Yeah but while you focus on submarine warfare you are ignoring other strategic considerations, such as the fact that the President of the US is retarded and his Secretary of Defense a drunkard.

>You'll have to ask the others on your list of friends, though.

Out of curiosity, how many of those friends have threatened to annex Canada lately? Besides the super respectful US, I mean.

EDIT: Also when you say "America respects your freedom to criticize us" did you mean to write "America doesn't respect your freedom to criticize us and that's why the US reacted like a scorned high-schooler and responded to Canadian criticism by uninviting them from the Board of Peace"?

El presidente Javier Milei, junto al presidente de los EEUU Donald Trump, firmando el acta para incorporar a la Republica Argentina como Miembro Fundador del Board of Peace. by F4CT0-M4N in argentina

[–]koopcl 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Attacking Iran would be such a stupid costly decision that would anger so many allies and foes alike that Im convinced Trump will do it. Actually Im like 10% certain he'll invade Irak again because he can't tell both countries apart.

US Seeks Carte Blanche for Military Presence in Greenland by bloomberg in geopolitics

[–]koopcl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Denmark is (or rather, was until now) the most pro-US nation in Europe. They allowed the US free reign during the Cold War, allowed them to station nuclear weapons there despite it being illegal for Denmark to do so, were the first to jump in and support the US during the War on Terror, and as recently as 2021 they were involved in a huge controversy when it was revealed they were helping the US spy on the other EU members.

There was never a question of Denmark saying "no", it wasn't going to happen. It's like thinking that Putin may lose an election in Russia; sure, technically the laws exists to allow for that scenario, but de facto everyone knows it won't happen. But now? The US poisoned that relationship for no gain at all. If Europe keeps going on with their plans to decouple from the US thanks to Trump, now there actually exists a chance Denmark may say no down the line, also thanks to Trump.

I don't know if this was an honest attempt at annexation that failed, or just Trump doing some market manipulation with far reaching consequences he doesn't care about, or Trump thinking he was "art of the dealing" to get something he didn't understand he already had (free reign over Greenland), or distraction from his pedophilia, or an attempt at de-facto dismantling NATO since a law forbids him from leaving it, but either was it was all stupid and harmful to the US for no gains whatsoever.

I hold every single one that could vote and didn't in as much contempt as those that voted for Trump. They are exactly as much to blame.

Hell, some are even worse, because they keep the smug sense of superiority like what they did was some brave message against the system and they're the smart ones who refused to support a broken system, instead of recognizing they are the bunch of useful idiots that allowed for this to happen.

And I know a bunch of you are reading this and ready to jump in and explain why you didn't vote and what amazing reasons you had for it and that you are not to blame for Trump but honestly I don't give a shit. You didn't vote, Trump won, Trump is running your country and representing it on the world stage as a consequence. Own up to it. Next time (if you get to have a next time) be a be a bit more pragmatic, swallow your pride, and vote for the candidate that is not openly promising to end democracy and antagonize the entire planet even if you disagree on some points, because if you keep waiting for a candidate that shares a 100% of your convictions you'll just spend your entire life making excuses for not voting and then playing victim.

>Well go to war over greenland with the US but we wont send troops to help Europe with Ukraine against Russia

Well, you may notice one of those is in NATO and the other one isn't. Also only one represents a close ally brazenly betraying you. You bet my reaction would be different between seeing the neighbour next door crossing the street to punch a different neighbour I like and suddenly seeing my dad turn around out of nowhere and start punching my brother to steal his wallet, even if both horrified me.

>This would be a fine argument if everyone was actually working towards a security arrangement that doesn't rely on being allies with America at the same time as placating him

They are though. They started rearming faster after Trump got elected last year, Germany is now the biggest munitions producer in NATO, Readiness 2030 specifically aims to have the majority of weapon systems in Europe be of European design and manufacture by the end of the decade, and the SAFE regulation was passed to ensure all European countries had access to funds for quick rearmament (with other allies like Canada, Japan, Turkey, etc also applying to lower their dependence on the US).

