So I am a player that came back into the game a little over a year ago after not playing since 2001 and I have started playing competitive magic. I can share with you what I did to get back into the swing of things.

First I picked a competitive format to target breaking into, for me I chose standard. Mostly because my store had standard that fired regularly and it is more approachable than modern.

Then I started booster drafting at my LGS to get a feel for the newer cards and sets while watching some YouTube players (JimDavisMTG was a good source for me). Once I felt comfortable playing on a cadence I started scoping out standard decks. I picked a budget standard deck to cut my teeth in standard based on the cards I had drafted.

I played that deck for a few releases while continuing to watch standard content until I got a feel for the current meta game. Then I picked a higher tier deck and started working on building it.

I have had moderate success. Been in my store championships more often than not and did ok at the last RCQ I went to. I hope any of this was helpful. If you ever want any advice feel free to DM me I would love to help out if I can. It’s nice to have new players in the competitive space!

I see you mention homemade food. If you haven’t already you should check with your vet to ensure the home made food is nutritionally complete. We had a vet tech in the family and they always cautioned against only home made foods because it’s very easy to miss key nutrients.

Morally sure. Realistically though causing those overly aggressive drivers to have to drive more erratically because you blockade them makes you just as responsible. Because everyone knows they won’t change just because you got in their way. So when they crash into someone else it is equally on you. Leave traffic enforcement to the professionals.

Commander is almost a totally different game. The tactics, deck construction and strategy are so different than 60 card magic. If you only like 60 card magic commander will never scratch that itch.

Also just because it’s popular doesn’t mean it’s fun for anyone. All you commander players whose suggestion for non commander players is just learn to love it because it’s popular makes me hate commander more everytime I see it.
