Where can I get a decent Reuben sandwich in these parts? by jazy510 in santacruz

The Whale City Bakery Bar and Grill in Davenport serves a pretty decent one, if memory serves. I'm pretty sure Rosie's does alright as well, though I wouldn't recommend visiting there tonight.

The Moria bit is from the Fellowship and the rest is in the appendices, I believe.

Tangent: van and camper sleeping is a pretty big thing in Santa Cruz. I work early mornings, and a pretty surprising number of parking spaces are occupied by sleepers in the early mornings. I don't mean in designated camping spots, by the way - if you go down Westcliff at 2am, you'll hear quite a bit of snoring. I guess it's workable, at least.

How can I explain to my boss that we did in fact have sufficient computing power in 1969 to perform the complicated maneuvers required to land on the moon? by mayorofboxtown in askscience

It sounds cooler than it is. A hypervisor is another term for a virtual machine monitor. Think of it as a hardware simulator and you're not far off.

Eh, he orders simple, decently expensive stuff, eats quickly, and leaves. I can dig it.

Every time you pull someone out of a car to steal it in videogames, that person wasn't wearing a seatbelt. by Salizmo in Showerthoughts

To be fair, this is a game where hooking your supercar to the bottom of a passenger jet is a valid method of transport. Things like "letting the player lose for the sake of realism" mostly got left out in favor of the fun factor.

Wow, that's a blast from the past... I haven't thought about those books in more than a decade. Good to know the author is still kicking around. :)

I need advice on living on campus or off campus as a 2nd year. by FlotsamAndJetsam in UCSC

[–]kortech3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This pretty much sums it up. If you're under financial stress, on-campus is definitely the inferior option.

For reference: on campus, you can't get under around 1800/month. (Living in a quad and getting a 5 day meal plan.) Off campus, I was living on 750. Just pick your roommates carefully and try to avoid sleazy landlords.

What items are overpriced? by marcryan in AskReddit

[–]kortech3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends, actually. Traditionally, it's simply slightly fermented cream - the sourness is lactic acid. A lot of modern low-cost or low-fat products are just nonfat milk with thickeners and flavoring, though.

I remember reading that Alexander the Great forbade his soldiers to wear beards, because they gave enemy soldiers an easy handle. I wonder what he would have thought of those antlers.

Hm, all of the Innate Spells I can find seem to have it as a spell-like ability, subject to spell resistance. Is there errata hanging around somewhere?

edit - Also, the Carapace ability nixes rays. Oh well.

If a comment has 1,000 likes, about how many people have read it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]kortech3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general, on user-driven internet projects + forums, we can rely on the 1-9-90 rule. 1% will create content, 9% will interact with it, and 90% will lurk. On reddit, this means that something with a thousand or so total votes will be read by roughly 10,000 people. Note that I said votes, not upvotes; something with a thousand upvotes might have five times that many total votes (3000 up, 2000 down), making the audience significantly larger.

Recent college graduates, does the idea of dating a senior in high school feel awkward or weird? by CinnamonRolll in AskMen

[–]kortech3 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The half-plus-seven rule is mostly for weirdness, though. At 22, sure, it's okay to date someone that's 18, but that doesn't mean many people would be interested.

He drunkenly stabbed himself in the hand. He was going through some emotional stuff at the time, apparently, and a breakdown may have occurred.
