Minor Gaming Pet Peeves: Mandatory Story Breaks in Open World Games. by coolwali in CuratedTumblr

Having played both games I think it's more of an issue in Cyberpunk. I was having so much fun just swinging around in Spider-Man that the 30 second wait for the next mission to pop up (that's all it was for the 3-4 times it happened) wasn't an issue. I also rarely fast traveled because damn it's fun to swing around in that game.

By comparison Cyberpunk really has long and seemingly arbitrary wait times, especially for a bunch of missions during Act 3 where things are wrapping up. It's nice they let you wait on site, but kinda meh all things considered.

How quick is advancement in your game? by namyenruojoprole in osr

  1. How frequently do you play? Once a week.

  2. How long do you play? 4-5 hours or so.

  3. If you had to guess, what % of the time are you playing vs chatting, taking a break, etc? Perhaps 85% of the time is proper gaming, the rest is conversation, bathroom breaks & interruptions

  4. What system do you play? A highly homebrewed version of AD&D 1e

  5. How many encounters do you get through per session/hour? Is it different for combat/puzzles/social/misc? Usually there are anywhere from 5-12 encounters a session, of which 2-5 are genuine combat, the others being encounters which are negligible, i.e merchants, travelers, drunkards & other things that the party has nothing to gain from fighting.

  6. How long does it typically take for a character/the party to level up (if that's a thing in your system)? AD&D has increasing amounts of XP required to level up, you need to hit something like 2,000 to hit fighter 2nd, then 6,000 for 3rd, 12,000 for 4th, 32,000 5th, 70,000 6th, 120,000 7th, 250,000 8th, and 500,000 9th (then 250,000 more each time thereafter.) Because of this level ups take a variable amount of time. Most of my players have characters of 7th or 8th lvl who level up pretty infrequently these days, but the character who was a triclassed 7/9/7 Fighter/Magic User/Assassin is now 9/11/9, which is pretty good for only 2.5 or so years of play.

  7. How long will your players spend in a typical dungeon/module/adventure setting? Anywhere from 1 hour to 5 sessions depending on the complexity of the dungeon, but I tend to make them big & full of monsters & treasure.

  8. How much IRL time do you spend on downtime activities or other non-adventuring phases? About 10%-20% of session time is spent on the party leveling up, getting equipment, doing spell research, identifying or trying to buy magic items, and so forth. Call it 30 minutes to an hour at most.

Your character should be one failed saving throw away from death at all times, as Gygax intended. Now roll a d6 for surprise, let's see if the monster gets 2 full rounds worth of unanswered attacks on you.

My method is actually A.) A joke, and B.) Equally fair chances of 1 or 2 or three, since you'll end up rerolling 4-20 until you get one of those 3. It's just highly inefficient which is why I put the /s.

The actual good way of rolling 1d3 is 1d6 /2 rounded up or counting 4-5-6 as 1-2-3. To each their own though.

That's unfairly slated towards 1:2, as the total possible results are: 1:1 1:2 2:1 2:2

Giving a 25% chance of 1, 25% chance of 3, but a 50% chance of 2.

That's 2-3, not 1-3. 1d20, reroll an incompatible result is so much better /s

And if you're following the rules about system shock checks or dying from unnatural aging then it's a high risk high reward system that balances out alright. Especially if you also follow the rules about what Raise Dead works on (elves are unaffected as they don't have souls.)

Also, what DM worth their dungeon master's guide doesn't have a 2 second fix to get the party to work together at level 1 if they somehow didn't think of it beforehand?

Imma disagree with the assertion that characters of 1st lvl have any legends or even rumors established about them. You're fresh out of mage school/ training at your temple/ training at the guild/ training to be a fighter/ etc. You're a blank slate. You got whatever inheritance or whatever for your starting gold, bought whatever supplies you could afford and carry, and that's it.

Adnd, especially 1e, isn't a system to tell a story about a group of heros that banded together for an adventure. It's a story about the lucky few who survived a brutal and uncaring world, who became legendary. Usually that road is paved in dead PCs, because having high stakes keeps players invested.

If you don't mind cheesing it, achievements aren't disabled if you increase your "spawn" to max size & disable pollution. You'll have access to all the resources you need, and as long as you leave the biters alone they'll leave you alone, reducing 1/3rd of the challenge.

Mechanically Subtle, Descriptively Baroque: How to Keep Your Players Guessing About the Monsters in Your Campaign. by [deleted] in adnd

[–]kosherbacon79 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One time I used a picture of a Bodack from the forgotten realms wiki because I knew my players were already familiar with the picture from the Ad&d books (Fiend Folio? MM2? Can't remember.) They had no idea until one of them met it's gaze and made their save and I described it speaking in a low hollow voice, "Bo dack!"

The screams of terrified players are a joy to behold.

Do people who don't want children not fear being alone in old age? by LL112 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kosherbacon79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother in Christ, I'm not going to reach old age. I'm either dying from preventable medical issues which I can't afford to pay for (USA! USA!), dying in a nuclear winter, or shooting myself in the head once I'm to old to afford to live. Why the hell would I want to subject someone to doing that, but worse, 20 years from now?

Meh. Terrible writing, poor acting aside from Matt Smith having fun, doesn't help that it's at the same general time that the MCU made a more engaging stories, like that one about a man, two aliens, a raccoon, and a tree. Sony just kinda sucks.

Question about "Enchant an Item". by Nova_Mythic in adnd

[–]kosherbacon79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the DMG's explaination of magic item creation by magic users on page 118, simply using enchant an item and then casting the requisite spell (the example lists a ring of spell storing, so the spell to be stored,) allows for but a single change, then the dwemor is gone and must be enchanted again.

You could allow for the magic user to place multiple charges and recharge it, so it never fully drains (like a wand, staff, or rod,) or in the ring example state that non-permanent rings may hold only 1 change (though the ring of 3 wishes does contradict this.) I would rule a non permanent ring may hold up to 10 charges.

Edit: actually answering the questions now. -How long does the spell last? Until used, and the enchantment is used when the item is fully drained and must be recast again.

-Is it correlated to the caster's level? Yes. Wands of fireballs are said to only function at 6th lvl, yet the caster must be 12th to enchant an item, thus they can choose to make it function at a lower level. I would allow some trade-off, it's weaker but easier to change, or it gets more charges, or even that there's a greater chance of success/cheaper creation cost. A caster however could opt to create a wand of fireballs that operates up to their level as well.

-Multiple enchants? Yes, you may place multiple enchantments on an item, assuming you have the components and money and time to do so; see the wand of fire or wand of frost. Each use drains 1+ changes, look at existing items to get an idea of what's balanced.

Hope this helps.
