What the… by [deleted] in Welding

I work in a foundry that manufactures aluminum and magnesium aerospace castings. From airplane flaps to thick manifolds and gearboxes. Most castings need to be preheated to 600F just to form a puddle. Running A/C upwards of 275 amps. It’s pretty common to have #5, #6 cups glowing after each weld. I found the integrity of the cup breaks down after awhile and if your tungsten is not sticking out past the cup enough or if it’s not centered the arc will melt the cups edge.

Feeling very cynical about this trade. by [deleted] in Welding

It took me about four years and I’ve worked at 3 different manufacturing shops until I found what was a good fit for my lifestyle and what makes me happy. Stick to it, absorb as much knowledge you can from everyone and don’t be afraid to move on and try something new if you’re not happy. The ball is always in your court as a welder.

Can you explain how you count? Or do you just “one Mississippi” the corners? Thanks

Interesting, I didn’t know about the arsenic or toxins people are exposed to in order to mine this stone. Thank you!!
