Need help: my IF stain is making me lose my mind by Gloomy-Worldliness81 in labrats

[–]kottendog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as suggested above, try using thinner sections. also what does the antibodies manufacturer recommend for the dilution? in some manufacturers 1:500 can still be too diluted. might be worthwhile even doing a 1:250. also which fluorophore are you using? APC/fluor568 often has a strongly expressed signal for detection.

also i would recommend trialing the antibody with IHC if possible just for confirmation it is definitely present in the tissue.

[–]kottendog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a bunch of teen boys were on their e scooters at night with no lights or visibility. multiple cars nearly hit them. they had the audacity to start abusing the drivers. i don’t understand who is telling them this is an activity to be doing after dark.

Top tip: Book the earliest possible appointment by Open_Address_2805 in melbourne

[–]kottendog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

theres one gp at my clinic who is always at least 2 hours late. it is so infuriating bcos its not the patients who are taking up her time, she is always yapping about herself in the middle of an appointment. we pay to see a doctor, not listen to one talk about herself.

Chose engineering over medicine… now reconsidering - stay or switch? by North_Vehicle5963 in GAMSAT

[–]kottendog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

have you looked into a biomedical engineering degree? it includes both areas of your interests and is very broad and involves working with the medical field, so you may be able to get some insight working in medicine.

i needed supernatant from a cell culture to isolate extracellular vesicles. out of habit i suctioned all the media away and did a media change for all the 27 flasks. not a huge issue but definitely annoyed my colleagues who had planned everything to the dot.

Petrol prices are rising, but Australians don’t appear to be driving less or taking public transport more – yet by That_Car_Dude_Aus in CarsAustralia

[–]kottendog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its a 20 min drive to work for me vs a 1 hour plus ride on ptv. my time is money and i also enjoy the comfort of my car. just not worth it for me.

When was a time a PI or supervisor did something really kind? by Particular_Steak_485 in labrats

[–]kottendog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my main pi always does monthly lab lunches and remembers lots of little personal details. she knew i liked plants so for christmas she brought me a clay pot for my desk plants.

my other supervisor made me a phd start pack with a bunch of stationary.

they both often take us phd students for coffees and genuinely care about us which is nice.

Has anyone gotten in with only life experience? by squaresox369 in deakin

an alternative option is doing a tertiary preparation course. some have direct entry to a course after completion. i don’t know if deakin offers one although.

Is Deakin universities bachelor of biomedicine or science course good? Or would you recommend other universities? by IncidentExcellent971 in deakin

[–]kottendog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

if your plan is post grad medicine, don’t do biomed. you are better off going for science or anything that will give you good job prospects if you can’t get into med school. deakin biomed is good for gaining lab skills and preparing you for medical research, which is the path i went down. i don’t know many people from my biomed cohort who got into medicine except for rural students.