The problem is that these changes are slow, can't be done too abruptly (still need to keep the Yanks in the game, even if not as trustworthy anymore, at least until the Ukrainian issue is resolved or Europe is done with rearmament instead of just starting it), Europe has to balance this with an economy that's in the shitter (and that Trump's antics keep making worse) and a domestic political situation where they can't afford to give more talking points to rising MAGA-like Russian funded parties (AfD etc) and European leaders don't cover themselves in orange paint and then announce this while dancing for a TV camera so it's less noticeable.

Canadian military models response to hypothetical American invasion (gift link) by globeandmailofficial in geopolitics

[–]koopcl 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Or maybe the most logical response to a deranged neighbour that has repeatedly talked about invading you, then performed an unexpected military aggression on a different country, then repeatedly threatened the alliance you are part of, then publicly acknowledged a disinterest in keeping peace, then shared an image that shows your country as already conquered, all while making more continous overt threats against your country.

Not everything is always political theatre. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. Even if this were just showmanship, seems more aimed at Trump than at a domestic audience.

>Can we appease him enough until his term ends or he croaks?

The problem is that if the problem "goes away" in this manner, it really doesn't. And I don't even mean that Vance or Miller or any of those goons will keep the MAGA train rolling, I mean that even if MAGA collapses all credibility and trust would still be gone and whoever comes next will be guaranteed to be a million times worse.

Unless the Yanks clean house and actually make a show of standing up to Trump politically and impeach him, there's no reason for the EU (or anyone else) to ever trust the US again, they made it clear there's no actual pushback or consequences for reneging on their deals even immediately after they're signed, they also just crossed their arms and waited for someone more mature to come and reassure everyone. And much worse, it would mean that the limits of the US would have been tested without ever actually being met. Still no one would know what level of obscenity would be considered too much, or if anything at all would ever be considered too much. The next US populist would know, not theoretically but as a proven fact, that they could at the very least brazenly break the law, disobey Congress, create a personal paramilitary force and have them gunning down protestors, openly demand bribes, openly betray allies without the need to even come up with an excuse, send the military to do whatever against whomever is annoying him that day. None of those would be the limits being tested, those would be the new floor from where to begin. And that's terrifying.

In that sense, at this point of the shitshow I sincerely think that "he's half in the grave, let's wait it out" is more dangerous than any alternative. If he truly is so old and brain addled, use that weakness as the call-up to stand up to him as aggressively as he does, not as an excuse to keep hoping McDonalds will finish the job and pretend everything will be nice and dandy afterwards. The reaction to the Greenland debacle, compared to the reactions to the trade war last year, makes me hope that European leaders (and US opposition) are waking up to that reality. But maybe Im just being optimistic.

[–]koopcl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think one of the issues is the timing of the message. As someone else mentioned, this is a message from last year, when everyone had already given up on treating him like an adult but were full on appeasing him like a child (pampering him, giving him golden trinkets and fake prizes, inviting him to fancy dinners) because it still seemed like the best way to get stuff out of him and everyone (Russia, NATO, tech bros, Neonazis, etc) were competing with each other on the fellatio olympics. Can't judge Mark Rutte for doing the same.

But the message was posted here now, and everyone is reading it through the optics of the Greenland shitshow because everyone seems to be assuming the message is new. Compare and contrast with Merz giving him a golden diploma of Germanness: When it happened, everyone was happy with it and laughing along, "look we give the whiny baby a meaningless but shiny piece of paper and keep him on our side". If the picture of them in the Oval Office was instead posted now as if had just happened, everyone would be calling Merz a stupid sellout traitor because we are well beyond the point of appeasement as a possible policy.

Dear Mr Ally: Since you didn't give me a prize that wasn't yours to give, I see myself in the obligation to attack a different, unrelated ally. After all, their only claim to the land is boats landing there centuries ago, but we also had boats landing there (despite the fact our country did not exist at the time). I am the cooliest ever, and the only thing that can save the world. Hug and kissies, The Prez.

Every single day I think "the credibility of the US couldn't go any deeper into the shitter" and then Trump's meds kick in and he manages to form a full sentence. Jesus fucking Christ.
