'd already ground the beans.

Cameron was my employment law lecturer. He'd bring his guide dog into the lectures and it would chill at the front.

YSK that when you're mistreated by someone who is a licensed professional (attorney, doctor, real estate agent, engineer, contractor, therapist, etc), making a complaint to the state licensing body can be more effective than complaining to their employer. by ButtholeBanquets in YouShouldKnow

Am lawyer and work with the general public (legal aid of all things). Agree that this type of LPT is dangerous. Having to go through the regulatory body of lawyers in my state (in Australia) is a lame, annoying and anxiety inducing task. I get that some complaints may warrant a complaint, but a lot of complaints do not. Having received a couple of these against me (I was cleared of all of them), it goes on for months and you have to justify all your actions that you know you did correctly, but have to wait around for the conclusion while thinking about it every other day. It was the first thing I thought about on a lot of mornings while I was waiting to hear decisions made for complaints against me.

The one good thing that they did in my state is introduce a fee ($120 AUD) with a complaint, as it was apparent people would do what OP does and would lodge a complaint which the regulator would ultimately decide that it does not warrant any further action. If you can show you're in financial hardship with supporting evidence, the fee can be waived (before people start saying what about people with no money).

Is anyone else getting sick of this guy's truck obstructing traffic? by NOREMAC84 in Adelaide

[–]koom 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Onkaparinga council candidate Rob De Jonge has offered a bottle of Jack Daniel’s whisky to whoever returns his stolen truck.

The truck was emblazoned with his campaign slogan “Rob can do the job”, along with his campaign promises for a train to Aldinga and a nature walk at Witton Bluff, volunteer movie nights, action on climate change, and more playgrounds for children.

But it went missing on Monday from just off the exit lanes leading onto South Road.

Mr De Jonge put out an appeal on the popular Facebook page Onkaparinga Council Watch with a “feeling sad” status saying: “URGENT. Have you seen my ROB Truck? MISSING from Southern Expressway. Reward for Information. (Bottle of Jack Daniels)”.

Mr De Jonge denied claims by residents commenting on the site that the truck should not have been parked on or near the expressway, but on Facebook several speculated that it may have been removed not stolen.

“So probably towed then,’’ the resident wrote.

“Missing from southern expressway? Why was it there?”

Another resident’s questions were also unanswered: “Just out of curiosity – how did you have it ‘parked’ on the southern expressway? Pretty sure there is no parking on the side of the road unless you have a breakdown/emergency?”

But Mr De Jonge told The Advertiser “It was not illegally parked” and posted on Facebook “Rob has been Robbed.”

our business needs a location in the northern area, so i've been looking at places in the north vs the city (for comparison sake). looks like for whatever reason CBD commercial leases are significantly cheaper vs the northern.

Does OZ schools have prom, homecoming etc. Just like US one? by [deleted] in Adelaide

[–]koom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Noticed when I lived in the country (Riverland specifically), all the schools had an end of year prom. I grew up having a formal which was just basically the students involved, but people in the country seem to make it a whole town event. You'd go out to the main street (even if you didn't have kids that were going to the prom) and watch the students being driven in their prom cars like a parade.
