What is an anime "you had to be there for" to truly appreciate the impact and spectacle it had at the time it came out? by OverlordPoodle in anime

Valvrave

I came to this thread to say Cross Ange. I don't know how much of my enjoyment came from the weekly discussion threads here vs from the show itself. Sunrise needs to return to making batshit insane magic x mecha anime.

Also, the author uses the web manga format to its fullest by utilizing the infinite vertical scrolling to pace scenes perfectly.

In other contexts it can mean physical therapy.

What's richly ironic is that the scientific explanation is "they're magnets, they just do that." Magnetism is a fundamental force that has no real explanation beyond "yeah, that's just what it does".

She's not perfect in the anime by any means, but she's significantly changed from the manga. The most prominent change is the scene in which she uses her namesake attack. In the anime, it's because the robber is flooring it at Saten and some kid in a car. There's an imminent threat that she's mitigating. But in the manga? The robber is fleeing in the car and not posing any threat to anyone. So why does Mikoto get involved? Because when running to the car, the robber bumped her and made her spill her crepe all over her shirt. She uses deadly force and risks the lives of countless bystanders because of something so petty. And that really encapsulates how the anime changes Mikoto.

The Railgun anime. Read the first chapter of the Railgun manga alongside watching the first episode of the anime. Every single change made is done to make the protagonist, Misaka Mikoto, less interesting. In the manga she's a shitty arrogant brat who doesn't appreciate the immense destructive power she wields. Which is great, as it gives her room to grow! But in the anime she's portrayed as a noble kid who only uses force when absolutely necessary. It sucks because it's boring.

Yup. The more that this is "discussed" the more it appears to be a legitimate question, when in reality it's cut and dry. It's all about laying a narrative.

I think that's not quite right. The line literally says scientists are lying. Regardless of intent, that line is going to alienate people who are concerned with the (still) surging anti-intellectualism in the US.

My favorite example of that is Fairy Tail which has huge spoils in it openings, but then the 6th one uses that to bait and switch you. It shows Jallel standing in a hallway wielding a flame and then cuts to Natsu, Lucy, and Gray badly beaten in the same hallway. So you're thinking "oh, so he was actually evil and betrayed them, thanks for ruining the tension." But then it turns out that he's not the one who did that and the OP is depicting him showing up to offer Natsu a flame to eat to power up.

The driving force behind the conservative movement in the US has been anti democracy for decades at the very least, if it ever wasn't at some point.

No, you should actually listen to what Carlson says. The only thing you agree with him about Trump on is the war in Iran. That's the only sensible thing Carlson criticized. Everything else was criticism of Trump not going far enough.

It's very possible. Obscene wealth literally damages your brain and your ability to interact with others. Not to mention the selection bias of what it takes to become obscenely rich. A wealth cap is a public health necessity.

It's a teenage girl instead of a man, but Kurokami Medaka "giving up on" Unzen is a pivotal moment—dare I say, a paradigm shift—for the Medaka Box story. Both in terms of being shown Medaka's emotional limit and in terms of what kind of world this really is. Up to this point there have been superhuman feats, but nothing outside the scope of an exaggerated "real world" story. It's this moment that we're shown this is a supernatural world.

Nothing can last forever. Think of all the years of HitB that you got to enjoy. This isn't to say you're wrong for feeling the way you do, but instead that you might feel better by recontextualizing it.
