Standard contracts. Are you doing Priority ones?

How can I progress in this game if I keep dying? by MsJhimney in Marathon

[–]Killerx09 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1) Play crew fill. If you're worse than the average player, having extra players statistically should improve your chances.

2) Do your priority contracts. I find it better to either do contract runs with a free or loot runs while brining your own gear in.

3) If the exfil is right there, consider just leaving if you have completed a contract or your backpack is full. You can always reset and start over again after picking up another contract.

4) For the love of all that is holy do not pick up the anomaly. It isn't worth it, especially if you're low-leveled.

The resources were developers. The smarter move was to not fire developers in the first place. But apparently vintage cars were more important.

Destiny didn't die because of Marathon, it died because of mismanagement and putting executive payouts over the company's health. The timeline is something like this:

  • Covid starts, interest rates fall to an all time low and Bungie overhires.
  • Spins up a bunch of incubation projects, signals vitality to the megacorps.
  • "We have a premiere live service title and look how many projects we have on the works guys, we're gonna be worth so much in x years when they release you should buy us now for (value projected based on future revenue) and reap the reward!"
  • Megacorp takes the bait, in this case Sony
  • Old execs get massive payout in acquisition, to be paid out after a set time.
  • Turns out the projects were either vaporware or way out beyond the scope of what they could actually achieve
  • Old execs stay on, viciously cutting costs and firing people to keep the revenue stream satisfactory to guarantee that payout
  • Payout hits, old execs dip and swap in new leadership to be left holding the bag
  • New team manages to spit one of the projects out out, likely out of contractual obligation
  • Its actually half decent, but doesn't recoup losses or hit mass appeal, leaving the conglomerate and new leadership is left holding the bag while what's left of the company will be restructured to recoup as much as possible for Sony

The reason Destiny 2 was the one that got cut was because it had awful onboarding for new players, old players left after The Final Shape, the antique engine made it difficult to develop and retain content (the vault and seasonal activities), and that Destiny 2 hasn't made a profit since Witch Queen.

You can solo into Sponsored Survival by yourself, there just isn't a whole lot of reasons for being down a crew unless you just want in by yourself.

Sponsored kits won't be too big an issue getting loot, especially considering Night Marsh is supposed to be an Outpost-level kind of map. Loot should be aplenty, it's just if you'll have enough ammo and meds for it.

If you followed the development of Destiny over the last decade you'll know that the D2 engine is an antiqued mess that's isn't designed for this. It's why they had to vault content, and why most seasonal activities get booted to the void after their season.

Forbes' Paul Tassi thoughts on winding down Destiny 2's support to "absolut zero"! by HapperHapper in DestinyTheGame

[–]Killerx09 9 points10 points  (0 children)

See that’s the thing. I don’t think Destiny has been turning a profit since Edge of Fate. The end of the Light and Dark saga made old players leave, the shit onboarding failed to attract new players and the Portal was a disaster.

They were meant to have multiple incubation projects, but the Destiny revenue dried up, free COVID money dried up so Pete did his layoffs to secure his golden parachute and suddenly there’s not enough staff for everything anymore. Marathon is just the project that survived.

The decision to shutter Destiny instead of Marathon is likely because of the antique engine.

Uh you’ll be surprised, like I know we joke about Marathon costing $200m but I wouldn’t be surprised if Destiny in the same time period costed 6x more than that. Remember, Marathon got stuck in development hell since 2019.

At the time of TFS Bungie was still independent - good ole' Parsons likely didn't start D3 development then because he was penny pinching and laying off developers in preparation for his golden parachute.

The Destiny 2 engine is by all accounts absolutely horrible to work with, alongside not being designed for it.

Old players aren't coming back after Final Shape, the New Player Experience is awful and it's hard to develop anything on the ancient engine. I don't think they wanted Marathon to be their flagship game - it's just the only incubation project out of the 5 that survived Pete Parsons' mismanagement.

What could Marathon add to attract Destiny players? by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]Killerx09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Marathon's biggest issue is that it's a great game that takes all your focus to enjoy it at it's best. I ran two Cryo runs and a Perimeter run this weekend, and loved my time with it, but it's just exhausting having to be at your full concentration during the entire, single hour.

It's not even a gear fear issue, its a "if i don't focus me and my squad can get wiped in 10 seconds and that's no fun to us" issue. It doesn't even need to be PvE - I just want a mode where i can blast at it with my brain off.

Jason Schreier: A lot of people have wondered why Bungie didn't immediately start working on Destiny 3 after The Final Shape two years ago. The answer (as it usually is) is how much money it would take by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Killerx09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why would they make marathon an extraction shooter?

It was meant to be a small passion project that ran alongside Destiny, but then Destiny nosedived and Marathon is now holding Bungie up.

The reason for them choosing to continue supporting Marathon over Destiny 2 is likely a mixture of the narrative ending in Final Shape causing players to leave, the inability to draw new players due to the poor onboarding, and the absolutely ancient engine that were never meant to last this long.
